This is a review for Pace's mandarin immersion summer camp that my child attended for 3 weeks…read moreduring the summer of 2017. It was probably a bit much for any child to sit in a much smaller-than-expected classroom for a whole day for 3 weeks, but the educational themes sounded promising so we did it anyway. Unfortunately a few days into camp she came home telling us that there was a group of kids and their teacher who speak english in the same room including one child who would have fits and shout "bad words" all the time. When I brought this up to Jason, he told us that they take kids with special needs in additional to trying to run a mandarin immersion camp. While I think it's great that they were willing to take children with special needs, it's not particularly effective to put those 2 groups each with very distinct needs into a small, one-room space (the room looked to be about 450 sq ft max). Moreover, I was particularly frustrated when no action was taken to stop the obscenities (my child probably learned as much obscenities in english as she did chinese in those weeks). Each time Jason was informed that yet again, today was another day with foul language disrupting camp, his only response would be "I apologize for the foul language and have spoken with the teachers and parents about it. If the foul language does not stop, the camp will have to take appropriate needed steps as it violates our camp's code of conduct. We appreciate your patience and understanding as our camp tries to be inclusive." Perhaps we were too patient and understanding, as apparently no action was ever taken since the behavior continued throughout. This place was truly regrettable and I wish we could have taken our child out after that first week and spared her the obnoxious behavior she and the others were subjected to.

Both of our children have advanced well beyond their school grade levels, and we truly credit Kumon more than their regular classes for that growth. The owner and instructor, Ms. Tian, is excellent to work with. She has always been flexible and understanding when our schedule changes because of sports or other activities. Her support and communication make a huge difference. The cost is absolutely worth it for the academic progress and confidence our kids have gained. We've recommended this center to other families and will continue to do so.

My child was having issues with his instructor and we had requested to switch our child to another instructor because they clashed the whole time. Unfortunately, instead of helping my child find an instructor who can work better with, the manager argued that the instructor assigned to our child was the best they've got(we found out later on that the instructor my child had was also the owner, so go figure). Our child used to enjoy Kumon and started dreading it when new management took over. To make a long story short, we pulled out our child from this Kumon Center and found a much better one that we are truly happy with. Also, I would also like to point out that most of the good reviews from this Center were made years ago already so don't be deceived. This Kumon place is now under new owners and they are not easy to work with. Our experience with them was terrible! I felt compelled to write this because I've come across a few parents who took their kids here but left as well-- Just don't waste your time and go somewhere else!

I think Ms. Keli puts together a great program with community based programming and does such thoughtful things for holidays and celebration. She's extremely responsive and caring. We're deeply grateful for how the school has supported, nurtured, and challenged each of them. The head of school is outstanding, and the teachers and staff are exceptional. We came for the academics and stayed for the school's commitment to developing thoughtful, self-aware, and engaged citizens. The curriculum is well balanced, with strong emphasis not only on STEM, but also on humanities, arts, music, ethics, and global citizenship. Summary: Provides a solid base but the administration is questionable…read more I took 9 classes at this school about 12 years ago, starting from beginning 1 through Intermediate 6. The teachers were hit and miss in my experience. Some teachers really cared and gave a good effort to teach while others just went through the motions. As other reviews have said, you have to want to learn and have to put some effort in on your own time to really learn. I went to Japan for the first time after my last class at the school and I was surprised that I was able to get by with what I learned. Obviously I couldn't have real conversations but I could do the basics like order food, understand numbers/money, ride a taxi, etc. In the years since I've studied on my own off and on to try to keep up with it as much as I could. I recently started using Duolingo and I noticed that I keep going back to the basics that I learned at Soko Gakuen. The only real negative I have is with the school's administration and principal/director. Simply put, the guy is a bully and a jerk. He's really rude when you want to ask him even a basic question and makes you feel like you're not welcome at "his" school. He treats the teachers even worse. I still shake my head when I think about that guy all these years later. Also, the ultra inexpensive tuition that the school brags about translates to less than minimum wage for the teachers which I think might be illegal and is definitely exploitative. I kind of feel ashamed that I didn't realize this when I was going there.

Previously when working with her, I learned enough to travel on my own in Beijing and surroundings.
