Great experience taking a Meditation Globe glass blowing class at the Glass Academy! Beautiful…read morespace, and fun to browse all the goods. The class itself was really fun, and was a great balance between being very hands on in crafting your own art piece while also being comfortably guided for safety and to make sure you make something that actually looks good so you'll enjoy what you take home. I would recommend to anyone looking for a unique experience or wanting to try a new art form! Only thing is that it's a fairly pricey experience, so might not plan on being a recurring activity.

This was my first glass blowing experience and I would happily go back to take more classes!…read more My mom told me she wanted to do a glass blowing class for Mother's Day so I planned ahead, researched a few options, and came across this recommended place! I was happy to see they have several different classes, including a Mother's Day heart making workshop--and don't worry, this is definitely for beginners and newbies! The whole class lasted about a little over an hour and it starts with a tour of the place and then leads into the actual glass blowing activity. The space is very cool by the way. You can see dozens of hand made pieces (and purchase them) and they just added a bar and lounge that will be accessible for events and reserving too! For the glass blowing portion, they have two workstations that can probably accommodate up to 4 guests each, and two glass blowing instructors so each group of up to 4 can have attention, and I thought this worked out well. They start the glass blowing portion with a demo and then allow you to get involved (with lots of guidance and assistance for very levels of comfort and handling). Our instructor was very friendly and super engaging, which I appreciated because I know my mom was a little nervous at times. If you're doing a class, do please take their recommendation seriously of bringing water because it will get hot when you're in the workstation! Overall, both my mom and I were very pleased with our Mother's Day hearts and even though they take time to cool, we were both happy when we got the call the next day that they were ready for pick up (you can also do delivery too). My mom and I had a wonderful experience here and we both plan to return for another holiday themed glass blowing class.

A couple weeks after I turned 17, I decided to forgo my senior year at Trenton High School, and…read moreinstead I spent my senior year in the US Navy avionics program learning how to become an electronics technician in the naval aviation field. After my four years up, I went straight to Henry Ford College and began studying Physics, Psychology, Philosophy and Music, eventually earning a degree in Liberal Arts. Because all of the teachers there are top notch and highly recruited by many other prestigious schools, HFC administrators do a fantastic job of curating these world-class level professors whom share a passion for their subject matter and for teaching that subject matter to everyone willing to learn. My all-time favorite teacher, from all of my years in public school, and my time in Naval schools and even my time at UofM AA included, was the incomparable Peter Putnam at HFC. Mr. Putnam normally taught any and every English class that he could, and likewise I took every single class that I could with Mr. Putnam, who had a massive impact on my life and I owe him a tremendous debt of gratitude. Had it not been for my phenomenal education at HFC, I would not have earned an academic scholarship to the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, which would further my education and expanded my sense of who I was and more importantly, who I could become. The common latin phrase: "Scientia potentia est" which means "Knowledge Is Power" is a maxim that I have witnessed proven in my life, myriad times, and HFC helped send me on that path and I will be forever indebted to institution and my specific teachers. Dr. Azar was a treasure as well, and he also altered the direction of my life, again, for tremendous benefit to me, and eventually for my children as well. There are many different teachers & professors there that I could espouse, yet HFC is the organization that recruits these special teachers and deserves credit for creating a phenomenal center for learning. I cannot overstate what a superlative institution HFC is. They were the driving factor that helped me earn an Academic scholarship at University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, and not only will I be forever grateful, but there were many classes at HFC that were superior to UofM. I bleed Maize & Blue, through & through, but HFC made that dream possible. While I was at HFC, I felt that I should give back somehow, and they quickly set me up with their Special Needs department and began giving me as many struggling students that they could and I learned that I love tutoring and that I am exceptional at doing it. Again, I have to thank HFC, for revealing my character. I simply cannot recommend HFC highly enough, anyone who is even remotely considering it, just sign up and begin your world class education. Knowledge is power

I went to this school in the early 80's. My experience was not good. I had a few very bad…read moreexperiences with the professors here. In one case I was taking an art class and apparently the teacher did not like the direction of my drawing, so instead of telling me what I should do, he took my paper and pencil away from me and started doing it himself. After another bad experience in another art class I basically quit and never really did art again after that, which is sad because I really enjoyed it. Then in psychology class that I took, I had a teacher who decided that instead of teaching us about psychology, he was going to teach us about the anatomy of the brain. We spent the entire class learning about the anatomy of the brain and then towards the end of the semester, he announced that instead of a final exam, there would be a class and if we showed up we passed and we didn't I guess we did not pass. Well on the last day of class the teacher did not show up. So I guess the school just did some kind of average of our previous test scores for that class. Then in a sociology class I had a teacher who kept insisting that he was going to politicize us. We also had an older senior classmate in this class which I personally found refreshing, but the teacher treated this classmate terribly and I felt really bad for him. Thankfully I think that schools have progressed beyond this and now treat older students much better than that. I'm sure this school has improved over the years, so I wouldn't necessarily consider my review to be very relevant for today, however, I'm adding it as a cautionary tale for people who may accept improper teaching methods and not question it or decide to find a better teacher or class. Also, I've been holding this in a long time and I still think about it from time to time and how my future could have been different if my experience had been better or if I found a better way to handle it. Sadly, the school counselors during this time period were not very helpful either.

Now, this Blick isn't two floors, in fact their one floor is only a fraction of that other store, but not every location can be that stacked. It's a smaller footprint but they pack a lot in. You don't usually get to see ceramic glazes and underglazes in arts & craft stores but they carry some which made me really happy as I was able to find a few of the underglazes I had been looking for. They also carry the Mayco brand (which no other ceramics specialty shops in the area I've been to carry) and I was able to find a few of their colors that I had had on my wish list. They have a ton of brushes, canvas, paints, pencils, solvents, etc, etc. All at various price points, so no matter what your background is, professional artist or novice, you can find something to either get you started or help you hone your craft. In addition to the art supplies they do have a small section of some miscellaneous gifty-type things which are also fun to browse (many of which would make great stocking stuffers). My last visit I got a keychain tape measure and I can't tell you how often I use that thing. Best couple of bucks I've ever spent! The other thing worth noting is that they do offer a "buy online pick up in the store" option which is great if you're in a hurry. If they don't have what you're looking for in shop they can find it for you in their online store. I've searched for some really random stuff over the years and I've always at least been able to find it on their website. Staff here is very nice and helpful. I love the mural on the wall outside, too. Fitting for such a great art store.

The Downtown Location is owned by the franchisees that own Ferndale and Farmington. Two women who have found a niche. I painted during the Grand Opening event this week. The set up is BYOB wine and they provide the paint and canvas. You would be surprised how great you will back with a little bit of wine. The golden rule is never drink the paint water and no paint brushes in the wine. If you've ever painted there then you will get the joke. The area is spacious and they have a TV monitor for you to follow along in case you need to see close up. At least 40 people can fit into a class. The class offerings are changed monthly and a sneak peek is given via Facebook on the 15th of the month. The instructors walk you through creating your on painting that is preselected. The cool thing is that many are artists themselves, so you are learning from a real painter. Parking is on the street, which is metered parking. Classes are $35-$45 for public and private classes. You can book a private party with your friends/family. I enjoy painting and you also get points when registering online.
