Unfortunately, there is a large homeless population spread across the lawn as one user said & it's a major turn off. Fortunately, they are mostly outside and the ones that do come into the library are civil albeit a little smelly. As an extra preventive measure, they do have security guards by the doors and walking along the premises. Another nice thing about this library is their seed programs! You can borrow seeds and even take a plant cutting home. I also like that they have ukelele classes on Thursdays. Parking: plenty of parking even on a weekend Perks: they have plenty of events to keep children & adults engaged and involved in the community

I have a…read morepersonal connection to MCRD San Diego because I recently had two family members go through boot camp. I come from a military family and have always had a deep appreciation for our military. It is such an honor and special moment to attend graduation here after not seeing or talking to your loved one for three months. Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego was built in 1919 and is located right next to San Diego International Airport (the other recruiting base is in Parris Island, South Carolina). MCRD is also home to a Drill Instructor's School and at times will house members of the U.S. Coast Guard. Thousands of Marine recruits are trained here each year. Those that enlist go through a thirteen-week training process in which the recruits are cut off from civilian world and must adapt to Marine Corps lifestyle. Towards the end of the training period, recruits are taken offsite for field training and must pass the 54-hour simulated combat exercise called the Crucible. After passing, they are officially Marines and can attend graduation. Even though it can be hard for a parent to let go of their child, they do some things for the parents to help with the detachment process. The recruits are not allowed to have cellphones or make contact with family, but they can write and receive letters. During boot camp, I always kept the training matrix hanging on my wall so that I would know what training exercise they were doing each week. They also have a Facebook group page where they will post photos of each company's training exercises. Graduation day is a special weekend when parents can have dinner at the Bay View Restaurant and meet their child's drill instructor. Then families are able to watch their new Marine march on the parade deck and see them for the first time. There is also a museum here at MCRD San Diego that focuses on the history of the Marine Corps. I enjoyed walking through it and checking out all of the different galleries and exhibits.

The moment I stepped in, I was greeted by dirt and sticky surfaces that made it clear cleanliness was not a priority. Everything in the room looked like it was trapped in 1985: a tiny, outdated TV, worn-out furniture, dingy carpets, and clocks that belong in a thrift store. There were exactly two USB ports in the room, and unsurprisingly, neither of them worked. If you're expecting modern amenities, you'll be sorely disappointed. Housekeeping? More like no-keeping. The civilian cleaning staff barely did anything. The shower was a disaster--the head was sticky, and there were long black hairs stuck to the ceiling and tiles, a surefire sign of carelessness. The toilet seal was leaking, adding to the room's overall neglected condition. The courtyards added to the experience, and not in a good way. You see, Marines frequent the area, and let's just say they don't keep it quiet. My nights were filled with the sounds of Marines doing Marine things--talking, singing, taking loud bathroom trips, and other shenanigans that echoed through the night. The thin walls made it impossible to escape the noise. If you want rest, peace, or even basic comfort, go somewhere else. This place doesn't provide it, and the experience left me frustrated and sleep-deprived. There are far better places to spend your money and actually feel like you're getting what you pay for.

Don't get yourself in a tither. There's no walk-ins. I arrived at 11 am on a Tuesday. There were four people ahead of me. I met with the agent at 11:20 a.m. My situation required a lot of education and I have to return. I am thankful window 16 was patient in explanation. I'm sure I'll have to come here a few more times but I did appreciate the efficiency: 1. I work in Chula Vista. I took the trolley and walked three blocks. I have no time to fiddle faddle with parking. But I can assure you parking is limited. 2. It takes 10-15 minutes to complete the online application from scratch to scheduling an appointment. You need an email. Remember your password. I scheduled my appointment in the moment and received several email reminders. 3. When you arrive to the address, you will see the immigration sign before you see the social security sign. Check in at the kiosk for a paper ticket or check in with a QR code for a digital ticket. 4. Wait for your number to be called. There is a visual board and there is also a loudspeaker announcement. Your appointment time means a range between your time and after. For example, a person may make an appointment for a replacement card. But then they talk to the agent about 20 other items. This makes that 15 minute appointment, forty minutes. Therefore your appointment time gets delayed. SSA attempts to schedule your appointment based on the request of the application. But we all know social security. We have 50-11 questions once we are actually there. There is a lot of space for mobility accessibility. Plan your time well. Bring water. Bring a book. Bring headphones. And if your benefits were stopped, it will suck but only for a period of time. Ask them exactly what you need to do to expedite your resources. "Be polite to our civil servants."

I just found it extremely frustrating to walk into an empty office and I was there three different separate times from Chula Vista to the downtown and every time the office was basically empty. You had 50 seats set up maybe 100 and there would be like three people in them only! while many stood outside w/o appointments who were not allowed in! What a waste of staff & our tax dollars! Many of these people paid into Social Security and they deserve to be able to talk to someone without having to go through a complicated online system!! So upsetting! But I Know its not the staff thete but our CA government who will do anything they can to NOT spend our tax dollars to help the very people who paid into the system! I hope they start allowing walk in's again as they clearly are not serving all of those who need their assistance...

The Swift Water Rescue Team yesterday performed some really extremely hazardous operations by…read morerescuing stranded hotel guests and ferrying them to safety. Their specialized training and equipment came in handy for the dire circumstances that many found themselves in on December 22 as a result of extreme flooding in the Mission Valley area along the San Diego River. From the city website: "The San Diego Lifeguard Service established it's river rescue team in 1978 to respond to emergencies created by flooding. It is the task of the team to rescue persons or property threatened, surrounded or entrapped by stationary or moving water. In addition to their local responsibilities, the team is assigned to Urban Search and Rescue Task Force 8 as a member of the flood rescue component." The San Diego River Rescue Team has ten full-time lifeguards who must meet the following minimum qualifications to apply for the position on the team; Swiftwater Rescue technician I and II (a majority of the team are SRT instructors); Rescue Systems I; Vertical Cliff Rescue; SCUBA; Class B Driver's License; Marine Firefighting; Certified by San Diego Lifeguard Service as an In-surf Personal Watercraft Operator, hard hull and inflatable boats; and, meet swimming standards set by the Service. They are like the Navy Seals-only they're lifeguards. There were some Swift Water members at Fashion Valley Mall along the flooded river, watching and waiting for anyone in distress. I remember when I lived in Imperial Beach along the Tijuana River slough. Many times undocumented crossers would get trapped along the river and require assistance. I personally watched many a rescue by this fine group of specialized lifeguards. In 1993 -another very rainy year, the Team rescued over 195 people trapped or threatened by flood waters. If anyone every deserved a 5 STAR YELP, it is this great group of dedicated public servants.

When I approached, I saw a staff member named Archer. Right away, I could tell by his kind demeanor that my experience would be a pleasant one. Sure enough, Archer carried himself in a calm, nice, friendly, yet professional manner, making our interaction smooth and uneventful, which I really appreciated. I thanked Archer, told him I had a pleasant experience, and wished him a great day. Notes: -Location: Look for Zone V and walk inside; the office is very easy to locate. -Parking fee: $3 every 15 minutes ($40 maximum).

Overall, what should have been a simple appointment turned into a disappointing experience because of the way I was treated. The men that were working seemed nice though. I came here for Miramar Air Show and this was my first experience ever! It was amazing to see the…read morestatic displays of the aircraft's from various military branches. I walked through some of them and they were pretty huge! I've always seen the inside of military planes in movies but it definitely feels different when you're actually inside! There were also multiple booths in the area, with a Monster pop up, giving away free drinks. We also participated in the pie throwing fundraiser, which was a lot of fun. Although one of my friends got shaving cream all over herself and there were no paper towels nearby to wipe off. One thing to note is that there aren't very many food booths and places to sit. Also, they ran out of soap near the bathrooms. Some ppl did bring their folding chairs so at least they were prepared. I was able to snag some preferred seating during the Blue Angels Airshow & it was totally worth it! Grandstand seating was pretty tight, so make sure you go to the bathroom before the show. The precision and skill level of these pilots are astonishing! It was as though they moved as one aircraft when they performed formations. Afterwards, I was able to go to the O club & I met a few Blue Angels pilots! They were so nice and accommodating with so many ppl wanting to take a pic. Place was super lively and it was a great way to end the night!

MCAS Miramar is a USMC air station located in the San Diego Area. The base traces its lineage to…read morewell before WWII. After a variety of services used it as a home, in the 90's as p[art of the BRAC multiple USMC aviation units were consolidated there. The major unit there at present is the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing which comprises a variety of aircraft and types. They have a museum which can be difficult to access and like most bases unless you are active service or have business there it is off limits. That being said they have a killer airshow that is a must see. From a spotting standpoint it is a tough one. There are not a lot of great close in spots. I get there are noise complaints. However, for most, you bough a house next to and around a major military aviation base, and it would have been in your disclosures when you signed off in it. SO not sure what all the complaints are. Retroactive NIMBYism at its finest

I keep coming back because the running routes are breathtakingly gorgeous. So while you torture yourself running, you at least get distracted my mindblowing views. I would have to agree with others that the City of Solana Beach is super chill and not too crowded. The older I get, the more I appreciate peace, space and calm. I really love this place and so glad I'm not too far away and can enjoy this beach weekly!

This cute little town south of Encinitas and north of San Diego is a nice place to stroll around…read moreand go shopping for house decor items (lots of interior design businesses here), gifts for the ones you love, or just to grab a coffee or a bite to eat. The area on Cedros Avenue is like a walkable business district that has lots of free parking and many varied stores to shop. That business district has about 85 merchants, artisans, one-of-a-kind curators and collectors. Fashion boutiques, fine jewelry, art galleries, outdoor cafes and more, all clustered along a peaceful 2 1/2 blocks in North County's nearby Solana Beach. We loved spending time in this part of San Diego county. Relaxing and cute.
