On this cold and snowing January day, I'm reminiscing about the beautiful autumn day I spent at Paint Creek Trail. I love this part of metro Detroit. It's still sparsely populated, quiet, and there are miles upon miles of trails that are perfect for walkers, runners, and bicyclists. Paint Creek Trail is 8.9 miles long. I have taken walks along this trail starting at Rochester Municipal Park as well as five miles further north at Oakland Township Parks and Recreation which also houses the Paint Creek Cider Mill. The trail is so scenic and it's a great space for quiet contemplation and to admire nature. I'm looking forward to returning to Paint Creek Trail in the springtime.

We have been on this trail several times. Sometimes for races. Sometimes to run. Sometimes to walk. Today we were here to cheer on a friend who was running a Marine Corps Marathon. Virtually!! It's hard enough to run a virtual 5K. So running a full 26.2 without the support of fans cheering you on? Very difficult! So our friend's girlfriend set up a surprise and we were all on different mile markers cheering him on. We were set at the 25 mile marker. We got there early and had to sit and wait several hours. Than God for good company. It was so cold! But we cheered him on and went and grabbed some beers after! We were so happy to be able to help!

The trails here are beautiful! They can get pretty busy, although people are very respectful of personal space. There's always tons of people walking - bonus, many have cute dogs to say hi to! - running, taking photos, and just having a great time in nature. It's been a really great thing to do on the weekends during all this pandemic business; it gets me out, gets the dog out, and it's nice to see some friendly faces, even if they are just saying "good afternoon" and "on your left"

This trail is beautiful! I came here to run, parked in Rochester park. It has a playground and nice area to walk. But the trail itself gorgeous. I didn't feel tired because I was running and looking at all the nature, colors, and beauty. Deers came to me to say hi. People are walking, running, biking, taking pictures. If you need a long run - here it is. I loved this trail and will come back for a run or with my family to enjoy nature.

This trail is very walking, biking, and pet friendly! The locals exchange hellos while passing in the opposite direction-- expect to say hello 20 times more or less depending on how long you stay on the path. We never walked the entire way but the map indicates it goes straight into town (how cool!!) I expect the weekends are packed, so if you're bringing a dog who gets skittish around bikers and such, try a mid week early morning walk. It starts getting busier around 11 am and onwards. There are a few stops along the way, down a set of stairs for your dog to play on the river's water. My dogs had all the fun getting their paws wet and splashing around in the shallow waters. It's a great mid-walk break to cool them down. They do allow for fishing so please be careful to look for hooks and trash in case those before you are not responsible. But to be honest, I haven't seen an issue with that.

Fantastic park! It was very well manicured and looked after. The area for the ducks was great! The kids had a lot of fun at the playground section, and the paved paths made for a good walk, not to mention the actual trail. The free parking lot felt safe being right next to the police station.

Beautiful trail for biking, walking, running, or horseback riding. It goes from LO to Rochester. Very beautiful ponds and feilds and the creek itself is a great place to be. Even in the winter it has its own charm. There are some spots that people hang out on the trail that are likely to be safe, but if you are really a safety type person stay on the trail and bring a friend.

Ask the Community - Paint Creek Trail

Could you go swimming in the lake?

Not deep enough for a swim but I've taken a hop in there after a long bike ride! It's popular for kids to ride down sections of it in inner tubes too.

We biked starting from the Rochester Municipal building (there was ample parking from this location) to the Paint Creek cider mill 4 miles down the trail.

Where we parked there was a path to get to the falls. They are not really falls, just a man made dam with concrete steps on several levels to check out the water. I could see people were able to have canoes on the lake and there was a beach and playground off to the distance on the other side. Another part of the park maybe? A lot of people were walking around with their kids or come go fishing. So it was a nice family area. I realize I am more of a resort pool with a lazy river girly, so I am not in love with the many swarms of gnats but that is me. If you are outdoorsy, this is a nice place to visit. Paired with Huckleberry railroad would be perfect.

There is also a nice pond and water feature to walk around, and nature trails in the back. They have some fun lawn games to play near the pond too. One trail has a bridge that connects all the way to the green space on the other side of the Clinton River. My personal favorite is the pond with turtles that you can find lounging on logs on sunny days. There's even a kayak launch and other access points into the Clinton River. Tons of wildlife to view - we've seen plenty of deer, chipmunks, squirrels, turtles and cool birds. There is on-site paid parking (and free overflow across the street) but otherwise the park is free, which is really nice. I always see workers riding around in a golf cart emptying trash, making sure the park is clean. They even have bathrooms and a kona ice truck that I've seen on weekends. What more could you want?

In an area that features many great playgrounds and parks to take your family to, Innovation Hills has always stood out. There is a lack of options for younger children though (no infant swings?). The three stars? One of the new features of this park is the addition of Park Mobile being introduced for the main parking lot. Signs everywhere reminding you that you better have paid your $1.50 an hour! There is of course a free dirt lot across the busy road for your convenience. Or a parking 'annual pass' you can purchase from the Rochester Hills website. Our society struggles with the concept of 'the third place'. Parks and playgrounds are a haven for families and a community builder outside of work and home. What in the world is the motivation behind suddenly charging for parking? 1 - The City of Rochester Hills wants to prioritize park access for its citizens? Charging for parking doesn't keep out non-residents and in fact just causes Rochester Hills citizens to pay more for something they are already paying for. 2 - The park is often extremely crowded so charging for parking may reduce visitor count? If this was the motivation I am confident this strategy is not working. 3 - We want to encourage more families to park in the dirt lot across the street and attempt to cross a highway? I have more faith in humanity than that. Oh, I think I got it! To quote Tim Robinson's sketch 'The Driving Crooner' - "I gotta figure out how to make money on this thing..it's simply TOO GOOD!"

It's also great that it's located next to downtown Rochester, so food and drink after a casual stroll is accessible. I highly recommend Bloomer Park for hiking and biking activities.

The paths we followed were simple and good for families, although I would not recommend dragging a wagon or anything like that with you. There were easy to hike sections, as well as smaller, more off-road trails perfect for those that enjoy mountain biking. There was plenty of wildlife around to view, wooden bridges for crossing streams and marshy areas, and beautiful areas to relax near the Clinton River. It was honestly a great outing, and we'll definitely be back.

A heavily wooded, overgrown plot of land I'd driven by a couple times and vaguely noticed as some sort of nature park, I then saw Wilcox-Warnes reviewed right here on Yelp and made it a point to turn into its little blink-and-you-miss-it lot. I was kind of up that way for my cousin's graduation party anyway. I had to duck under some low hanging branches, likely from a tree felled in one of the intense storms we've had here in Michigan this summer. The planks which alternated with plain ol dirt for the trail came in handy but in a few places the path was very nearly lost in foliage. But with no machete I still managed to make my way through. It really was like a whole little other world as soon as I crossed that first trail blockage. The trails here aren't the longest but I wasn't really expecting them to be either. I got in a nice little hike right before the sunset with the only other nature goers leaving just as I set off. These woods seem like they'd be loaded with mosquitoes but i just roll with a bottle of Off! in my glove compartment these days so I emerged from my trail walk bite free. There's a little bridge in one place but what looked to be a creek bed was nothing but mud. Odd since we've gotten loads of rain recently in southeast Michigan. Someone build a dam near here or something? The laminated sign reading TRAIL ENDS was also odd in a way that was both hilarious and disappointing. There's room here to just have a trail that loops around instead of just abruptly ceasing so you have to double back but whatever I guess. There's one nice little meadow but other than that Wilcox-Warnes is heavily wooded. And you can hear noise from the road in places but it is a nice little respite from outer suburbia. Truthfully, it's nothing too special and I wouldn't go too far out of my way for this nature reserve with the superior options listed at the beginning of the review but Wilcox-Warnes does offer something pretty rustic if basic. I thought about three stars, but given that this land could easily be eaten up by brown and beige McMansions, condos, strip malls or other insidious, encroaching developments, I'll give WW a four.
