Great service and historic place in La Jolla. My first time there. I was having lunch in the area and had a package to send and searched on Yelp for the nearest post-office. I am always fascinated by the vintage post-office, I like the clean lines, the fonts of the signage...there is an old charm vibe to them. I read at the door that was built in 1935 and when I entered I didn't expect the wonderful art on the wall. I never heard from that modernism Chicago school painter Belle Baranceanu and then got curious and read about her and her work. She lived in La Jolla until her death in 1988 and it is fantastic we can savour her art when doing a mundane task like shipping. Art for the people not for museums. Arrive during posted times, and you might find a shuttered counter with a sign lamenting "staffing issues." Other times, you have time to go through your entire social media's timeline before someone even shows up to help you. Customer Service? An oxymoron here. The sole employee, a graying woman with glasses, exudes a palpable disdain for patrons. Requests for basic supplies like tape or a marker are met with scorn, outright denial, and a minimum cost of $3.99. I once heard her shout to another person to "go to another location" just for asking a follow-up question. Need help figuring out a simple issue? Forget logic or reason. Instead of looking at the label, or listening to what you're saying, their staff would rather adhere to insane policies from several hundred years ago. They cannot trust their eyes, nor solve simple problems. Their collective intellect and imagination could hardly muster up the wattage to power a potato clock. Rather than provide helpful solutions, their mantra is "We don't do that here". Repurposing bags from USPS or Amazon? IMPOSSIBLE! You have to pay MORE for that! You can ask "but this bag is inside out and there are no visible markings on the outside. Also, this bag has already been used to send something to ME, why can't I use it again?" - It doesn't matter. They cannot trust their eyes, they cannot be decent or use logic. They must do what inconveniences you. In conclusion, this USPS branch operates less like a public service and more like a shipping version of purgatory--eternally slow, hopelessly circular, and staffed by the disinterested, bitter, and scornful souls of bureaucracy. Today, we had to mail our passport renewals and a large package overseas. Jesse waited on us and couldnt have been nicer. We had done some things incorrectly, and I had to fill out a form with which I was unfamiliar. Also the print was way small. Jesse patiently guided me through it. He helped us with the address to send the passport applications since the one I had was wrong. I am so happy that our neighborhood post office has such helpful people. read more

I certified mail a Nordstrom gift card to my daughter in New York from this branch in December. She never received it, after a month of tracking it online and being on the phone with USPS in NY for several days and hours, they told me it went to NY but it came back to San Diego on 1/4 they could not explain why. When I Called Nordstrom to see if they can cancel the card. They found out the card was used in New York online on 1/16. So it never came back to San Diego. It must have been an inside job. A carrier stole the card and scanned it so it looked like it went back to San Diego. The best part is when I asked it was a certified mail how could it get lost and they should reimburse me for it, they told me I didn't insure it so there's nothing they can do about it. I will never use USPS again to mail anything. They should go out of business in my opinion. read more

Avoid! Go next door to Box Brothers, or UPs or FedEx if possible. disappointing that this is the UPS station for La Jolla. Such a cute little building and convenient parking. I have not found lines to be long nor service to be unduly slow. However Janette behind the counter does a disservice to her fellow postal colleges. Janette is rude, abrupt, unhelpful, and even hostile. Today she advised that I did not properly tape my box and actually started removing the tape as she said she could not mail my package. Previously I have allowed others to go before me just so I wouldn't get Janette when it was my turn because she always seems to find issue with whomever it is she is "helping". Surely management knows that Janette's lack of customer service abilities make her a liability to the USPS?! I would post a pic of my box with the unsatisfactory tape, but yelp isn't offering that option. I took my package to FedEx and they had no issue with my box, and mailed it from there. read more

Went in to have a letter delivered. Cashier (Older white hair lady) was helping a guy (Mid thirties with his mask hanging out of his pocket) who was blatantly not wearing his mask even though signs are everywhere saying you MUST wear a masks (not to mention it is still MANDATED that you wear a mask). There was an older gentleman in line next to this guy. So seeing the cashier NEVER asked this guy to please wear his mask, I asked isn't it still mandated that we wear a mask? The cashier replied (Quickly in defense of this guy "People who have underlying health conditions don't have to but yes you do). The guy got angry and became confrontational and this cashier still backed this guy! This guy was clearly in great health and was adamant that he just didn't care if he wore it so why should I? He NEVER told this cashier he had a medical condition nor he never volunteered. I guess my complaint is mostly, just don't assume these people who don't want to abide by the law, that their sick, they can just be selfish, and not respectfully caring who they get sick! Today, I got lectured on the TYPE of tape I used for my package. Yes, the TYPE of tape. My package was taped. Just not with the Edith-approved-stick-it-up-your-behind-magical-packing-tape. I come to this post office frequently and only ROMY is the most helpful and does the job right. I mailed out the same letter size several times and Romy gave me the exact amount of stamps needed while other clerks would rather over sell the postage amount then give me the correct price until I had to tell one of them why can't you give me the exact postage amount in stamps?! It's the principal not the $ amount. No one wants to get ripped off, so be aware if they try to have you pay more then you really should. If you get Romy he is the honest one. read more

By far this is the most pleasant trip that I've had at the post office. I had to ship a package out to return some items that I bought online. I walked over on a weekday just before noon and there was almost no line; only one person was ahead of me. I had already brought my own padded envelope to send the items in and put the return label on before coming here. The lady who helped me (I didn't get her name) was very cheerful and friendly. Turns out that my package was just HALF AN OUNCE over one pound, so to avoid it being rounded up to 2 pounds, she suggested that I go with their flat rate padded envelope for cheaper. I really appreciated that she just didn't care and immediately just round it up, and instead found a better solution for me. Sure, I wasted $3 on the original padded envelope that I purchased elsewhere, but the total still turned out to be cheaper than what it would have been if it had been rounded up to 2 pounds. She even managed to peel off the return label off the original envelope without a problem and transferred it right over to the new flat rate envelope. She let me go to the side to switch the items over to the new envelope, and once I was finished she let me finish the transaction without having to wait in line again since I had already been in line. I've been to many post offices and it has never really been a great experience for me, but the service that I received here was so good that I had to write my review here. I'm glad that this post office is here for my convenience, with the friendly staff to help with my packages. read more

I've had a post office box here for 20 years - and it would be more trouble than it's worth to change it to another location. But the place is unpleasant, s lot of unhappy officious people, poor parking. So when I have to send a package or when I need to actually interact with a postal person - I got to the Pacific Beach office on Cass Street. I get treated well, the line moves quickly, sometimes the parking lot is full but spaces open up quickly because the postal workers inside are efficient. After 2 weeks of having 7 packages in my car, I finally got to the post office and made my way in after finding a parking spot. I had 7 packages, and one of those packages needed 1 piece of packing tape but the postal agent would not give me 1 piece because it is the 'cheap way to go'. These were all items that were being returned to the place I purchased them from. Really?? 1 piece of tape?? What ever happened to common courtesy and a little bit of kindness. I hate USPS... and I'm not surprised as why they're loosing money every year. First off, their customer service is terrible. Do they not train their employees on how to be courteous? I'm sure we've all experienced this at the DMV as well. People here just don't care. I had a undeliverable package to pick up. I called the USPS hotline and spoke with a computer for 10 minutes, and at the end it automatically goes to "Sorry the number you are trying to reach is no longer in service." What the hell? I find the actual line of my local post office, call and ask if my package is there - yes it is. I arrive at the post office, wait for 20 minutes as the workers take their sweet time wrapping a package like a 5 year old. I finally get some help and ask for my package and they said it's not there. I told them I called this location and was told it was here and they physically checked that it was here. The worker said, Nope it's not you gotta go to another location to pick it up. The worker was not the slightest bit apologetic and just yelled "next". In this day and age, if you want a business to stay afloat, you better have some top notch customer service. I'm so pissed that amazon prime ships with USPS. read more

This is the best post office EVER. I've had nothing but positive experiences with the staff here for two years! I'm not sure how to spell his name, but the manager's name is pronounced Wan and he's incredible. Super efficient, extremely knowledgeable, and definitely a problem solver. We've had numerous issues with our mail carrier not delivering mail, and Wan tracks it down every time. I've never waited more than about 5 minutes to be served here, and most times it's less than 1 minute. The checkout staff are also really helpful and efficient, and also kind. Today I got to the post office at 5:01 and just missed the door being locked. When I explained through the crack in the door that I just needed to pick up a package, the employee let me in. This is probably not what many post offices would do on a Friday at 5:00! (Note: our 92037 mail carrier is totally useless, but the staff at the actual Post Office are amazing, so that's what this review is for.) read more

I love this post office only because it's an historic icon of the village and I grew up going to it. Today I went in to send a return purchase, with a pre-paid return label, packed in the same box it arrived in, but not taped closed. I was treated like some kind of grifter! The Grey haired 'lady' didn't even greet me before loudly proclaiming "We don't GIVE AWAY free tape! You need to tape it closed YOURSELF! You can buy a roll over there for $3.99." I understand that the postal service has been under some financial pressure in the past few years, but does that mean they no longer offer COURTESY or FRIENDLY service anymore? I'm talking about a 12 inch piece of tape! I would have appreciated a simple explanation of the new policy rather than an insulting, rude comment that inferred I was trying to get something for nothing! The lady acted like the money was coming out of her own pocket!!! Incredibly RUDE. I have called multiple times each day and can NEVER reach anyone. they have limited hours M-F 10-3 and Sat 10-1. Gosh, I want those hours! If I was not required to come here for my job I would never patronize this place. They hold your PO BOX mail hostage, they lose packages or fail to track them properly. Sleazy ripoff artists. I tried to mail a $7.95 Priority Mail flat rate envelope. I was told the rate had gone up $.60 and there was an additional $.75 surcharge for the holiday season. Later I checked the USPS website. The $.60 was because they gave me an unnecessary bubble wrap envelope instead of the cardboard one, and there was nothing on the USPS website about a holiday surcharge. Well, maybe there was one and the USPS was too inefficient to mention it on their site. Who knows? The whole USPS probably won't be around much longer at this rate. read more

Can't believe I'm at the point I'm my life where I'm writing a review for the post office but HOLY SHIT these are the most rude, unhelpful assholes I have EVER dealt with. Come here if you want to get your day ruined by literally anyone on the staff. Just got talked down to bc I said I wanted to "ship" something instead of "mail" and got lectured on the difference, unreal. Apparently i added an extra city as i wanted added address specification and got complete attitude that i needed to learn the right way to address a package before stepping foot in the store. Last time I came in I needed a piece of tape to seal a package, which UPS does with zero issue anytime, and was told it "wasn't a service we offer or that you should ever expect from anyone" and got told I wasn't a paying customer. Lol so bought a roll of tape for 3.99 and while I'm taping it with two pieces of tape the guy literally requests to go on his lunch break to spite me and send me back in line, I'm talking 30-45 seconds of securing taping. It's actually ridiculous how a rude comment is made every single time I go in. So happy to read it isn't just me being treated like shit. Also get called "sir" everytime I come in? Bizarre. Avoid at all costs. UPS is SO friendly and down the street. Wish I could give zero stars. read more

I am so done shipping any packages through the PO. This has been absolutely the worst season ever with this system. Every quarter I am having to call the local postmaster about something stupid. My two favorite incidents of 2013: 1) They shipped two packages back to China, even though I filled out those peach colored forms to Redeliver them when I wasn't available. 2) They placed my Incoming mail ON TOP OF my Outgoing mail in my mailbox - on at least 3 occasions. The occasions where my mail was never picked up at all? The reason was: "You had no mail to be delivered that day. It is a courtesy for the postman to check your mailbox for outgoing mail." Beautiful. YOU'RE RIGHT THERE, driving by my very conveniently-placed mailbox. Each time I call, I am told it is my regular carrier's substitute who is making the crazy mistakes. Why is said substitute not properly trained? We pay enough postage! I have an ebay account I use to sell holiday items such as Halloween candles and mini xmas trees and the like. This has been the most stressful postal season yet for me and undoubtedly many other online sellers. Countless packages have been severely delayed, regardless of whether they are shipped Priority. Folks, Priority shipping, although expensive, is NOT GUARANTEED. Never was, and it has never been more evident to me than it has been since October 2013. I called the local postal manager, June, on numerous occasions over the years with my complaints. I like to consider myself pretty reasonable, not one to raise my voice and act like a complete a-hole to someone who represents a sucky-ass business. The last time I spoke to June...WOW, is really all I can say, to sum it up. I had called her on a recent Fri I believe, about two lost packages, two days after one of the Priority packages was due to one of my buyers. (You see, on the previous Mon, I had scheduled for the USPS to pick up four packages: 2 at the front door, two in the mailbox. They missed the front door packages, and I had to call them to come pick them up before day's end. On Wed the tracking info showed those two packages never left San Diego.) June was in a meeting at the moment and took a message to call back. Fine. Fri morn, I called back and another lady answered the phone. She took a message for me, including the tracking numbers in question. It was confirmed June would be in Sat morning. She arrives at 4am, I'm told. Sat morning I called and June answered. I politely said I had waited for her call yesterday (trying to jostle her memory). She snapped! Paraphrasing, "I HAD THREE CUSTOMERS I WAS SUPPOSED TO CALL YESTERDAY. I WAS ON THE STREET, TENDING TO AN ACCIDENT. I HAVE TO PUT YOU ON HOLD NOW." I waited, incredulous. She gets back on the phone and scolded me that I have to be patient as she has to help customers - to which I interrupted, "I *AM* A CUSTOMER!" As I proceeded to explain the issue, her demeanor changed when she realized I was at the top of her list of call-backs, and what do you know, there are the tracking numbers. No apology for her outburst. She said she had to speak to Consumer Affairs for 'guidance'; hang tight till Monday. Sheesh. Monday night I went to the Silver St office to speak to her in person, armed with printouts of the still-unchanged tracking info and a load of questions. Of course I missed her by 40 minutes. So I drove over to the Wall St office and stood in line, hoping I could speak to some sympathetic soul. Finally, I spoke to the gentleman who happened to answer the phone on Mon about having someone pick up the two missed packages. His name is Eric Gilbert and he was terrific to speak with. He was polite and explained how things get tangled up, what with inclement weather plus the holiday season. The tracking system they use is MUCH more detailed than the info we have when looking at usps.com. One of the packages was delivered; the other almost there. Unfortunately, I had already reshipped duplicate items and thus had lost money. One recipient of the two has shipped the duplicate item back to me. Eric was apologetic about the delays and said he will have a talk with June as she is supposed to be returning calls. Good! I didn't know he was higher up on the food chain. He gave me his biz card and I left feeling my humanity in the USPS was (slightly) restored. Days later, packages at the front door were missed again. This time I emailed Eric and he responded the next day, saying he spoke to all the carriers that they need to carefully read the online forms submitted to them (for crying out loud). Last Sat, my single - and scheduled Priority package was missed. I didn't bother emailing Eric. What diff does it make? Now...I have a peeved buyer of this package who never received it, a solid week later. At the same time, a Priority package *I* was due three days ago appears to never have left IN. For large packages, it's UPS for me from now on. The USPS can go down in flames for all I care. read more

Isnt it so strange how much people talk about everyone in La Jolla being so stuck up however this post office in comparison to the crap post office in Pacific Beach is honestly no comparison? Seriously, this review is not about the Pacific Beach Post Office but in order to make a point about this post office I need to remind the reader about how much the PB Post Office BLOWS. Contrary to what they say there, you actually ARE allowed to use their tape. I know this because I saw someone using Priority tape to seal a priority box at the LJ Post Office and inquired about whether or not it was a special privilege solely reserved for the person using the tape at that moment. IT IS NOT A SPECIAL PRIVILEGE PB JERKS! Anytime you are mailing a priority box, contrary to the jerks at the PB Office, you do NOT have to buy a roll of tape, you are just able to use their priority tape. Thank you for that clarification. Also, the ladies that work at the LJ Post Office never look like they absolutely hate anything and everyone on the planet. Occasionally the PB people are in a good mood but you never know what youre going to get. I dont like uncertainties such as that! And the PB Post Office is always out of multiple things, whether it be certain stamps, or the super cute 'Greetings from Southern California' flat rate boxes. WHY? YOU ARE SO BUSY. WHY ARE YOU NOT ALWAYS FULLY STOCKED ON POSTAL ITEMS?? Overall, as much as I love PB, I love La Jolla that much more. This pleasant post office always has every item you need and is just wonderful.
