We spent about 90 minutes at this park, primarily on the boardwalk. We also drove to the area along the water, where people were fishing. The road is pretty rutted and uneven. Our purpose in visiting the park was to look for migrating bird species. While I ended up photographing mostly hummingbirds, there were also orchard and Baltimore orioles, scissor-tailed flycatchers, and other migrating species to be found. There are a few shady refuges for those visiting the park, mainly along the boardwalk. One has a good seating area. This is an unheralded gem of a place to visit... and it's adjacent to another cool spot, the Texas Sealife Center, a volunteer-run rescue facility.

Great trip; highly recommended…read more The purpose of our weekend in the area was to see whooping cranes, and the company guarantees a sighting - they know where the cranes hang out and we saw at least a dozen pairs. We saw many other birds (the captain called them out) and dolphins. The boat holds at least 30 guests and has both open observation decks and enclosed seating below. Wear non-slip shoes and bring binoculars, a hat, and a jacket. There are small toilets on board, and we were served drinks and basic snacks. They have about a dozen loaner binoculars if you do not have a pair.

Ty and Theresa are Rockport-area experts and will put you in position to catch a lot of fish. Check out their popular YouTube channel, 30 miles out, to see them in motion. They're also both really great people. They will teach you how to catch fish, no matter your level of experience fishing or kayaking.
