A beautiful little park in the middle of central Philadelphia…read more The Saturday Farmers Market brought in tons of families, well dressed couples, and of course dogs! We had so much fun checking out all the stalls, soaking in the sunshine, and running around the inner sections with our kiddos. They had a little jazz trio playing in the middle of the square and they brought so much joy to our day. Even my two year old was dancing her socks off. I love little spots like this that bring the community out. Highly recommend for a stop if you're in Philly!

The best things in life are free and libraries are no exception for a free resource worth its weight in gold. Friendly staff. Library also serves as a health center. Many interesting events including a chess club as I am an avid chess player like Bobby Fischer and the Wu Tang Clan. The selection isn't that large compared to the main library in San Francisco that I frequent back home yet it is quality over quantity. Whoever orders the books here is doing an excellent job. Kudos to the librarians that order the excellent reads here. I had a casual game at the chess club and won. Better to quit while ahead so after I won a single match of chess I was ghost and went to the books here to pursue them for some time before getting on with it getting on with my day.

Benefitting from one of the largest Friends of the Library chapters and a community that reads and has a strong sense of what their library should be like, the Falls branch offers a collection of materials both broad and deep. Your chances of finding that obscure title in poetry, literary criticism, cookery, or history will be quite good, as will your chances of finding the latest by Koontz. There is a fine and comprehensive children's collection, as well. Programs and activities offer a range from monthly todder story times in the artistically rendered Story Time Room, programs for all ages of children, an after school program, 4 book clubs, travel lectures, author talks, an annual Bastille Day soiree, Christmas Tree sale, and one of the largest used book sales in the City (proceeds benefit the branch library). The staff is prompt, persistent, personable, and knowledgeable. As one of the busiest branches in the Free Library of Philadelphia system, they work hard to strike that rare balance of keeping up with the demand while staying attentive to each and every patron. Pleasantly, they succeed most every time. Finally, the building itself will attract your eye, set amongst a small, award winning garden yard and tall evergreen trees on the corner of Midvale Avenue and Warden Drive. You'll look up to a vaulted high ceiling, white plaster with dark wood beams arched across the whole length; peaked, high-set windows; architectural woodwork throughout the interior; all set within a stone structure in the English Collegiate Style complete with a small steeple including a weather vane that has an intersting story of its own. Make no mistake, the structure was built in 1913 specifically to be the library for the East Falls community and has filled that role with pride and prestige ever since.

This eagle was created in Germany by sculptor August Gaul. It made its debut at the 1904 St Louis World's fair. John Wanamaker purchased this sculpture for display in his landmark store atrium which is called Wanamaker's but is the present day Macy's. The floor below was reinforced by extra girders to accomodate its 2500 weight. All 5000 feathers including the 1600 on the eagle's head were wrought by hand. The eagle is made out of Durana bronze to give it the golden hue. The eagle sits in the center court of the majestic atrium in the heart of Macy's. Above it you can see the famous Wanamaker organ-reviewed separately. The exhibit is free and open to the public during Macy's store hours. Still a good place to meet up with someone since it is not overly far from Reading Terminal Market.

The second floor is more for group study. There are computer that you can use, and there are also copy machines and printers. There are study rooms which you can reserve which has a huge 42 inch monitor that can accommodate 6-8 people. There is also a nice fish tank on the second floor. It's a great library. The staff is friendly. Good place to study. Love this place!

One of my favorite buildings and institutions! My friend and I did the free tour of the rare book…read moredepartment. It is located on the third floor tours are given on Mondays at 11 a.m. There may be other dates as well. You do not need to register you can just show up. Our Tour Guide was very knowledgeable about the collection. The display and exhibits change every couple months so there's always something new to see. The free library has one of the largest Beatrix Potter collections outside of the UK. It also has an Edgar Allen Poe and Charles Dickens items, illustrations and paintings. Grip, Dickens, pet crow, is on display. After the bird died, Dickens had it preserved. You can get a grip sticker for free! The end of the tour takes you into a library that was moved from the Elkins mansion and reassemble at the library. It has the original furniture which you can actually sit in. As well as books, maps and decorative pieces. It was amazing to see. This is definitely a hidden gem.
