Most of the reviews are from the point of view of testers, so let me give my point of view as a client. The receptionist was warm, other staff members were nice and courteous, and Jeff, who ran the research was phenomenom. I provided Jeff with questions during the interview, and he asked the people. Then he followed my lead with more questions so the answers were clear. There was no mistakes in interpretation, Jeff got my points across, and the testers got to reveal their opinions at multiple opportunities, so there was no doubt. As a client, I get to sit in leather chair. The paid survey group sat in the same type of comfortable leather chair too. Everyone used the same bathroom, which was clean. That shows me fairness. P&K treats their customers and their paid testers the same, no double standards. I truly appreciate Jeff's professionalism, making a long, focus work day fun and fulfilling for me. read more

I used to Participate whenever called in the past until I found out what a sucker I was. Never ever made anymore than $30 tops on any research study I did, no matter what it was. I Participated for many, many years up until when I talked to all the black people claiming they made $200 on one trip. They always made more. So keep them as your clients. I was a PK tester for many, many years. Never late for a study, never canceled a study, never an issue. Recently my children have started testing as well. Over the years, I have referred many people who are current successful testers. Sometime in December 2024 it seems that I was "blocked" from any studies. Since then I have left many voice mails and emails periodically looking for someone to explain to me what has happened. No one is responding. I am being completely ignored. I see that some of these reviews are responded to. Here's to hoping someone sees this and responds. It's the least that can be done. read more

Have to update my rating. I'm not sure I'll go to this place again to participate in research studies. I was scheduled to pick up something up yesterday to test. The day before, I received an email reminder and he email made it sound like I would be expected to enter the building, since it talked about wearing a mask, not bringing guests, etc. I called the following day a few hours before I was supposed to pick it up to ask about the procedure, because I had been led to believe by the survey that it would be contactless curbside pickup. The woman I spoke to said it was indeed curbside and they'd put it in the back. I asked again, specifically asking her to confirm that I would be able to show my ID through my closed car window and they'd put it in the back of my car, and she said yes. I was surprised by a few things when I arrived. First, the woman who came to the window had her mask over her mouth, but not her nose. We're nine months into a pandemic... there's no excuse for her to not know the proper way to wear it at this point. Second, she said she needed my ID. I told her that the woman I spoke with said I could show it through the window, but she insisted she needed to take it inside. I told her if that was the case I wasn't going to be able to participate, and she said ok and walked away. I'm not all that broken up about not participating; there are other companies that do this sort of thing. I was just really annoyed that I specifically confirmed the parts of the procedure that mattered to me, spent the time to drive out there and then was encountered by an irresponsible employee. The overall low rating for P&K surprises me. I have had nothing but the best experiences with multiple members of their talented team. The woman in charge of the main desk is so sweet. I read a comment about the people who hand out samples being a bit gruff. That has never been my experience. I drove an hour in traffic because it was the only time I could make it after work. I have been late once before and I have called and they said they would still take me up to 15 minutes late. This time around I was 5 minutes late because traffic was bad and the woman at the front desk immediately said that they won't take me anymore and they're apparently already on their second sample. I've been inside before they have multiple rooms and seats. I drove a whole hour to get there. A solution would have been to put me in a different room. Obviously there wasn't many people for my time slot since they only started 5 minutes before I got there. Overall, I will not be coming in anymore. It wasn't worth how inconsiderate they were, or at least that woman, was to me. I think the worst part of it all was that she gave me attitude right when I walked in. This review is from an experience I had last night and I can't believe that it happened...still. First a little back story. I am a working professional, trying to pay back some grad school student loans and hear doing surveys was a great way to do so. So, I signed up and they called me to do a taste test for a new protein bar. I arrived early, but by the time they sent me to the right place, was about 5 minutes behind the others. While everyone was just clicking through and on a race, I took my time and for 5 samples, ended up taking about 20 minutes. Everyone else finished in about 10 minutes. After I had been there for about 13 minutes (checked my watch), they said quite rudely I needed to hurry up, so they could leave. Not only was I trying to take my time but also be thorough and honest. However I am blind in one eye and didn't want to rush and couldn't go much faster. I told the woman (whose name I will not say) I was visually impaired and would be done in 5-10 minutes. She sighed and said, please hurry up. I am not very happy and thought they would want people to take their time and be honest...obviously not. Not happy about this treatment and slight rudeness, but on the positive side, it was an easy $30. read more

P&K is a research company that does product testing. I've done quite a variety here from paper towels, to chips to vodka. The building and waiting area are very bare bones and there are often a ton of people there for varies studies. As others have said, they will call you A LOT - but that could be good if you are looking to make some dough or you can just use caller ID and not answer. I am a long participant of this company. I love to get paid for my honest reviews. My only problem is the creepy female employees who are sometimes very rude. I had quite a few being very negative. One lady got angry when I asked her a question. Some hate their job and take it out on you. Another time a woman was angry when I went to my stop sign on the computer. Even though you are suppose to. Then as I was leaving the place. I heard her call me some very derogatory words. So I complained about it. Most recently, about a month ago. A woman with huge behind!, was speaking in Spanish to a fellow tester that she knew, and then i sensed they were making fun of me in their language. Very unprofessional. I stood up for myself. But she denied it. So I was made to leave with pay. And explained it to the woman at the front desk. She gave me a number to contact management. But I could not reach or hear a response from them. When I arrived there I was told that the survey had been canceled. Instead of just giving me the product they tried to reschedule me for another day. This would have been my first survey with them. OK, maybe it's just me, or maybe it's because they are so close to my house, or maybe I just enjoy the sociology experiment that is a typical P&K group every time I am there, but I like being a part of it!! If you sign up, you will get called and asked a series of questions. Usually they are pretty benign, but I had a liquor tasting test last night (rock out Smirnoff!!) and they were a little more hard core about that. If you qualify, you will then make an appointment to come and told how much the test pays (some people have been paid over $100 for tests but the most I ever got was $60. This last liquor test paid $40). Once you walk into the building is when the magic begins. First up, this building is straight up out of 1983, back when grey and black decors with accents of mirror was all the rage. The people working here either hate life or they are terribly abused employees, because none of them ever smile and they all act like they are about 10 seconds away from getting the gun out. As you sit in the waiting room you get to observe people from all walks of life. People you would swear were homeless (but yet have a cell phone??), punk kids, middle aged soccer moms, guys in ties, you name it. Then your group is called and you are lead down this maze of hallways to a testing room. For as many times as I have been here and done tests, I swear I have never been in the same room twice. Most of the rooms are pure white and set up with small tables & chairs, classroom style. The folks running the test are very strict and bark out orders. At first I was a little irritated by this treatment, but once I saw how oblivious some of my fellow testees were (jumping ahead, not reading directions, sending texts, etc) I sort of get why they are like that now. Once the tests are done and it is OK to leave, you go back to the waiting room where the money is handed out and that's it! Pretty easy and painless. Plus I have tasted a lot of weird things in the past - cheese, gum, crackers...it can be very interesting! But to me the people watching is priceless and the main reason I go. I agree with most of the reviews here that the decor of this place is badly outdated, almost having an amusing effect on me. You know what, I really don't give a care. They pay me money for coming down and giving my opinions which turns out to easy cash in my pocket. i am not about to bitch about the decor. The staff was rather rude, but I really can't blame them at all. I do not condone the rudeness but I do understand it. They are under a time restraint and many of the people that were there with me had extreme difficulty following the simple instructions that they provided to us. The people in the front are RUDE & DISORGANIZED. Only good thing is the $25-$35 you get to survey. I've done 2 total, one for alcohol and one for food. My two fave things. They get the 3 stars for that. They get a negative 500 for the staff at the front. I will say the staff inside who actually run the tasting process are cool. Had fun in there. Well, in the end the truth prevails. Been going here for a few years and have no problems whatsoever, been nice to all of the 'so-called' customer service people who call - almost to a fault. It all started when I referred over 300 people, yes THREE HUNDRED PEOPLE when they had their referral program set up - they had the audacity to call me and tell me they didn't have the manpower to contact all of my friends ie referrals. That's when the red flag went up - they tell people they will pay them for their referrals and they use you to get new ones. Burn and churn. Their policies change by the seat of their pants - the people there, I feel sorry for as they need jobs and are trying to support themselves and their families - but when they take the job they realize what they got involved with. It's about survival of the fittest at this place! High employee turnover - red flag number two - these people try but I'm sure their employment practices need to be INVESTIGATED by the Illinois Attorney General of even the US Attorney General for unfair labor practices. That being said here's the ultimate - I've witnessed several times where some man would come out of nowhere and grab testers' slip of paper (your identifier) and verbally harrass a tester in front of a group of people! Then they throw you out after embarrassing you in front of a large group of people. It all came to a hault recently when we were all shuffled into a large room like cattle for the 1st test one morning (there was maybe 5 or 6 times offered and I took the 1st one). Was maybe the 10th or 11th person of 20 entering the room. The people in front of me were moving slow, like a traffic jam - so I moved over to accommodate the people behind me - ie being nice. Then one of the 'attitude' workers came into the room and screamed for me to move over and for the others to move down. Then the shit got real, another supervisor came in and started shuffling with the computers while I stood there like a horse ready for slaughter, and stood there and stood there. Then she motioned for me to sit down after fumbling with the computer - all while knowing that we were all on a closed circuit TV (CCTV) which I'm sure will be looked at by her superiors when the shit hits the fan; literally. So I proceeded to turn my chair 45 degrees while all three workers left the room. Why? They called us in 5 minutes late and knew they would be behind schedule for the rest of the day if they didn't move their asses and get the product samples out. Waited a few minutes and put my big boy pants on and walked out - yep - and I've done these tests for fun to try new foods that are on the up and up as I'm a foodie in the end! Took my own slip, walked out of the room and then handed it to the front receptionist (who I've had a great relationship with) who asked what happened and I simply stated twice 'they got me wrong,' and walked out. It's all on camera and this post will make their so-called 'agreement' non-enforceable! This company is a joke and all of their "clients" ie big corporations with tons of money to be thrown around for their market research need to be aware - they use the same people continuously to sample their products and push people in groups to simply fill their quotas to satisfy their clients' needs. It's all a numbers game - that simple. If you make one false move they chide you - but as I'm someone who always does the right thing - I took the high road out the door and will never enter their building again. I truly hope their so-called quality control manager calls to discuss as they simply don't care - ie I'd be surprised if they even bothered to call. If they do, I'l; be recording the call myself as it's a crime in motion. Client beware and testers, well if you really need the $$$ - totally understand! They also have people sign these so-called agreements everytime you do a test without letting you read what your signing! So let the video from my last visit prevail and we'll have the other 20 people in the room all be witnesses to what happened! Maybe we can enjoin in a class action lawsuit against them, investigate all their unfair labor practices and have the local and state food inspectors come and check out how they handle the food in the back before bringing it out to the the testers. They let water sit uncovered before serving it to you when you need a refill, they don't clean the stations between tests as the workers don't have the time (ie cracker crumbs and food crumbs found on tables and in computer keyboards and sometimes even on the floor!) and who knows how many Chicago river rats are pilfering through all of the leftovers in the garbage bins in the back.... read more

Get paid for doing taste tests! I've done tests for breakfast bars and frozen dinners, getting paid around ~$20-30 CASH for each half hour of time on average. These people will call you relentlessly. I received calls 3-4 times per week. I was out of the country for a month, so I accumulated quite a few voicemails from them. The only way they took a hiatus from calling me was when I missed one of my appointments with them. They stopped calling me for a month. Overall, it's a good way to earn money if you can qualify for their taste tests. They have really stringent quotas to fill. I've failed several times to qualify for their highly-coveted liquor tests. A conversation will go something like this: --- Do you drink vodka? Do you drink flavored vodka? How many times per month do you drink vodka? How many times per month do you drink flavored vodka? What types of flavored vodka have you tried? ...... Let me tell you that it is quite painful after going through 50 bazillion grueling questions to be turned down from a test. :( The facility has a decent-sized parking lot, but watch out for that horrible northside I-90 traffic. read more

I have been doing taste tests here since I was in high school. While the payouts aren't as great as some of the other research corporations in the area, $30 for less than an hour of my time at a place not too far from my house is something I will never turn down. Sometimes it's not so glamorous....like smelling for boar taint.....but it's a night out on the town compliments of P & K. A note to college students or people who travel a lot: If you know you will only be in town for a week or two, give them a call! They will try their best to get you in for a study during the allotted time. This generally worked for me when I came home for breaks during college and needed to fill my time and my wallet. read more

P and k has follows a few basic and simple guidelines. It is usually a very fast and pleasant experience coming here. You first go through a phone interview process to see if you qualify for a survey and when you do they schedule you to come in and take the survey. I have been going here since I was a kid. I think maybe since like 1984 or something! I like that they pay cash! Most places give out gift cards now. The fine woman at the front desk is great. Like Jelena, I had a very similar experience at one of P&K's focus groups. The front desk people were just really rude to me, and they fucking called me at like 7:50AM one morning to set up a focus group. Luckily, I qualified for it, but I was still pissed they called me so early. Long story short, it was one of the worst focus groups I've ever done, but the happy ending was that I got paid. They really made me work for the money, as I had to come back two days in a row to do a cigar taste test on those shitty convenience store cigars that are flavored with sweet fruits and clove.... it was just a really weird experience. The first day I got there, I brought a sandwich with me, and the woman (how lovely she is) at the front desk told me that I couldn't eat it in the lobby ( I have no idea why?) nor in the hallway. At this point I was really hungry after my 2 hour commute to get up there, and I was so fucking pissed. She eventually told me that I had to go eat it in the bathroom... and I was like "fuck that"...... Again, this is one of the more weird focus group companies that does not use e mail AT ALL, to communicate with you, and they refuse to even consider the option of doing anything on a computer. They are so old school Chicago, it's almost like you're walking into 1989 when you go to this place. To get to their extremely inconvenient location, I had to take a bus to a train to a bus, and then do it all over again on the way home. I had to do this a total of two days, which probably totaled 5-6 hours of commuting time. I can see why this neighborhood is so secluded from the rest of Chicago (the locals like it that way... ), but it is so obnoxiously difficult to get there, and I hate the Northwest Highway bus.... Keep in mind I had to go here during a work day in the afternoon... so when the group was all over I asked for travel reimbursement, and she was like "no, I"m sorry, it's included in your payment" WHAT A LOAD OF FUCKING BULLSHIT!!! The best part was the all white (sterile) rooms that we went to smoke the cigars in......like these rooms would help to keep the smoke away... there wasn't even a fan on in the room!! I think P&K employees a lot of the neighborhood locals, thus creating a lively and "chicagoesq" atomosphere, where outsiders like me are not welcome. In the end, I did get $100 to smoke cigars (to put it generally)... so that's why I'm not giving them a 1 star rating. In comparison to other focus groups in town, they are well below the standard, and I don't know if I would do another here.... but we'll see. read more

After the interview, they tell you the focus group is booked. They are using the personal information they get from you for their own use. This should be an illegal practice. Out of all the research companies out there, this has been my worst experience. I've spoken to several supervisors and the problem doesn't get fixed. If you don't qualify for a study, after answering questions for 10-15 minutes, you get repeat calls over and over for the same study. Not to mention that they are the LOWEST paying group I've experienced. Most studies are only $25.00. Other companies pay $75-200 for similar studies. If you have nothing else to do, I'd say go for it, once you actually qualify, the people there are very nice and they pay right after the study in cash. read more

In the interest of full disclosure, I haven't done a Peryam & Kroll taste-test in years. However, I SO agree about the lack of people skills of many of the staff there. But if you really need the money, why not? Furthermore, they seem to have a double standard when it comes to the time thing. Don't you DARE be late for one of their little taste-tests. However, they think nothing of making you wait, at times for half an hour or more, before they call you into the tasting room -- a sterile room, with tiny clostrophobia-inducing cubicles, with a chair, shelf-like table and a slot, with a sliding door through which they hand you the samples for you to taste and comment upon. Solitary confinement, anyone? ;-D Perhaps, the cold ambiance reflects the way they see their tasters? Another thing that bugged me, was when I was called to do a series of taste-tests for low and non-fat cream cheese, is that they gave us bits of UNTOASTED bagels with the cream cheese. How could we possibly know how their test-subject would taste like in the real world? Who in the world eats UNTOASTED bagels??? Suffice it to say, I would never buy low or non-fat cream cheese, after tasting all these pastey, gritty, gray-colored, edible food-like substances. Then there were the low-fat margarines! OMG! Some of them were slightly transleucent and wiggled just a little bit -- kinda-sorta like butter-flavored jello -- only this stuff didn't even melt when put on a piece of hot-from-the-microwave baked potato, whereas jello would have melted. To this day, I cannot eat margarine of any kind! Because of the time thing, I reccommend that you not book anything else for at least 2 hours after you THINK you'll be done at Peryam & Kroll, 'cuz they often run WAY behind schedule. Bring reading material in case they make you wait. And heaven help you if you say anything about P & K making you late for another appointment! read more
