Additionally, the people are some of the most kind, interesting, and genuine people I know. We have had a very easy time connecting with people through Life Groups, the mom's group, and volunteer opportunities. Many of our closest friends have come from this community. We really like all the pastors. Their sermons are smart, thoughtful, and Christ-centered. Our children really enjoy the children's ministry and their friends there. The volunteers are passionate about loving them well and sharing the joy that comes from following Jesus. I look forward to them growing and being part of the vibrant middle school and high school ministries.

An update on my previous review as I should have included more detail. Our personal experience as a…read morefamily at Grace happened during our first attendance with our young child attending the children's ministry. We encountered what we felt was inappropriate behavior of a sexual nature from another child in the children's ministry. I brought this specific issue to the attention of the church leadership. My email was cc'd and forwarded around but i only received a very generic and corporate-type, canned response from the children's ministry staff with zero resolution to the concern. While they acknowledged the matter and spoke about it via email, the issue remains unresolved from my perspective. I did not receive adequate reassurance that the situation would be handled with the necessary level of accountability or that steps were being taken to ensure it wouldn't happen again. In fact, I was even accused of demanding personal and confidential information from the other family when all I asked for was that they are taking precautions for it to not happen again. I was not at all asking for personal information whatsoever. I felt ignored and accused. As a member of this community, I felt it was important to share that I did not feel supported or heard when addressing a serious safety and boundary concern. I would advise others to be aware of how leadership handles these types of internal grievances.

This is a smaller church and they will notice you! And I mean that in the best way. When I was looking for a church one of the things I did is I looked at their website and there's a YouTube of Pastor Nick talking about the church and there's testimonies of some of the disciples of the church and that's what really sold me. While one of the pastors there did say they appreciated my ministry during a zoom bible study there was no reliable show of such support and I actually never learned why. That pastor did have our mental health outreach flyer translated to Spanish but yet never shared the outreach or the flyer with the congregation and or offer to support by attending, assisting with volunteers, etc. I am grateful for the translation. The congregation here is largely Hispanic and most of the pastors are young. I'm however African American and over 60; not sure if that matters but this was my experience. I've been to a few of the Calvary Chapel churches just to see if I could detect any fundamental…read moredifferences between them. Every one I've been to (except for one) adheres to the expositional method of Bible teaching, meaning the Bible is taught verse by verse. Calvary Chapel Long Beach is no exception. This particular Calvary Chapel does not have its own facility, so they meet for worship in the main auditorium of Marshall Academy of the Arts. The senior pastor is Roger Cochran, who teaches the Word of God verse by verse. I've been to the midweek Bible studies and on one night, Pastor Roger was out of town, so his son Andrew filled in, and he did a really great job. Andrew had a lot of enthusiasm for teaching the Word, which was quite refreshing and encouraging to see. The Sunday service meets at 9:30 a.m. The midweek study meets every Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. There is also a men's ministry, women's ministry, teen ministry and children's ministry. Additionally, there is a college group and a group for married couples. This is a solid, Bible-teaching church worth checking out. The people who attend are friendly and welcoming, too.

The reason i took a break from church is because I was looking for one that felt like 'home'. I attended a Baptist church in Lakewood for a couple of years... but I never felt like I was welcomed....the church had cliques and the people felt 'fake'.... I did not feel love there. You had to be a certain type of person...a certain look. Buuuut as soon as I walked thru the doors of Christ Chapel I was welcomed with a hug and smiles. It's a small church with a huge heart. EVERYONE is welcomed here. You see all sorts of people...young, old, gay, straight, singles, couples, rich, poor, well dressed and casually dressed.... It does not matter who or what you are. The love and word of God is here. There's lots of singing here...don't worry if you can't carry a note/tune because the music/singing is loud so don't be shy... Sing along! The sermons don't feel 'preach - y'...if you know what I mean. It feels more like 'sharing'...communicating. Not sure how to describe it, but I guess it's like friends talking about Jesus /God /the word. My husband was raised in a very catholic family, he's only attended catholic services...but he's joined me a few times here and he's really enjoyed it. Which says a lot about this place. You leave here feeling light, loved, stronger and safe. I encourage anyone that feels the need to get closer /understand the Lord to come visit.
