I've heard this is the only major surfboard rental shop by the national seashore. We rented out their full selection of beginner boards, which was only five, so we had to go to another shop afterwards. The service was amazing as the guy at the shop was very attentive and helped us load and strap our boards to the car. The boards were Surftech and were good quality. Your typical surf shop at the beach. Tons of beach gear and clothing. Your typical surfer employee, waiting for the shift to be over to hit the surf. Very helpful, watched them help a few guys with fixes right then and there. The prices are a bit high, but all brand-name surf wear. It is definitely the best surf shop in the area. read more

I just bought my first long board with very little knowledge about boarding. Both if the clerks were willing to talk to me about what I wanted out of ny first board, why some of the boards I was looking at may not be the right choice. They even suggested cheaper products. We went here looking for a board for my daughter. The staff was very helpful. I felt like they were very knowledgable and explained the equipment very well. Their prices are fare and they are stocked up with new and used equipment. They are definitely worth a stop while shopping for all types of surfboards and kayaks. The parking situation could be a bit better but it's not a big deal. They do try to sell sell sell but I like that in a world where you get completely ignored by staff while trying to buy something at big box stores like best buy. Great surf & watersports store, large selection of surf boards and relevant gear. Recently, rented a double kayak which includes paddles, lifejackets and car tie-downs ($65). Extremely friendly & helpful staff. Made the experience quick & painless. We were in, out, & on the water as quick as possible. My wife and I are novices. We have recently purchased a paddle board from them and we enjoy it so much (We wanted to make sure) that we purchased a second one so that we can enjoy it together. Frank runs a first class operation. Every time that we have been in there, and it was a decent number of times before pulling the trigger, every person in the shop is extremely friendly. Every one of them has a passion for the water and it shows. I personally was thinking a kayak for me originally but with the options I had with the Kahuna I could have the best of both worlds. Being it was our first time taking out kayaks on Padre Island, we were clueless! Always stop by here on surf trips down to Port Aransas (usually cause I forgot to pack something) Good deals on stuff, awesome knowledgeable staff. They'll rent equipment too wether it be surf or kayak your looking for. Just make sure you get off before you go across the causeway. Called half an hour before we planned to stop at the shop. Guy on the phone was very knowledgeable and helped us get some idea of the surf spots on the island. They were able to help us strap two boards on our Jeep and prices for all day rentals were moderate. They also have some cool clothes and water sports gear just in case you forgot something at home. Returning the boards was simple and I def recommend stopping by this shop. read more

I've been in here a few times and the staff is always really nice and helpful. I recently bought a roof rack from them and the guys working were super helpful. I installed it outside of the shop and they told me to come in if I have any questions. I had a couple of hiccups and they took the time to help me out and make sure my rack was installed properly. These guys are awesome! I didn't get their names, but I had two guys help me and they were both very helpful and nice. I bought my first kayak there so I didn't really know much. They helped me narrow my choices down to 2 and then they took those 2 kayaks down the street for me and put them in the water so I could give them a test drive. This was extremely helpful, as the kayaks handled very differently and I actually was leaning towards buying the one that I ended up not liking very much. They even watched me in the water and helped me choose the best fit. They did it all with a great attitude too, they didn't make me feel stupid or anything. :) You just don't get that kind of service at Academy. :) read more
