I've visited this place several times and regularly shop at a few of the stores here. Every time I've made a purchase, the cashiers have been very clear about the return policy -- items must be returned within 2 days, and anything marked final sale cannot be returned. I appreciate that they consistently explain the policy so customers know the rules upfront. This past weekend, I went shopping with my mom on Saturday. On Sunday she asked me to return a pair of earrings because the closure wasn't secure. I went back to the store with the item and the receipt about 15 minutes before closing. When I brought the item to the counter, the interaction started with some not-so-inviting remarks. I asked the associate helping me if there was an issue returning jewelry, and she said there wasn't but that she needed to check the receipt because of the strict policy. Before she even looked at my receipt, another employee with reddish hair stepped in and said they had to be careful because people "try to get over all the time." At that point, my receipt still hadn't even been reviewed. I firmly explained that my mom had asked me at the last minute to return the item and that I really didn't want to come back out, but because of their policy she wanted to make sure it was returned within the timeframe. The other employee responded sarcastically, saying, "Well, your mom is right." The associate who was originally helping me then completed the return without any issue. Afterward, I quickly checked out at one shop and headed out since the stores were closing. As I walked toward the door, I could hear the same employee loudly expressing her frustrations, and when she noticed me she immediately stopped and turned away. I completely understand why a business like this needs to have a strict return policy, and I respect that. However, the commentary and assumptions made during the process were unnecessary. A simple, professional interaction would have made the experience much more pleasant. read more

Painted Tree Boutique is, by far, one of the coolest shops I've been to in VB. While I was out shopping for my daughter's birthday, I saw a few people walking into the store and was very curious to see if I could find a cute gift for her inside. I was blown away with what I had walked in to, I'd like to think of it as an upscale flea market. The store included specialized gifts, decor, jewelry, clothes, home goods, paintings, record albums, snacks, candles, plants, art...all under one roof. You name it, they have it. After walking around for over an hour looking at each vendor, I decided to buy my daughter a pair of socks (they have an abundance of awesome socks) and fun snacks. As I was checking out, the lady shared that they currently have over 270 vendors within the store and that they change often. There was also a "Ladies Night" event that week which included amazing sales, live music and gift card giveaways! All of the prices were fairly decent as well. If you are looking for a gift for someone or just want to buy something for yourself, Painted Tree is definitely the place to go!!! read more

I've had a consistently positive experience here. The staff has always been professional, patient, and genuinely willing to help--I've honestly never seen a team more willing to assist customers. The return policy was clearly a two-day return across vendors, and it was always communicated upfront. Some reviews read more like narratives than factual accounts--no quotes, no context, just interpretation presented as fact. I had seen ads for this boutique and had been wanting to come for some time so we decided to pop in on a random weekday. The place was pretty empty but upon entering there was so much to see! I absolutely loved all the handmade items, plants, decor, clothing. The store is huge with tons to see. We enjoyed being able to wander around without the pressure of having a store associate peer over our shoulders. Side note, we loved the little waterfall at the back of the store. So many booths that five of us girlfriends couldn't finish the store in one hour's time, okay maybe three of us couldn't do it but two did. The two who did weren't into shopping, horrors, but we three loved to browse, touch, sniff and think about what the items would mean for our family and friends or ourselves. Truly a pleasure shopping here because some booths were set up for baby clothes, others for costume jewelry, etc. Each booth was rented by a vendor and offered different kinds of items with prices set by the vendor who wasn't present. Fabulous variety of items from clothing to kitschy decor to handmade oyster shells decorated with novel designs meant for trees, jewelry holders, or guest soaps. My daughter and I did dorm shopping as we were looking for unusual and vintage items. Painted Tree fit the bill and so much more. Think of a place to shop with a hundred plus local owners under one roof and a variety of items. That's them in a nutshell. Is this the new evolution of a mall, hmmm. The flow is organized to shop with each business renting out their space and arranging how they like. If your thinking garage sale or flea market then think again. These shop owners have incredibly attractive displays and offer quality items for purchase. I did not see any owners, but it's unnecessary due to the system the offer for a central checkout. My understanding is on weekends some owners do man their areas to answer questions and drive sales. This is a 10 out of 10 unique for Hampton Roads. Wow! My boss just told me about what had been put here in the place of the old Steinmart. This is a huge space. It's kinda like Barrett Street Antique mall where there are a ton of vendors with a small space to show their goodies and you go to the central registers at the front to pay. I loved it. Soooo many cool things. Literally anything gift-related you could ever want is inside: Art Food Clothing Jewelry Hobby Seasonal Decor Paint Socks Children's goodies Pet items You get it. I found tons of things I wanted to see and walked around quickly bc I was being rushed by a grumpy husband. I know I didn't see everything and what is inside is constantly changing. Love this concept where people who maybe can't afford a storefront can showcase their art here. Wonderful addition to Hilltop. LOVE painted tree boutique. There are so many cool and fun booths in here. I would love to just spend my whole day browsing each and every one of them. I always come here to go to the ceremony booth so I can pickup all my alcohol free spirits. The last time we were here and were headed to checkout, we passed a booth with these awesome wooden pictures of Virginia Beach. We didn't get the picture that day, but we came back another day to buy it. The ladies at the front are always so helpful and friendly. Each booth has its own pricing, but once you find something you just take it up front and the ladies take care of you. They also have shopping carts, which I always forget about but would be very helpful especially if you plan on browsing the whole store. They have nice clean bathrooms too. Just ask the nice ladies and they will point you in the right direction. Definitely looking forward to many more trips here in the future. read more
