A dreadful place. I would give it no stars if it were possible.
I have had various piercings before and last week, upon discovering the piercer at Red across the road had gone home for the day, I went to Pagan for an upper ear (helix) piercing and a second lobe stud. I figured it wasn't as classy a place as Red, but with that location and a fairly decent shop front, I didn't expect it would be dodgy.
My doubts began the second I stepped through the door. Marked and scuffed emulsion-painted walls, dusty counters, no waiting area or chairs, some tacky jewellery in a crappy glass case, a single Ed Hardy poster and grubby lino flooring do not make for a welcoming piercing shop. I paid £16 to the croaky old lady at the desk for the two piercings a good price, but as I will go on to describe, the place is a shoddy set up.
Firstly, at no point was there any sign of a consent form or an aftercare leaflet. This is illegal. Still, I paid my £16 and was taken straight through the door to the chair. The chair faces the wall and they prepare the piercing behind your back not cool. I had chosen plain silver studs ( as opposed to plain gold) and had not been offered the choice of a ring. This should have rung alarm bells, but I was keen to get pierced on that day and so I didn't think much of it.
My first piercing was done by the man aged around 60, and (inexplicably) the second one by the woman aged around 50. Both were rough looking. The bloke confirmed my choice of placement and then (without putting on any gloves) proceeded very rapidly to mutter a bit sharp, not sore and pierce from behind me, with a piercing gun. I was shocked it hadn't even crossed my mind that he might not use a needle. It was completely irresponsible of him, guns are unsuitable for anything other than lobe piercings, and most proper piercing joints will use a needle for these too. It must have been obvious that I knew this practise was wrong, as when I turned and said I didn't realise it would be a gun, will that affect the healing at all? the guy was swiftly gone. He completed the piercing in less than 30 seconds, which felt rushed and unprofessional, but was nothing compared to the anger I felt at being secretly pierced with a gun significantly higher up than the dot I had drawn.
A minute or so later the woman came in to do the lobe piercing. She was about as verbally forthcoming as her mate and looked like she'd rather be anywhere else (any pub else) in the world. I just wanted it to be done so I could leave and never go back, so I began to explain to her how I wanted the new piercing to be slightly further away from my first lobe hole than is usual, because I tend to wear large stud earrings. This blew her tiny mind. She simply couldn't understand what I was on about, and after a while I decided she was just here to use the piercing gun and so I decided to let her get on with it.
I drew my own dot on again, and she (gloveless) rattled around with the piercing gun. She was about to pierce when I noticed it had a gold stud in it and I stopped her and asked it to be changed to a silver one as I had requested at the desk. She looked at me like I had kicked her dog. Eventually the piercing was done (again, not at the point I had drawn on) and she wandered off without a word.
So without being bid farewell or thanked I left (not without taking a look at the work unit behind the chair unfortunately nothing was left on it apart from the empty piercing gun). I felt angry and upset that I'd been handled carelessly by people who are supposed to be professionals. I had been keen to get the piercing done that day, and as I know what I'm doing with piercings I sort of felt well, it's a busy shop, in a busy area, it can't be all that scummy and didn't let my doubts deter me from getting pierced there. I wish I had waited.
Three days after the piercing, the second lobe stud was still hugely painful and swollen. It is not a complex piercing, and I knew something was wrong. I'd been cautious not to over-clean it, but had attempted a few saline washes. The stud was fixed really really tightly it was squeezing my ear tight, and the stud and back were digging deep into the flesh, making it hugely painful and hard to clean around. It was bruised and swollen, so tender to touch anywhere near and felt hot, so I figured it needed taking out. I took the stud out (it only had a butterfly back on it not proper piercing jewellery) and the ear bled for ages. After cleaning it, and the jewellery, very carefully, I attempted to put a (clean) labret stud I had had another second lobe piercing on the other ear done with, but the ear was too swollen and bruised, so I've ended up just letting it heal with nothing in there.
I thought about going back to Pagan to complain about how badly the second lobe piercing had been done probably as a result of the gun and the amateurs working there but seeing as they didn't take my name or signature, they'd probably deny read more
