This is a delicious Venezuelan restaurant. I just moved from Brooklyn and these are the best empanadas and arepas that I have had since living in the city. Pabellon doesn't look like much from the road but it the best Mexican/Venezuelan restaurants in the area. We always get the tacos and they are so authentic and tasty. The are also very large and I can barely get through one so I always have leftovers! We plan to branch out and try the Venezuelan food soon. Pabellon has taken over the space formerly known as Bea Taco town. Online ordering is available through Grubhub. During my visit I was shown both the Mexican menu and the Venezuelan menu. The Mexican menu has more to offer but I wanted to try Venezuelan. The Venezuelan menu had no prices affixed to it so I asked the man at the register and was given the prices. Prices seem very reasonable so I ordered a reina pepiada arepa which consists of chicken breast with various seasonings and an avocado sauce. As a side I ordered the plantains covered in white cheese. Since I was eating in I was directed to the dining area. The seating area is vast and there is one wall still being redone. They also play music of the country. I did glance at both menus and saw that they had vegetarian options available as well. I was served my food in a reasonable amount of time. The plantains were spot on good for only $5.00! My arepa came with the Venezuelan flag toothpick on it making it quite cute. The chicken in the arepa seemed cold so I went to inquire about it. I was told that they consider this type of arepa like a salad even though the arepa was warm. I explained to him that this should be noted on the menu since there is also another arepa also served with the interior cold. It was good but reminded me of chicken salad since the chicken was cold. I decided upon dessert and found out that the only offerings they had for dessert were three milks cake or chorros. I opted for the former and believe me it was rich and so fresh! As I was going to pay I saw a sign in the back that said "Welcome new concept, coming soon." i inquired about that sign and learned that the business plans to get a coffee bar set up at the ordering counter and eventually serve breakfast. For now they only have one gender neutral restroom-(no place for purses ladies), which is always my pet peeve. The counter man explained to me they are actually working on getting another one per inspector guidelines which is currently in the works. They have no WiFi and cellular reception is pretty bad. I paid for my lunch and offered suggestions for improvement. Learning they have only one Venezuelan menu which is shared it should have the prices on it and have more of them. Likewise items that are cold should be marked as such. When in doubt I suggest ask before ordering. It was a descent lunch and next visit will try out their Mexican selections. Located on Banksville Road headed towards town they have their own private lot. If coming from the opposite direction then I would suggest to drive to Kuhn's market and plaza, make a left into it and then pull straight out at the far end and you will be in the right direction. read more

This restaurant is a gem! Ive had Venezuelan food before and this place serves delicious food! I love the texture and crispiness of the empanadas. They are made from cornmeal dough, really good size (about the size of a desert plate). My son and his girlfriend ordered the domino, the pabellon, and the seafood empanada--all were very flavorful! I ordered the chicken arepas, the bread is crispy on the outside and soft inside. It was packed with the grilled chicken. The plantains were served with cheese on top, which gave a great flavor combined with the caramelized, crispy plantains. The restaurant is clean, roomy, and well lit (when you're of a certain age, you appreciate a well lit area). The server was so sweet and very attentive. I highly recommend this restaurant! read more

We have been going to this restaurant for the last year and a half since the change ownership and I must say, it's one of my favorite places to get authentic Mexican food in the area. I ordered the super burrito, which was huge and cooked to perfection, my fiancé ordered a Pabellon arepa, which he absolutely loved, and my step-son ordered the Cachapa which he said was amazing. The waitress was very sweet and Accommodating. She made sure to ask if there was anything wrong with our food because I didn't eat all of my burrito, It was just too large for me to finish. I went in here and the service was a little slow. When I finally got the menu, it was the Mexican menu. I came in to try their Venezuelan food. Unfortunately, the only items that I was able to order were the arepas. I was i formed that if i wanted empanadas i would have to wait longer. I decided to get the Pabellon arepa. When I received it, the beans were spilling out of the arepa and the cornmeal which could've been a little more crispy, was soggy. The flavors were present and the arepa was generously filled. I've now tried at least 6 menu items from both the Mexican and the Venezuelan options. Unreal! Just wonderful. I honestly don't understand all the rave reviews; the food was bland and just "eh" and the atmosphere is not good. I walked in realizing this looked like a makeshift restaurant but was hoping the food would be worth it. Not a knock, but FYI they do not serve alcohol (no margs with mexican!) And pay at counter when you leave, its not a full service restaurant. Friendly service. To start, chips & salsa are 7$ thats a little outrageous for a dive. The pop was so flat that I bought a bottle from the cooler but it was barely chilled so I put over ice, that was very old tasting, gross. I ordered a small side of plantains because I've always wanted to try..7$, again a bit steep. Sour cream is 2$. I had an empanada, the corn dough was fried crisp and golden but no taste (maybe that's normal for this dish?) And all filled with just meat, bland boiled to oblivion meat. Decided to stop into this restaurant for the first time today. Just found out it has been here for a few years, so it was about time I stopped in. I ordered the Mole Enchiladas which were so delicious. I could taste the chocolate in every bite! The black beans were tasty, while the rice was actually cooked just right. The atmosphere and customer service was fantastic, as well! If you are a fan of authentic Mexican food, you owe it to yourself to stop in. I'll have to try the Venezuelan food some day. read more

Prior to trying Pabellon, I'd never had Venezuelan food before. Now, I can't get enough! I've had both take-out and dine-in experiences at Pabellon and both are great, although I do slightly prefer enjoying the food fresh in the restaurant. My husband and I always get the same things, because what we get is so good, it's hard to venture out and try something different! We always get at least one empanada (chicken is my favorite), I get the Pabellon arepa and he gets the chimichanga. He's had chimichangas at many other restaurants but claims Pabellon has the absolute best in Pittsburgh. I love coming here because the food is always consistently good and service is good as well. I know restaurants in this location have come and go, but I really hope Pabellon is here to stay! read more

It's quite a drive to get out to this restaurant, But if you're looking for authentic Venezuelan and Mexican food in the city, this is the place to go. Overall, it is a large restaurant. There is not much decor or atmosphere. The server was very kind and explained a lot of the menu to us. They speak English in Spanish at this establishment. They have a wide variety of food options including most of the traditional Venezuelan dishes and many authentic Mexican options. They even have a fusion of some of the two, which is amazing. I had an arepa Which was very flavorful. The bread was fresh, ingredients inside fresh and cooked well. It had a lot of flavor. Tres leches was amazing. If you follow their Instagram page, they post unique meals that they come up with for a limited time. They had Nutella tequeños at one point, which looked amazing. Diamond in the rough. Not that I don't love Banksville- but it's hard to stop and smell the roses on Banksville Road. Traffic moves quickly- unless it's rush hour of course. And if you're in the slow moving outbound traffic (during lunch and dinner hours)- you're on the opposite side of the divided road. It can be a little hard to spot- and hard to get to from the opposite side. Strike while the iron is hot, I always say. Next time you think about driving by- don't. While Pittsburgh is growing and diversifying- we definitely don't (yet) have a strong foothold in more traditional Latin American flavors. It's okay not to be familiar- but not okay to miss out altogether. Ask questions about the menu! The staff are all very friendly and courteous. They work hard and that energy is evident, beyond the flavors themselves. The flavors are fantastic and you can get into something that suits every taste- light flavors, bold flavors, all of it. I love the arepas- they always hit the spot and I don't feel like I need to take a nap afterwards from eating too much. If you have your reservations about something totally new, go for one of the more Americanized ones like a Philly cheesesteak arepa. Im also nuts about tostones (part Puerto Rican on my Mom's side) so it's cool to see and taste something so familiar with subtle differences that are delicious.
