WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT I am writing to express my disappointment with the lack of communication and follow through from your team. I had a scheduled video call with Cody J. and he never showed up, nor did he send an email to reschedule. I waited online for well over 10 minutes and when I reached out to him, I received no response. This was incredibly frustrating as I had been looking forward to having my questions answered about your doctorate program. After not hearing back from Cody, I attempted to schedule another call online in hopes of speaking with someone else. Unfortunately, I did not receive a response from anyone on your team. It has now been over 2 weeks and I have yet to receive a follow up or phone call regarding my interest in the program. I had high hopes for Pacific Oaks and was excited about the possibility of pursuing my doctorate with your institution. However, the lack of communication and follow through has left me feeling disappointed and frustrated. I hope that in the future, your team can improve in this area to better support potential students like myself. read more

When researching schools, you are at the mercy of the reviews written about that school. You must discern if all the praise or all the warnings are truthful and accurate. When I researched the master's program for marriage and family therapy at Pacific Oaks College, I noticed several reviews that praised this program and only three reviews that warned future students about attending this college. I assumed these three people were just bitter and angry individuals. Surprisingly, these three people were telling the truth. Pacific Oaks College falsely claims to be there for the students in all situations. They claim that since they are a smaller college they have the unique ability to get to know the students and be their advocate. When the students enter the practicum portion of the program, Pacific Oaks promises they will ensure that each practicum site will provide the education, experience and supervision required for each student to graduate. All of this is a lie. Just as the three negative but truthful reviews mentioned once this college gets your money, they are no longer available to you. If you are having issues at your practicum site, they will not advocate for you or assist you or intervene on your behalf. Certain sites especially for the LGBTQI specialty cohort and practicum sites that are at schools do not offer enough hours, so you end up having to take an additional semester of practicum. You may not be eligible to graduate with your cohort if you cannot gain enough hours. Pre-practicum classes are a joke. At each practicum site you are in group supervision with students from other colleges. I had students from Azusa Pacific and Loyola Marymount students in my group supervision. My basic knowledge on practicum etiquette was lacking. I did not know half as much as they knew, so it was extremely embarrassing knowing that we had not been properly prepared for practicum. Speaking of being prepared, be careful with the professors at this school. If you oppose certain professors' views or ask clarifying questions to certain professors, they may feel challenged by you. If they feel challenged, they will retaliate, and you will see a noticeable drop in your future grades for that class. Your best bet is to agree with everything they say, and smile and nod during classroom discussions. If you are fortunate enough to enroll in a class taught by Dr. Erica Rodriguez, Dr. Eugenia Rodriguez, Dr. Creet, Professor October, Professor Julie Walker or Professor Edward Bielecki NOT S. Bielecki consider yourself fortunate and absorb all that they teach you. They are solid instructors with a wealth of knowledge. Beware of Professor Paige, S. Bielecki, and D. Doyle. Also, no matter how sincere Dr. Kami sounds he will not assist you or follow through with whatever promise he says he will do. Lastly, make copies of EVERY document you have for pre-practicum and each semester of practicum. These documents are required for graduation, and some are sent to the Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) once you graduate. The practicum coordinator lost our documents FIVE times. We were scrambling trying to locate files and resubmit them in order to graduate and receive our associate number. I really hope you heed my warning just as I wished I had believed the three honest reviews when I was researching this school. Save yourself the money, stress and frustration. Terrible communication with the advisors and overall the whole department with student accounts, admissions, and financial aid. If you have Latina Harris as in advisor good luck getting in touch with her. Honestly, don't know the type of advisor she is. They choose the courses for you at least that's what they did with me. Tried dropping as a whole student due to being financial and mentally unstable. Emailed Latina about it but never heard back from her. My dumbass decided to make a post for the first day of instruction which because of I making that post it made me a official student. Teacher never dropped me after not attending besides making that post for the first day. I now got sent to collections and owe a big amount of money. Student accounts and admissions couldn't help. You'll just get scammed honestly. Facility doesn't give you the help you need. Better of going to CSUF that's way cheaper or any other program read more

This "college" is a diploma mill. The quality of education is less than mediocre, as are the remedial instructors and predatory administrators. I completed the masters program, coursework and thesis in 2019, but the Department Chair, CARLENE FIDER, harassed me tirelessly, due to my sexual orientation, and I was forced to drop out. I returned to P.O. last year, when I was diagnosed with an inoperable condition and I decided that I wanted, "M.A." at the end of my name in my obituary. In my re-entry orientation I was informed Carlene Fider, the administrator who had harassed me and forced me to drop out, would be my Academic Advisor. Due to the pathological, malevolent administration, amateur instructors and lack of ANY real notable alumni, I would STRONGLY advise anyone considering attending this diploma mill, to reconsider. It was so nice to visit my Alma Mater, but Things have changed so much over the past 10 years though that I felt like I was at a different place altogether. I went to the "registrars office" to get a copy of my official transcripts. Before I could get there though, I had to sign in with a security guard before walking the hallways to get them. After the walk, we arrive only to find out that they don't take in person transcript requests and that everything is done online now. What a bummer! Now I have to drive all the way home and use my computer to get my transcripts :( I go home and make the order and it turns out to be about $15. Okay, that's fine but then I find out that in order for everything to be complete, I have to sign to authorize the release of the transcripts! My overall assessment is that the transcript request system is stupid. If I had to sign something to get my transcripts then I should have been able to do it in person when I was there. read more

I remember first learning about PO while completing my AA in ECE at LATTC. A majority of my Professors were Alumni and often raved about the school. I eventually took a tour of the school and found the experience to be beautiful and it gave me the sense that this was a place that I could grow not just in my academic career, but as a person too. Time went on and I hit the working world running and many years later completed my Bachelors at an entirely different institution. Transitioning from ECE to Social Work I knew that I wanted to obtain an MSW and began to look for school. Because Instagram does a great job at keeping track of your Cookies/Search history, I began to see ads for PO which sparked my previous intrest. During my initial call I was put into contact with an AMAZING woman name Latina Harris. During our time working together she was able to better my understanding of the school and how it's designed philosophy aligned with what I shared that I wanted for myself. For a whole year she took the time to help me chip away at the steps needed to move forward with enrollment, educate me on best practices for time management for my program, sharing info on how to obtain Grants, wellness check-ins, and the ways that I would be able to create support systems in my learning environment. She even went as far as to have me come tour the campus where I met a few Deans for my specific program who engaged in conversation about my vision for academic success. At no point did I feel as if I was a sell. I believe that Latina genuinely wanted what was best for me and to be sure that I was making an informed decision. Ultimately I've choose not to move forward, for personal reason, however I felt that it was important to share my experience under the guidance and support of someone so phenomenal. Latina if you ever read this I'd like you to know that your time, conversations, shared knowledge and grace is what helped me to put more thought into what was best for me. Though my pursuit for an MSW is on pause, you are also apart of the reason that I'm still continuing to move forward with my identified passion. You will forever be appreciated. read more

I start PO this fall, but so far, I am very impressed with the level of organization and consistency they have shown. From the moment I applied, I was assigned an admissions counselor, I was assigned an academic advisor, I was assigned a financial aid advisor. This to me is very impressive, coming from UCs and Cal States, where you are completely on your own and no one advises you to do anything unless you seek advisement yourself. Yes, you are paying 3-4 times more, but the level of care the staff has shown me thus far makes me feel like it will be worth every penny. Also, they are very generous with scholarships... I did not even apply for one, and they already awarded a small amount to me. The loan process is quick, unlike other school that make you wait weeks and months! So far, I am very pleased with the quick responses to my emails and the urgency to run things smoothly. read more

I wish I would have followed my gut with all of the bad reviews on here. The school is very unorganized. The departments do not communicate with each other. Financial aid doesn't know what they are doing - they put me in their system as a grad student instead of undergraduate student and then they tried to charge me for upper division classes. As student of this school, I would strongly advise searching elsewhere. From the start, many aspects of the enrollment process have been misleading. I will say the staff members are extremely friendly. However, there is no communication or follow-up from counselors, the layout of classes was misleading from the start, and honestly, everything is a bit old school. I truly feel that I was misled completely and everything should have seemed too good to be true from the start. As someone who chose to do online classes as opposed to in-person, I was surprised to see how much there is miscommunication between professors and those who create the program in general. Professors are hit and miss as well, you either have the ones who nitpick and dock every point or you get those who give full credit for everything you turn in. You are truly on your own when it comes to your own education, which to me is not worth the $$$ you pay for. It is really like you are teaching yourself, and all the school does is give you a grade and a diploma. Overall, I had a great experience at PO. There were only several professors I thought should not be teaching, but the rest of my professors were inspiring, challenging, supportive, and encouraging throughout my entire time. I would recommend this college to those that are seeking spaces that are multicultural and social justice-oriented. Be prepared to put in the effort as I did study alongside students who were entitled and saw any form of discomfort or effort as something to complain and whine about. I will say you get what you put in as with any institution. I learned a lot and took away a lot. This review is for the College not the Children's Center. I graduated from PO in 2018, my experience was slightly less than satisfactory. Im glad I was able to work full-time throughout the BA in ECE program but it was difficult. It was especially difficult because some professors lacked any awareness of their whiteness. I will never forget the feedback I received to an assignment where we were asked to address race in education. I was docked points for using the term "white supremacy". The feedback I received from this professor was that I shouldn't use the term white supremacy because it creates greater disparities amongst races. PO prides itself for being culturally responsive and for its awareness of social justice, yet some of their professors lack what they promote. I'm currently in a Grad program and none of my professors (including white professors) have had an issue with me using "white supremacy" in conversations about race. If I could give this school zero stars, I would. DO NOT ATTEND THIS SCHOOL. It is a scam. I attended online for only a semester. It was the worst academic experience of my life! I was somehow convinced by the advisor (who, in retrospect, was clearly recruiting me, not advising me) to "finish my BA in Human Development." The first red flag should have been this so-called "Human Development" major. I've never heard of this major! It's not offered at any other school, and as far as I can determine, it is completely made up. So, I started my four classes. In one course, I seriously spent the whole time making "about me"- type art. Like we did in 4th grade! I'm serious. Activities included MAKING A COLLAGE ABOUT OUR IDENTITIES and writing poetry about a time when we felt hurt. Nothing in this course can be considered college-level in any way. This was a 400-level course, apparently. In another course, the focus was on "self-esteem." My classmates and my instructor used this course as therapy and we were encouraged to "reflect" on our own self-esteem. Let me tell you one thing: You would NEVER find these kinds of assignments in a state university. Nothing about these courses were college-level. It felt like being in a mandatory online therapy program. I left after a semester with $12,000 in loans and four courses I couldn't transfer to any other university. Pacific Oaks is not what it used to be. I'm a master's degree alumni (less than ten years ago) and I am very disappointed by all of the changes at Pacific Oaks - most of which are not for the better. While I had a very good experience there, I cannot recommend the school because the quality is questionable. Their financial aid is good for people entering the program but quickly drops off after a student's first semester. I am proud of my PO degree but greatly disappointed in the school since it was acquired by the Chicago Schools. read more

It's very unfortunate how absolutely downhill the school has gone. It's beautifully remodeled they have a very good security system and aesthetically it's very professional-looking. However I'll Pacific Oaks does is really you in and then pray on the fact that you are working as you get your degree and most of the people who are there are also with family so you have someone who is going back to school working a job probably in teaching so they're doing the extra work that comes with being a teacher and then coming home and being a husband or wife or father or mother and then they're doing the work Pacific Oaks continuing their education. So what Pacific Oaks does is take all that into consideration and misconstrue your academic timeline so that they can get the most money out of you and they are counting on you being so busy to not catch these things and you end up staying there longer and your counselors change so much that you can go through three or four during the course of your educational career at Pacific Oaks. They are horrible at support they love getting you through the door and getting you signed up and real then but they are horrible again I repeat horrible at keeping in contact with you making sure that you are on track and getting back to you in a timely manner. I myself graduated in 2016 I ended up taking a class I didn't even need and when I approached my counselor about that the only thing they offered me was well it will get you more money when you apply for your next job. That may be so but it was an unnecessary class that I had to take and a waste of my time I could have been finished faster. They count on you not holding them accountable because who has the time for that. My husband is currently going through the program and of course he was told that he can finish in December and now he was told he's going to finish an April because apparently the classes that they said he was going to have in December aren't being offered so now he's going to spend every semester taking only one class when he is more than capable of taking two classes and not once they mention those possibilities to him all they wanted to do was entice him to come into the school they reeled him in and again they switched up on him. It's expensive and it's unfortunate that the school had such a great reputation and now since they've been taken over as a for-profit college it's just gone down hill. I would not recommend the school to anyone my husband was going to take his master's there but now we're looking into other places. read more

I am a recent graduate and had a phenomenal experience at PO. Although I graduated from a Cal State school with a B.S. (3.98 g.p.a.), PO empowers their students to self-reflect and really go through the personal journey of how your real-life experiences are extensions you can bring to your work environment. If you are looking for the traditional book memorization to prepare for an exam while retaining only a portion of the material you receive in the "traditional" university setting PO is not the place for you. Emphasizing social justice, equity, and anti-bias is the basis of your writings. I actually attended the Pasadena campus for most of my classes because I wanted the PO experience, but found my online classes just a personalized. As I read the above post, no school is without having a student encounter financial aide/administration concerns. I attended from 2016 to 2018, and I'm surprised by the bad reviews. Personally, I never had a problem with the office. In fact, I experienced the opposite. Compared to a school with a larger student body, I found there was more one-on-one care given to students. My advisor, Ted, helped me take care of everything, including scheduling all of my classes, and I had no problems during my time there. Whenever I had a question about scholarships or changing my specialization, they were answered by him. If like me, you are transferring here from a community college and plan on finishing your degree with no stops, it will probably be smooth sailing. I cannot speak for people who stop their courses and start again. Keep in mind the tuition is expensive and can stop some people temporarily, especially if one does not apply for scholarships or financial aid. read more

DO NOT GO HERE. 0 stars. This college is a scam. I worked long and hard on my Human Development Masters degree. The courses are so expensive that I had to take one class at a time in order to save enough to take the next class. I was almost finished with my masters (I had ONE class left, and my thesis) but I took a year off due to illness. When I came back NONE OF MY PAST CLASSES were "valid" because they "changed their program". I got a lawyer and fought the case but they only accepted 9 credits in the end. So, I am a recent 2015 graduate and I don't give good reviews if it isn't well-deserved. What can I say... I'm honest! Initially, I didn't care for the school. I came from the Cal State system and wasn't used to the teaching style of a small private school. At first, It was intimidating for me to have attention put on me in class (This is PO's style). Throughout my graduate career at PO, I came to realize that Pacific Oaks caters to your needs and pushes you to excel at the same time. At Pacific Oaks you have a voice and it matters. Not something that I was used to at the CAL STATE level. I attended PO on and off since 2010 and have never had a problem with Financial Aid or advisors. Over the years, I've learned to appreciate the smallness of the school as well as the professors and each department (Registrars, Admissions, FA, Counselor, and Student Advisor). They were extremely helpful when I had questions. In terms of the MFT program, they are pretty organized (I wouldn't attempt to go to a school that wasn't). I can't speak for the other programs because I'm not familiar with them. Overall, My experience was long and expensive, but great! As with any school, do your research to make sure it's the right fit for you. If you decide to go to PO, you will definitely learn quite a bit about yourself. It's challenging in the best way. I love this school. They turn out great caring and informed therapists. They are nurturing and the instructors are largely wonderful. I've worked with many therapists post graduate from all different MFT programs around LA and they aren't as well equipped or well educated in being a good therapist as the ones who came out of Pacific Oaks. If you are looking for advisors who will help you through school and understand the requirements for your degree do not go here. I attended this school for three years. First the school offered me a payment plan that I didn't know about till later- if I took only a certain amount of credits my payment for each month would have been manageable but my advisor assigned me more credits. Also I was in the credential program and not to my knowledge you are supposed to student teach ( I knew that) but it had to be at a public school. I was already working and had a full time job at a private school. They wanted me to basically quit for two months to student teach with no pay. When I found this out I stopped going to the school and requested to be withdrawn. And they made me pay for the tuition fee when I could not finish the schooling and they did not tell me till later that I had to withdraw at a certain time. Keep in mind I did not know I would have to stop going to Pacific Oaks because of student teaching so of course I missed the deadline. Their advisory staff is terrible. Their financial aid and registrars office do not talk to you in a timely manner. I tried to talk to them about this issue and it took 4 months to handle this issue. I essentially scheduled an appointment with an advisor and he was able to schedule my whole two years there so I didn't have to worry at all about enrolling for the right classes or forgetting to enroll. I graduated from a Cal State school with honors and started PO Spring 2016. I have nothing but good words for them and would encourage anyone to call the school if they had questions regarding enrollment or to visit during an orientation. I have noticed a majority of the negative post are related to financial aid and my experience has been purely positive. Before you enroll, you are advised the number of classes you will need to complete your program and the tuition rate, so there are no surprises. You only pay for your enrolled units. The Students accounts department is always accessible to answer questions. When you enroll, you have an enrollment counselor who will guide you through your initial steps, enroll you in your classes, and make sure you know who your faculty advisor and student advisor will be. These individuals are there throughout your PO journey, to answer any questions you may have about the program. Your designated student advisor can assist you with class enrollment if you are not comfortable with doing it yourself, but in all honesty, you find your class and click select. It is really not that difficult. As far as generating statements, I can simply log into my current account, and view my account. I feel they have been responsive, with email responses usually received the same day or within 24 hours. Although, I am not a Human Development major, there are many schools who offer this degree such as Azusa Pacific, CSU's, UC's. Hope this helps. My experience as a student at Pacific Oaks College was a positive one. I received my BA in Human Development Fall 2007; MA in Human Development/ Leadership in Education-College Teaching Adults 2016. I received positive experiences from many of Pacific Oaks students who were teaching Child Development courses with Los Angeles Community Colleges. Two of the staff were directors with the child development centers. LA Valley College and LA Mission College. I highly recommend PO if you pursue a career in working with young children, or teaching child development or early childhood education with the community colleges. Many community colleges are hiring for Fall 2018. I have received several applications. Register with the California Community College Chancellor office. Some colleges starting pay for child development teachers are $62.00 per hour. Dr. C. Cruz, Dr. Jones, Martha Clark, Dr. ReGena Booze were just a few of my professors. I am in my last semester at PO and couldn't be happier to be done with the place. My experience started out well, but when my advisor left suddenly in the spring of this year, I have been assigned 2 replacements and now am left without an advisor at all. The school of education has fallen apart and it is almost impossible to get any answers from anyone there. The people in the finance department are downright rude. For the amount of money I am paying, I should be getting a lot more assistance. One of my professors has not graded any of my assignments or returned any of my emails in almost a month. Everyone was so friendly and accommodating when they wanted to get me in, but now that I am stuck there, it is up to me to figure out how to finish. Our daughter started at Pacific Oaks in August 2014 and we are still trying to resolve a tuition issue. The run around, lack of organization, compassion and lack of any communication makes me wonder if we selected the proper school for her continuing education. The Student Finance division is a joke. The veiled promises to assist with student issues is smoke and mirrors - no one follows through or keeps commitments. The financial aid department at this school is awful! All they care about is taking your money. They are disorganized and unprofessional. My worst experience was with Seph Rodriguez. He is a cocky and arrogant. I can't believe this school hired him as the Financial Aid Director. He's totally incompetent. Don't waste your money or time with this place. read more
