In the days leading up to our reservation, we received text reminders telling us to arrive at 2:45 PM. When we arrived at 2:45, we were greeted by a Caucasian man who I assumed was the manager. He told us it would be a few minutes because they were waiting for a staff member to arrive. Okay... we placed our belongings in a locker and waited. Once another employee arrived, we were then informed that they were short-staffed and did not actually have availability for our reservation. We were told we would need to wait until someone else came in to assist us because they were understaffed. Huh??? First of all, how is that our problem? We had a confirmed reservation, and NOBODY contacted us beforehand to let us know there was an issue. Honestly, it didn't even seem like anyone knew we had a reservation at all, and the employee helping us looked confused. We ended up leaving and requesting a refund, which was extremely disappointing because my family was really looking forward to this activity. There was no accountability taken, nor did the manager seem at all concerned that no one was available to assist us. He was avoidant and dismissive, leaving the employee to handle the situation instead of trying to accommodate us or offer a solution. Unfortunately, since this was our first impression of this business, it will also be our last. Very unprofessional and I would not recommend this place to anyone.

It was trippy with the black lights and projections on the wall of various etherial scenes. We all dressed up in the protective suit, googles and boots. The kids were a little small for the suits, but they managed to make it work! Once inside, you can throw paint all over, stomp on the artwork with your feet (a personal favorite of my kids), and twist the painting around to have the colors spread in all directions. We were joined by a staffer the entire time who took a few pictures along with a cute video. I recommend having the staffer snap photos with your own iPhone as mine came out a little better. But I did enjoy the video. At the end of the experience, they pack up the painting in gigantic pizza boxes. The paint is expected to dry in 24-48 hours, though ours took a much longer. I recommend putting the paintings outside on a dry day in the sun to help move that along. Granted ours had a lot of paint on it, but even after 48 hours it was super wet. This is a blast. And it's located in a classic 1990s mall. The kids LOVED this mall, complete with a Spencers gift store, bowling alley and reptile interactive experience. In fact, we'll probably come back here again once the winter sets in since there are so many things here to do with kids inside.

There was also so many items to pick from and you could also create your own pottery as well, they had classes for that. We hadn't seen each other in almost a year, so it was the perfect excuse to catch up while doing something creative. The event was simple and fun. We picked our magnets, selected our paint colors, grabbed some pastries, and spent the next couple of hours painting and chatting. It was such a relaxing way to spend a Sunday morning. Stefani was fantastic, friendly, welcoming, and happy to answer questions. The entire space felt warm and inviting, even for complete beginners. I love that they also offer beginner pottery classes, which I'm already adding to my list for a future visit. It's great to see a pottery studio opening in the area, and I'm excited to support a local business that's bringing creative experiences to the community.

So we approached the front entrance with trepidation, not knowing what to expect when we stepped inside. But sure enough, just inside the front entrance was the custard counter. We arrived on a late Friday afternoon, walking over from The Sandwich Shop a few blocks down Church (same side of the street and walking right past Rita's (!!)) after having a late sammie lunch (also our first time at The Sandwich Shop - read my review). We had spotted Kiln & Custard as we drove past it to get to the sandwich place and made a mental note to save room to try their custard as a cap-off to lunch. What a great location! Walkable anywhere from old town Vienna and the downtown area (nothing is really that far), tucked away one block off busy Maple Ave, surprisingly lots of great FREE street parking (on Church) but also right there in their small shopping center parking lot so it's truly not a pain-in-the-butt to head over and not have to stress about where to park. The guy serving the custard was also tending to customers doing pottery painting (not many when we arrived) - dunno how service is if you just come in for the custard and the place is packed (we saw that pottery customers had to ask the guy each time they wanted more paint which he portioned out for them...vs customers self-serving their own paint and colors in other paint-your-own places we've been to - with a single worker, I can imagine that could be a bottleneck problem if the pottery side is busy AND there's a line of custard customers waiting to be served). The frozen custard is DEEEEELICIOUS. You can definitely see as it's being scooped AND TASTE that it's housemade. SOOOOO GOOOD. Very creamy, soft, pliable, rich custard flavor and not too sweet. They offer 12 flavors - see my pics of the 2 display cases of custards. PRICES IMO ARE VERY REASONABLE. $2.85 for a kid's size, GENEROUS HEAVY HANDED PORTIONS (and who doesn't love THAT in this economy?!).
