Here are the facts to my experience: - They left the main cover off the engine so I had to go back and get it. They lost the special screws for it and had to order more. - They replaced my front speed sensors on each wheel but didn't bolt the actuals sensors in (neither side). A week later the ABS and Traction lights came back on. That's what happens when speed sensors flop around. - Before I found unbolted new sensors issue my wife took the car back and they said the ABS+Traction light was not a speed sensor issue but was due to needing a catalytic converter ($2500 - which Dixie Muffler fixes for $500) or starter coil issue ($600) - not a speed sensor issue. - They also said they they pulled codes that were different than what I had pulled that morning - very strange. - I didn't trust them so I picked up the car and it 'limped' without power. On the side of the road I looked under the hood and saw no issue. Got to the muffler place, had a new cat converter put in, still the car still limped. I looked under the hood and saw that the connector to the starter coil looked plugged in but was not. I sqeezed the connection and it slid 1 mm and snapped closed making the connection. The car drove fine. Why were they even messing with that part of the car. What was their intent? Was I set up for a scam? You bet. Did all their detailed explainations make sense? They sounded smart and confident, but they contradicted my findings and 1000's of hours of working on cars and 'invented' an issue that would have been hard to see through if I didn't have engine experience. Did I spend lots of time and money? Yes - and most was created by them.

In any case, online car repair forums I perused warned me that it could cost me in the $1,200-$1,500 range -- yowza! I briefly researched doing the repair myself, but quickly decided that it would be a terrible idea. (Aside: it was not recommended to be a DIY repair by any of the car forums I visited). So, after researching what the repair should cost on websites like NAPA auto care, consumer reports, and Auto MD, I set out to find an affordable mechanic here in town. Among the 6 I called, Harrods Creek Auto Service Center quoted me the best price. Repairs are done by appointment only, but I was able to get a spot the next day to bring my car in. It was an extensive repair, and took until the following day to be completed. When it was done, I was bracing for it to be more than the quote, and was so excited when it wasn't! Bonus points for accurate price quoting :-) My car's problem is fixed and I'm so happy that it was able to be done for a fraction of what other shops would have charged me. The gentleman from Autozone tested the battery and said it was good, but the problem was the alternator. At that moment, Desmond Yeary of Yeary Automotive, who was helping one of his customers in the parking lot with his 12-year-old son, overheard our conversation. He handed me his card and said he could come by my house at 3:00 and install the part for me. I went back into the store, and the guys at the desk said he was a regular customer and even recommended him. Normally, I am skeptical, but his young son, who was part of the operation, sold me. Desmond and his son showed up on time and fixed my problem. The price was very reasonable, and I enjoyed seeing the relationship between him and his son. Clearly, the son was learning the trade with his dad--very cool. The next day, my car wouldn't start, and I had to jump it to get back on the road. I went back to Autozone, and they tested the battery and alternator again, saying both were good. I called Desmond, and he came over that afternoon. He and his son worked on the car for almost two hours. Desmond pulled out special meters and analytic tools and finally found that the battery had a dead cell, which evaded detection by the Autozone folks. Desmond then pulled out the battery, took it back to Autozone where it was replaced for free under the warranty, reinstalled the battery, and charged me nothing. Let's be clear: the battery was not Desmond's problem, yet he didn't charge me for all that work. There are a lot of busy (and older) folks out there, and a mobile mechanic makes a lot of sense. I am a fan, especially of this guy. As a former police officer and present security consultant, a healthy skepticism is a good thing. There are several things you can do to ensure the mechanic you hire isn't going to rip you off... but I did none of these things because I think I am a good judge of character. You can trust Desmond Yeary, and I recommend him highly.
