Andrew Coggings, former owner of the Preston Park Tavern, which was a Sustainable Pub of the year winner, is very much heading that way with his new gourmet burger restaurant. Attention to detail is important here, as is the comfortable decor and a friendly and welcoming environment. The tables are made with recycled wood, there are bare brick walls, and beautiful photography of iconic characters around Brighton throughout the restaurant. There is a lovely little sun trap courtyard out the back for the warmer summer months, although some evenings they have to shut early due to close by neighbours. As soon as you walk in you are greeted by friendly staff, and seated with in house filtered water. The menu consists of burgers, with a couple of salads and sides to accompany them, and there are always a couple of specials on the blackboards, usually one meat, one vegetarian. All of the burgers are available to be gluten free, and they have wonderful gluten free buns from Sussex Bread Company, that hold up to the fillings really well, but more about that soon. As I have been here many of times, I have developed a favourite, which is the 6oz beef with mustard rarebit and mushroom tapanade. The rarebit comes oozing down the side of the burger, and the mushroom tapanade is delicious and goes so well with the beef. The beef has always comes rare, so do ask if you would like it cooked a little more. As I cannot eat wheat, I always order the gluten free bun, and it is soft and springy, not too dense, but dense enough to not fall apart in your hands and can soak up the sauce and juice within. The burgers are served on wooden boards, and come with the most delicious salad leaves I have ever eaten, and a side of triple cooked chips which you can either have cooked in vegetable oil, or beef dripping. The beef dripping chips have always been my choice, and are crunchy and thick with amazing flavour. My partner usually orders the chicken burger, with crispy bacon, avocado and salad and loves it every time. The Chicken breast is always moist and succulent, and the avocado is very tasty. I haven't been with anyone that has ordered the vegetarian burgers, so would love to hear someone else's feedback, as they do all sound great! The drinks are all local too, except the wine is from all over the world. The Sauvignon Blanc is particularly delicious. Definitely pop by to Coggings and Co when you can, the burgers are slightly more than your usual place, but they do come with chips and it's totally worth it! Great for kids too, their kid's selection is a good deal, very creative and thoughtful.

The weather was a bit cold and wintery and the solid carbohydate base of pasta, meaty sausage and bacon covered but not swampedin a cheesy sauce was a great antidote to the chill outside. I did struggle to pick up the advertised lemon zest but I don't think it was ever going to stand much of a chance against the other ingredients I was also very impressed that my server sorted me out a small (and cheap!) side order of deep fried courgette as I wanted to try it but didn't want the £4.25 starter portion size. It's nice to see when restaurants are flexible for their customers. Drinks order taken swiftly. I wish I had known my only option was a giant bottle of sparkling water, would have been nice to have been told initially. Menu: expansive, typical of Italian cuisine. A little on the expensive side. The fish specials looked delicious but unfortunately the waiter could not confirm where the fish came from; I am currently on a sustainability kick and have decided only to eat fish if I can verify how and where it was caught, so I opted instead for a chicken dish. Main: oh how my hopes were raised upon the first mouthful of my dinner, but sadly the delightful flavour of the creamy mushroom and dolcelatte sauce was not to be continued throughout the rest of my meal. I'm saddened to report dry chicken and floppy veg, I can almost forgive the slightly overdone chicken (as it seems to be the done thing in restaurants at the moment) but I most certainly cannot forgive limp broccoli. The inventors of the concept of al dente should know better! Points for utterly impeccable potatoes however, dauphinois I believe. Feeling a bit disappointed after the main, I decided to go whole hog and get a dessert... Menu: very disappointing. Unfortunately, although the flavour was pleasant enough I could never recommend this dessert at the price the restaurant is asking. Which leads me to my conclusion: I could easily have given one or two extra stars on my review tonight if the menu had not been as expensive as it was. For a few pounds less on everything, this would have easily got 3 or 4 stars. Value for money this ain't, but if you're looking for a restaurant that isn't a chain in the marina, you could do worse than coming here. Oh and one final point, the waiter hacking away in the distance is slightly disconcerting. I know illness can't be helped, but take those coughs into the bathroom or something!

Being quite full, but unable to resist the dessert menu entirely, we decided to share a banoffee pie which was yummy, as banoffee pie always is! On previous occasions I have had a number of their pasta, risotto and salad dishes, all of which I have been happy with. The Italian waiters are typically Italian, in that they can flirt like no other nation! Its so cliched but I fall for it every time and turn into a giggling school girl! What is it about the Italian accent that makes men instantly more attractive??
