I'M BACK! My journey began in 2010/11 when I moved to San Diego and wanted to find a boxing gym to…read morejoin. I came to American Boxing because it was close to where I lived and I stayed (for 3 years!) because of the coaching I received. I boxed with Coach Dave for about a year before he recruited me to try Muay Thai. The rest of my time there I trained 6 days a week in both sports! I loved every second. Coach Dave is legit. He's a good trainer, doesn't take any bullsh*t, and pushes you to be your best. My goal was to advance in the sport, improve my technique, and get in the best shape of my life. And I accomplished all of those things with Coach Dave. I personally like his teaching style. He's big on technique and explaining the "why" behind it and giving you great insight into the bigger picture of what you are learning. But what I liked most is he has this ability to push me and remove any obstacles (mostly mental) I could come up with to not push myself. It's like he knew what I was capable of even though I didn't. It also helped that Dave walked his talk. He's a champion, he can do all (and more) of what he is asking you to do. For years he pushed me and for years I excelled. I was strong, slim, fast, conditioned, and had abs for days. Then, I had to move away. :-( Through the years I have trained at other Muay Thai gyms always searching for a new "Dave." Trying to find a gym and a trainer that actually TRAINS me. Not someone who just goes through the motions or puts me through an aerobic workout class. It's been years since I trained with Dave and just recently he reached out letting me know he is offering on-line training and I didn't even blink. I was training with him the very next day! I am back with my favorite trainer to TRAIN the sport I love and get back into fighting shape. I have a ways to go but I honestly don't trust anyone else to help me get there the way I trust Dave. I feel like I lost a part of me when I left American Boxing and I now have a second chance to get it back!

He's a walking, talking ego. His behavior was rude, immature and actually quite irrational. Not sure why he would behave like that toward people who were going to be longtime members of his gym, but now that I've read some of the other reviews it doesn't surprise me at all. Don't waste your time even checking this place out. With an owner like that they'll be out of business soon anyway, and you can be sure there won't be any membership refunds when they do.

The students, both adults and kids alike, are a tight knit community. They show up for each other at fights, cheering for one another on livestreams, warmly provide feedback when training, and they even play with our girls before and after class. This sense of community trickles down from the coaches, who genuinely care about how we are doing, inside, and outside the gym. 2. The instruction is world-class, literally. Ahmad and Destry have 30+ years of experience (estimating) between them - not to mention dozens of belts, and it shows. They know how to break down complex concepts and strategies for novice athletes (both adults and kids). 3. Muay Thai is for everyone and Ahmad and Destry will reinforce that daily. You absolutely don't have to want to 'fight.' If you want to get stronger, learn to protect yourself, or just get some intense cardio, the classes will work for you. If you want to fight, you can do that too. Also want to shoutout the volunteer coaches (who also train) - Marisol, Eric Maddie, Omar. You all are just as critical to our success as students. Thank you. We're looking forward to continuing to grow with EKG. They're on a journey as a gym, and it's been a lot of fun to take the ride with them. My girls (ages 6 and 3), love going daily, and they make that decision for themselves. We highly recommend you trying it out for yourselves. It's life changing. And if you don't take my word for it, listen to my 3 and 6 year old - "I love Muay Thai. Just try it, it's fun. Coach Ahmad is so silly and Coach Destry works so hard with me and I love him."

After google searching gyms and stumbling upon this gym's website and instagram, I felt welcoming vibes instantly, and could definitely get the sense that these guys were professional, enthusiastic, and good at what they do. Their resumes, belts, and fighters' records speak for themselves. However, their ability to coach muay thai is only part of what makes this gym so great. The team here is awesome at the intangibles of fostering good vibes, making everyone feel welcome while maintaining the balance with the seriousness of what they do and what the sport is all about. Lastly, they keep the place in great shape, taking cleanliness very seriously and always improving the facilities and equipment the way they know how. Highly recommend those of all ages and levels who are seeking professional instruction with good vibes to check out this gym at least for their week trial. Important note: their new location is at 1241 E Vista Way Vista, CA 92084

I started training here in February, coming off a year hiatus from muay thai due to an ACL tear. Before I even started my first class, I immediatley felt welcomed. Kru (Coach) Brian introduced himself right away and got to know me and my skill level. In the almost seven years since I started training, I have never had a muay thai coach deliver instruction with such detail, but in a way that is understandable to all levels of students present in the class. Brian is extremely perceptive at observing movement and identifying exactly what needs to be adjusted to help everyone perfect the technique we are working on, and he is really good at explaining things in multiple ways. He is a really great teacher, as well as an awesome fighter too! The classes are structured in a way where we build upon techniques over the week (or longer term), which is great for developing your skillset, and also wonderful for refining your technique if you've been in the game for a while. Along with great instruction, the gym is very much absent of any "ego"...but don't assume this means the other students aren't serious about the sport. There is a group of badass fighters that train here, and they are happy to train with others at all levels. Everyone is genuinely friendly, which gives the gym a great vibe and makes me look forward to heading to the gym as often as possible. Final, but important notes: all equipment in the gym is in great condition and the gym is very clean. They also recently started a strength and conditioning program. These have been awesome workouts thus far! If you're looking for a place to train muay thai and/or get in shape, whether you are new to the sport or an experienced pro, you need to check out Prime.

Their Ocean Beach location is nice too, but really sets this one apart is its outdoor deck. I've always believed yoga is exponentially better when it's outdoors, and the vibes of this outdoor deck are immaculate. I love practicing in the shade under the coverings, among lots of plants and nice classmates (everyone I've encountered here is lovely). Every class I've been to here, from vinyasa to slow flow to hatha, has been basically perfect. Also, parking isn't too bad, and I love Bird Rock. My favorite thing is stopping by Calumet Park before or after class, since it's only a couple blocks away and offers a killer ocean view. Whether you're a seasoned yogi or you've never tried yoga before, I would definitely recommend checking out Riffs! It's both accessible for beginners and authentic for those who are more into yoga.

I also love the little altar that they have set up on the steps in between the instructor and the deck where the students are practicing. They always have it decorated with seasonal items and it's so pretty. I really enjoy the instructors. Today was Asia and she always teaches such an engaging flow. I also enjoy the classes with the live music. What I'm not a big fan of is the wellness area they have set up behind the studio in the grassy area adjacent to the yoga deck. They do cold plunge out there during the class and to be honest, I find it distracting. During today's class there was someone in the cold plunge in the beginning, fortunately that person was very quiet, but I was aware that they were back there. There have been other times when I was there when there were people in the cold plunge and they were laughing and talking while the class was going on. I get it that the studio is in the heart of Bird Rock that there is other noise from the street, from the taco shop next-door, etc. But to have the distraction in the space you are practicing in is not ideal. When I checked in at the front, the girl who had me sign the waiver asked me if I was aware that they had a wellness area behind the studio. I told her yes, and that I was not a big fan of it. She told me that they are brainstorming ways to separate that area from the front of the studio more efficiently. Hopefully they come up with some solutions!
