Ive been coming here for over half year. Ive been coming here for over half year. Its the most inclusive and welcoming gym I have been to. Kru will always fight any toxic behavior. He has a way of spotting it and dealing with it such that no party is offended. The folks who train here are not the LuluLemon kind usually, although everyone is welcome. ~Setting~ The gym has a variety of bags and wall mounted equipment. There is no lifting equipment, but there is all you'll ever dream of in a boxing/Muay Thai gym. ~Instruction~ The technique is superior. Its the only (traditional, not kickboxing) Muay Thai gym in San Diego. Kru is a proper Kru who trained for many years in Thailand, and has a ton of professional fights in Asia and the Americas. He is humble, never sharing his record unless you ask (which I suggest). ~Lessons~ The group lessons start with an hour of teaching technique with a partner, and then there is an hour of cardio where Kru himself often holds pads for you. Where else are you going to find a Kru doing that? Also, the private sessions are a great way to go as Ive gotten already 2 sets myself. I've been at King Tiger now for three weeks now, and I'm definitely impressed with Kru (the instructor), as well as the curriculum and the character of my fellow classmates. Speaking as a girl, it can definitely feel intimidating walking into a new martial arts environment. Some gyms can even have an additional feeling of constant competition or "no one has time to help the newbie" attitude. But King Tiger is the exact opposite; Kru is an amazing fighter but also great at breaking down the techniques, is patient, funny, and very humble. Likewise, the class is very diverse, friendly, talented, and hardworking. They made sure I felt comfortable as a newcomer and I've felt a family atmosphere here since day 1. The 2 hr workout tends to go like this: you warm up before class begins, bow in, and then start going over some Muay Thai combat techniques with partners. You won't just learn the techniques but also the explanation of Muay Thai/boxing terms, why the techniques are effective, and when is the best situation to use them. After about 4 demo's of techniques, we'll do some cardio training and bag/pad work. Finally, the workout finishes with some biometric training: working on abs, strength resistance, push-ups, legs, etc. After bowing out, those who want to stay to spar are welcome to! It's quite a workout and very satisfying at the end of it because you're doing everything together as a team, which pushes you to want to work even harder. Sometimes the class will even go out after practice to the movies, get dinner, or plan weekend BBQ's which really shows a sense of comraderie and friendship outside the gym, too. Class is offered every day M-F which makes it more convenient as well. Price is reasonable and you pay by month. Parking has been free and no problem, there's a lot that's right above the gym and there's street parking too. I would advise to bring a full water bottle (you WILL sweat a LOT) and do be prepared to get partnered up for practice. If you don't have your own gloves the gym can lend some but eventually you should get your own. If you decide to buy your own Muay Thai shorts, get them early because shipping takes forever! It offers a wide variety of striking which involves punches, elbows, knees, kicking or we can refer to as 8 limbs. Here the kru (trainer) is a very experienced fighter who fought as pro in thailand with over 300 fights!! Hes one of those guys. I used to train in northern California and I had a really hard time finding the right Muay Thai class that was genuine to the discipline and not another kickboxing class. The Kru is a great teacher that really breaks down in steps traditional Muay Thai moves. He really emphasizes that his establishment is a school and I really enjoy that aspect of it.
