**During the pandemic** Let's start off by saying YES THERES A GUN RANGE near the park which it's affiliated with but besides that part it's still a beautiful place to hike. Today was my first time at this location I actually didn't know this place existed until a group of hiking ladies suggested the spot. Please note there are several places to park but the first parking interest is limited to about 15 cars, So if it's full you have to go down the road and you'll see some spaces available. Luckily I only hiked in the winter time here and everything look beautiful - we did not find any trash along the trail and I believe there's only one porta potty available. You have bikers runners and hikers throughout the trail so please be mindful. It's very hilly which give people a challenge and there's also several trails; each trail is 3.5 miles I do believe. I shall return here again to do more exploring. Happy trailing

Just an update on the road situation. The state invested in repaving the entire park in the summer of 2020. It makes a huge difference to bikers, walkers, and drivers alike! Maybe a better playground is in the works?

It's a park/recreation area. How does Mother Nature not get 5 Stars?! Located right off Lapeer Rd. a short drive from I75, it's easy to find and get to. They offer everything you would think a park would except there's no camping here. But definitely pack a cooler with snacks, drinks and food to cook on the charcoal grills because you can make a day of this place if you want to. There's nature trails for hiking and exploring. A full disc corse for disc golf. Sandy beach with plenty of picnic tables and grills for you to cook out (bring your own charcoal). There a ton of grassy areas to lay picnic blankets on too. The lake to swim in is clean and sandy, not rocky to hurt your feet on. They have port-a-johns and regular bathrooms with showers. But they were build circa 1970 and kinda creepy, LOL. They have a concession stand but only sell a handful of items that are super over priced. Again, pack a cooler with snacks and drinks and save yourself for being price gouged. Bald Mt. Recreation is the home of the Water Warrior Island!!! And this is a MUST!! It's a floating island of inflatables on the lake! How awesome is that! Check out my review for Water Warrior Island to get all the info on it. Entrance fee to get into Bald Mt. is $10 per day, unless you have a annual recreation pass, which I do. I pay $28 for the year and it allows me access into all the state and county parks. It's definitely worth it if you visit parks a lot like we do. Bald Mt. is a super great place to spend a summer day. Lots to do and well kept. This place will be in our regular rotation of summer fun!

Came because I had never seen a bald mountain before. Turns out there's not even a mountain, let alone a bald one. What a scam.

Now, maybe I should lower the amount of stars because I am remembering what I do NOT like about it- the horrible trail sign system.

We walked about a mile and a half into downtown Rochester Hills, passing by a police horse, a family of seven deer, and many bikers, runners, and walkers like us along the way. The path was clean, the nature was beautiful, and everyone we passed was just as happy to be enjoying this trail as we were. It's just as magical today as it was then. This trail is, in short, an absolute gem. If there was a list for best casual walking trails near a downtown in the US, this would top it. We've easily put thousands of miles of walking into that trail--which has its unique history of its own as a former railroad line. Through every season, from rain to sun to snow, we've been blessed to watch its beautiful trees and flora evolve throughout the years. The best part, however, is that everyone respects the beauty of it. There are trash cans spread out, but you'll never find a candy wrapper or doggy bag left in a stray bush. Bikers make themselves well heard before safely passing around a group of idle walkers. It's rare to hear runners blaring loud music, and I swear children are visibly calmer when walking through Dinosaur Hill with their parents. I genuinely believe every city in America's overall happiness levels would skyrocket if they had a trail like this. But that's what makes the Paint Creek Trail special--it's uniquely one of a kind in its simplicity and beauty.

On my inaugural trip I biked the buttery smooth cycling trail taking a loop through beautiful woods, a circuit just long enough for some scenery and exercise but without any what-did-I-get-myself-into exhaustion. They have an absolutely lovely bike trail out here in White Lake, one that I'd judge to be second best in the 13 park Huron-Clinton Metropark chain, trailing only the magnificent Kensington which makes a full circuit of Kent Lake. I was a bit bummed on my maiden voyage here that I couldn't make my way into the Discovery Center as it was booked for a wedding that day. I really wanted to see the pond dome, a basement aquarium that's just a big observation bubble beneath the surface of a pond. Them's the breaks; they gotta pay the bills and it did sound like an intriguing place to get hitched. Last week I made the drive back out here to get my pond doming in. It was really cool, but also slightly underwhelming. Not a whole lot of fish or much variety of fish and no frogs or other reptiles to be found. The dome was pretty sludgy in places but I could still see over 20 feet into the pond as demonstrated by a series of targets with labels showing how far away they were. Other reviewers have complained about not being able to see far which makes me wonder how often it's cleaned. It's really gotta be a serious pain to keep this dome free of algae and pond scum and what not. At any rate it was in reasonable shape on the day I went. And I wonder if the time of year figures into how few fish I saw. Maybe I'm spoiled by aquariums that stock aquatic life rather than this honest to goodness look into actual nature. Like I said it is really cool but it also didn't quite live up to the initial thrill and jolt of wonder I got from first walking into it. I didn't see a whole lot else in the Discovery Center either but the taxidermied wolf near the entrance is something else! I also walked a shorter nature trail on my second visit here. It was a loop around a hill with tall grass. There was another pond to look at but really the views weren't that great. I also wasn't far from the park's main access road - not do naturey. I posted one pic on Instagram of the overcast gray October sky above the tall swaying grass that I thought looked like could have been the moody inspiration for a Van Gogh painting and it only got four likes. So I don't think the trails that navigate fields here are so great. The longer hiking trails that wind back through the woods look a lot more appealing. Perhaps if I manage a third trip out this way I can tackle one of those. All in all, this is a fine Metropark but doesn't have nearly the amount of attractions as some of the other larger parks in the chain. Maybe cause it's out in the boonies. There's a kids splash pad but no place where I as an adult would feel comfortable cooling off with some water. There's golf but no disc golf for us frisbee throwers. All my grousing about this and that on here is mostly nitpicking. This is a good park and I'd probably have it at five stars if I lived nearby. But I don't so four stars it is.
