Humbly, math is a process that takes time, discipline and good old "show your work" pencil and paper. That's something that is taught here. My kids learned to sit and focus. It isn't a place where there is unorthodox learning. Bring your kids here to learn, be patient, and methodical. They will take skills with them to confidently and independently use for their future.

Not only are my kids are strong with math, the one thing about Kumon is extremely helpful that people don't understand is that my kids have developed a very strong attention span towards working on a task. This will Ultimate help them with not shying away from what's in front of them one day in life ( I am a strong pbeliever in it). Another huge benefit of Kumon is repetitiveness. Students are required to do worksheets everyday and this triggers them at a young age to learn and adapt doing certain daily task per day and skipping it is no option. My wife and I literally go crazy make them do Kumon everyday - but we know it is all worth it. So how Christine will help: If you have been doing it for 30 years, you have seen enough kids that gone through there. The experience will her and her staffs will definitely help our kids to better themselves as they r giving more kids to work with and larger sample size to help. Lastly I believe her sons help with the business which is nice to hear this place as a family establishment. Bring your kids in and let them develop this skills asap

Kids are under so much pressure these days compared to when I was in school. Granted that was a…read morelong time ago but it is true. My daughter is in the sixth grade and pretty much a straight A student, except for math. She began slipping behind this past semester and was getting a C in math. This stressed her out far more than me however I convinced her and myself that we could tackle this together. That was until I learned the hard way that this common core BS it literally the most confusing math I have ever encountered. We gave it a week of me trying to teach myself and then her. And then another week of me getting absolutely frustrated. And then by the end of the second week I threw in the towel and started searching for tutors. Initially I was set on getting her a private tutor like I had done for my son 8 years prior. To my surprise and horror? Private tutors were running upward of $140 for an hour of in home tutoring. Ok. They make more than I do. I then decided that was insane and I switched gears settling on Sylvan at West Portal. The start up was pain free, she had her assessment and then headed full steam ahead with the small group math tutoring 2 days per week. There was only 2 months of school left, she had a C- in math going into it and finished the semester with a solid B. The best part of all was the confidence boost she got along with that B. The staff at Sylvan were friendly, easy to communicate with and never tried to push packages on us that we didn't need. Her assessment was so helpful in that it picked up area's where she needed help that she didn't know she even needed help in. The prices were very competitive and although I was hoping to get her the 1:1 tutoring I was limited by the cost and reassured that she would likely do just as well with the small groups. They were correct. There was not a single tutor that Lily did not click with. They were all patient and kind providing updates along the way with her progress. It was all around a great experience and she will definitely return for the math homework group in the Fall. I would recommend Sylvan to anyone who's child is falling behind in a subject and needs a boost. The money spent was well worth it and my girl went into the summer feeling great about herself and her grades.

The impact Scott had on my son went well beyond college essay preparation/production. Pre-Scott, my son could barely write a coherent sentence and through the magic of Scott's teaching methodology and in a relatively short timeframe, the improvement was dramatic. The counsel, candid discussions, and direction Scott provided paid huge dividends in the classroom and in daily written communication (emails, texts). My son became a more confident writer and student which of course, carried over to everyday life. As he heads-off to college in the fall (UCLA), I'm forever grateful to Scott for the life-changing role he played in preparing my son for the next chapter and beyond.

My daughter really struggles with deadlines and time management and Scott was really patient and gave a lot of good advice and guidance. In the end she was admitted to her top choice. I love that the…read morecenter director has a systematic way planned out to focus on different writing types, one at a time, then to debate, then to publish their own story, then to college essay writing. They do group different grades of students together in a class, but it doesn't matter because students are of the same level. When my two daughters started, there were older kids in their classes but they didn't need to catch up ever. My younger daughter is now in 10th grade and she just finished the presidential debate project recently. My older one is now a college freshman in a university across the nation. She's a Posse Scholar with full tuition covered for all 4 years. She's also accepted to the UCs she applied including UCLA, UCB, UCSD, UCI. Writing has never been a struggle for her and I'd give credit to UpGrade for giving her a strong foundation!

I really wanted to like this learning center. The staffs/tutors there are very respectful, helpful,…read moreand friendly to the small children. They are mostly high school students. My kid really liked Shu Lin, but as a parent and our need for learning center is education. Reading & Math Subjects: are from an App that has reward points and your child can use that points to play game. You can purchase it at home. Most parents want the Writing subject, but they NEED to sign up for Reading & Math in order to sign up the Writing. For my 3rd grader, I felt this is fine because he has much to learn. It should be an option for student with strong Reading and Math skill. Writing class: 2hrs long with a small break. She's teaching grammars, definitions, descriptive words, sentence structures, and above all those, taking note (I really love this about the class). My biggest drawback: She has too many students in one class, all from different grade levels. 5th graders+ have much faster to learn concepts and this unfair to them or maybe unfair to 3rd graders. My 2nd biggest drawback: there is no feedbacks for their writing assignments. Feedback is most important for kids to learn. Overall I feel that she just jams all students in one writing to collect money. She obviously can divide the class base on their grade/age level throughout the week. I really hope Shu Lin can improve on these: feedbacks, class base on their grade/age, and give option to students base on their assessment test (also because she's teaching grammar in her writing class). As a parent, what degree you hold doesn't matter as long as you can teach with humble and kindness.
