I went with my sister for the first time, and they had SO many choices and colors, the employees are nice, however instructions could be a bit more specific. Service was disappointing. The staff asked our little girls to bring their paint plates back to the sink, even though they had already washed them earlier. I brought my daughter here for her birthday, but the whole experience felt rushed and impersonal -- more like "pay, paint, and leave." She had her heart set on painting a unicorn, and when we asked, we were told there were none left. I ended up finding three more in the other room myself. This was such a cute spot for doing pottery painting! The store is located off the river in historic Occoquan. It looked like they had two rooms, the main pottery room and a party room. We visited on a Sunday afternoon, and it was packed. I would recommend making a reservation for weekend visits. They had so many options for what you could paint. I picked a donut shaped container while my friend chose a mug. The prices vary depending on what item you choose to paint. My total ended up being about $30. They also have a large selection of glazes in all the colors, plus they even had sparkly glazes. They have staff available to tell you the process and answer questions. We ended up spending almost 2 hours painting our pottery. Once you finish your painting, they will fire it and you can pick it up after a week. read more

For years we've thought about checking this place out. So this chilly day we decided to take advantage of winter break and paint some ornaments! They had a large variety of items to paint. You pay for the item you want to paint and you can use as many paints as you need. The ladies here were super friendly and helpful and genuinely seemed like they enjoy their jobs (unlike other pottery painting places in the area -- just look at how the others respond to bad reviews). The prices were in my opinion not bad at all, for some ornaments we paid about $15-$18 each and for the larger items it was on average $30 at least the items I have my eye on. Even cooler we could have our items before Christmas! They also have mosaic art where you safely break your own tiles/glass? We had little ones with us so definitely not something we would do with them, but I could see this being a really cool activity for teens or people just getting together to be crafty! My daughter and I have been to Paint Your Heart Out twice over the past month or so. Once, for paint your own pottery, the other time to do mosaic. They take reservations, and can get busy, but the folks there couldn't be nicer! Everyone is so friendly and helpful. The place is super clean and well organized. The staff was really nice because they printed a silhouette and provided some carbon paper to trace on for my little first grader. Cute location, but the music was a little loud, which was distracting. I was too scared to ask them to turn it down a few notches. I would like to say how happy i was with the outcome in today. I called in about a month ago for my daughters 9th birthday and today was her birthday party. The room was very spacious and very well decorated. The staff was very nice as well. My daughter and her friends were very happy. The only thing is that you do have to provide your own food. Let me start by saying I really wanted to give this place a 5 star! This will be a long, rant-y review. My sister and I went in a couple weeks ago and really had a great time. The shop is cute, it's in a nice location, the employees were lovely. The paint selection was great, plenty of brushes and stencils. We wanted to sketch our ideas first, and the employees were quick to give us paper and pencils. We stayed for probably 3 or 4 hours and really enjoyed ourselves. There was almost nothing wrong, and I would have given 5 stars at the time, for sure! Now the problem came when we picked up the finished pieces the next week. My piece was smudged! I know for sure that it wasn't something that I did, because I spent HOURS on the piece! I had made a mistake at one point and knew to rub it off with a wet sponge, so I know that if I had seen a smudge at the time, I would have done the same again to fix it. It was definitely something that happened after I left. Also, I have the picture I took when I was done painting, right before I left the shop, and there's NO smudge! Now if you're going with your young kids and they plan to finger paint, be messy, or you just know that it won't be intricate enough for you to notice a smudge, maybe you don't have to worry about this. But im really disappointed because my piece is ruined, in my eyes. Onto my sister's piece. Her plate came out with a weird bumpy texture. Maybe it's air bubbles, or something that happens naturally... or maybe it's something that the workers messed up. I honestly don't know. To me it looks like some sort of dust, which makes me think the workers aren't very careful. You can see in the picture that it is really... unflattering. A couple minor cons: -The pottery selection wasn't the best. I went in thinking I'd do a plain mug, because any shop is bound to have a plain mug. But there weren't any. I ended up choosing the little round cup. -The cup no longer sits flat on the table because there are bumps on the bottom from the prongs that held them up in the kiln. The cup wobbles! -There is no separate party room, so if there's a party of kids, you won't be able to escape their yelling and running around. read more

This place is a slice of creative heaven on earth. It is on the second floor of a building right by the water. There was plenty of street parking when we arrived. When we walked in- we were welcomed like family. They really just gave us the run down and let us go! You can stay and paint as long as you would like. They do have a bathroom in the facility. The place was clean, light and airy. What a treasure find! We painted 3 plates and a piggy bank. All in all, we definitely loved this little find. Came here on Sunday after looking for somewhere to paint some pottery for me and my husbands anniversary. We came across this place and drove all the way from Fredericksburg to come paint. When walking in the studio is adorable. Extremely clean and inviting. Would be perfect for birthday parties or some family time. We both picked out a piece each to paint. They really don't have a huge selection to pick from but they do have some cute pieces. Some kinda pricey. They have plenty of paints to choose from. I found that the color swatches didn't really match the paints. Unless you painted a lot of coats. The staff was very friendly and helpful throughout our visit. Came here with 2 friends on a Saturday afternoon. Occoquan has some street parking, but there are plenty of spaces in the lots at the beginning of Mill St. I lucked out as I had scored a spot in front of Madigan's (where we ate lunch before coming here to paint) next door. If you've been to a paint-your-own-pottery place before, you know the drill - pick a piece of pottery, grab your paints and get going. We had to wait about 10 minutes for a table to become available, but you take that chance when you show up midway through a Saturday. One of my friends brought a bottle of wine that we were allowed to open and drink while painting, so bonus for that. I only felt awkward for a minute that we were surrounded by kids while we poured the vino. My pottery should be ready this weekend for pickup. read more

I was disappointed with my experience. After brief instructions we were left on our own for the rest of our time while the manager painted her own piece. The paint brushes were full of paint and warped; when I asked about better brushes I was told I could rinse them out (which did not help). I had to find someone to pay. When I left I expressed my disappointment (especially considering how much I paid) and I was told my complaint would be taken into consideration. When I called shortly after to speak with the owner, I was told "you get out of life what you put into it".... she also mentioned they have enough business... so I guess mine wasn't that important. Cute little shop wanted to really love this place but from the moment we came in there was no one at the counter my family and another waited at the counter for about 10 minutes just to be told by another customer that we just needed to select our pottery and have a seat. I have done paint your own pottery before, so I wasn't new to the concept. This place is cute but had a very sparce selection, it took me a long time to find something. The music was louder than other places I have been to. The brushes were ruined, color selection was also less than desirable. But my experience only gets better! The employee was working on other pieces right behind us, grinding drill, constant scraping, clanking, noisy paper and to put a bow on it all she set up shop right next to us. So I got see everyone's orders being packed up. Needless to say I will not be back. This place also seems to really cater to kids, so if your looking for a plain mug, a decent brush and a relaxing experience you need to go some place else. read more

One of the managers there was no help in the slightest. I paid to schedule a Paint on Pottery and it was one of my first times painting and I was excited. It was my first time, so I feel like I deserve the right to ask for help, but every time I asked, I hear her scuff. Like if I'm supposed to be Picasso the moment I walk in. I chose this place, because I wanted to take my 6 year old grand daughter for a special outing. We arrived as soon as the shop opened at 11AM and looked around. Then we chose our pottery to paint. There was a nice selection of things to pick from, and there were lots of paint colors. The shop is very nice and clean, and has good lighting. My complaint is that the people who work there spent less than a minute with us, explaining where we got paints and how. Then we were left alone the whole time, and no one spoke to us again. No checking in to see if anything was needed, or if we had any questions. They were busily talking with other people, and ignoring customers. As I prepared to pay, the woman at the front desk was again busy talking to someone randomly, and rudely ignored me for several minutes while she just kept talking, and the lady she was talking to finally said, "I'll come back later and we can talk, I'll be here. Looks like you have a customer." It took another person to remind her that she was supposed to be working there and waiting on customers. It was so very rude, and quite intentional on her part. The project was rather expensive for the two of us at $58, but I wouldn't have minded if it had been more of a fun place. The people who work there definitely don't try and make it fun, they are too busy gossiping. It's a shame. My grand daughter was the youngest person in there, and you would have thought they might actually try and appeal to children! read more

We've been coming here for years. It's always clean, the staff is kind and caring, and they have a great selection of glazes, puff paint, and items to work on. The items are a little pricey, but you get what you pay for, considering working on a piece can take a while and supplies. Thanks for giving us something to do and something to take home a treasure. My daughter and I have had so many perfect "Girls' Days" to Paint Your Heart Out. Yes, the experience can be expensive but it gives you a real reason to get out of the house and be creative. The staff is so friendly and helpful and the decor makes you WANT to be creative. They always have music playing that soothes me and awakens my inner painter. My daughter and I take turns complementing each others' work and it is always exciting to go back a week later and collect the finished pieces. My husband takes both our kids here often as they love making me gifts for all occasions. However, the last artistic venture, my son paint a soap dispenser. I treasure it but the pump doesn't work, very cheaply made. The owner has given me a new one, it doesn't work either. I don't live in Occoquan so I just can't pop in whenever to get a working pump. In a nutshell, I have a $30 original with no pump. The pottery place in Manassas, VA has better quality parts and now we go there. read more

I love this place! I have been several times over the past few years and it is always a treat. The owner and employees are so helpful and friendly and willing to offer advice if asked for creative ideas. The atmosphere is so welcoming and the music is fun. Compared to some other places the prices are a bit cheaper and the paint is included in the price unlike some other places I have been to. When I need a special personal gift this is where I come. In the last year I have made an anniversary gift, a baby gift, something for my husband, and 3 things for my office, as well as a clock. When I cant find something I am looking for in my decor I make it at Paint Your Heart Out. The creative time is wonderfully therapeutic too. read more
