Not a single complaint. Instead of boasting about how much fun it was, I'm just going to answer a few questions that I had going into it/some insight. -BYOB / SNACKS are by venue only. I went to Local which is a bar/restaurant and so we paid ourselves. -Side Note, Local's food is really good, a lot of beer variety, and it was Wednesday Wine Night (buy a bottle, get a bottle)- -There is not a lot of room to eat because the easels are set up close to each other so I would recommend eating before/after -We got drinks before we started and they had a server going around during so that you didn't have to make people move for you (we also took a break during to get more drinks/walk around to see others work and meet new people) -GROUPON had an amazing deals. It was basically half off. -Just bring yourself (paint/brushes/water/paper towel/smock/easel are set up before you arrive) -I recommend getting there 10 min. early to get settled. There was no designated seats for this one and due to the Polar Vortex, no one obviously wanted to sit away from the heater or near the windows. (especially if you're in a bigger group) -You are painting without an outline - completely free hand. The instructor is there to give inspiration/answer questions/paint with you/have fun. -You can paint whatever you want - the "theme" is just kind of a guide/something to make it more of an event. -Went from 7-9. There was no rush to leave. We left our paintings and had a drink after at the bar to let our paint dry. -It's just fun. No pressure/judgment. -Some people were solo/some in groups/some just pairs. All accepted. We went on 1/29 at Local. S/O the "That Paint Lady" ... she was great. Super funny, encouraged drinking and really owned the room.

Everything was well organized, down to the apron, the paints, and all is setup for you in advance. 2. The host has a PA system, so everyone can hear well. 3. The host was very positive, encouraging everyone to be creative and have fun. 4. The painting was broken down into methodical steps so everyone succeeded. 5. It's a great way to meet new people and to socialize with your friends. 6. It's FUN! There are different instructors and venues. I went to Getaway Cafe and the staff there was very welcoming and the food was good. Our instructor had a degree in Art, and she took the time to explain how to complete the painting in easy steps. Nobody at Paint Nite paid full price, they all got their tickets through Groupon. Not sure how long Groupon will sell the half price tickets, but if you use the code PITTSBURGH you can bypass the Groupon website.

I went to see it the next day in person and was absolutely blown away by how beautiful the space was - the art was so unique and stunning! Working with them to plan the event was seamless and the pricing was great. The event happened last weekend and everything went off without a hitch. Truly couldn't be happier with the service and would absolutely hold another event there. Am hoping to make it back for some of their art shows too, or some of the other things events they host there for the community.

It had been a cloudy blustery day in the grand Steel city. A day intended for hot toddy's, horror…read moremovies, and "grown up" cider. That can only mean as the sun sunk low beyond the horizon it was time to choose a haunted house. Pittsburgh is not lacking for choices when it comes to ways to scare yourself at night. (I'm not even talking about the parade of horrors on the Southside or the underage drunk college kids screaming in Oakland.) In all the options my group of four decided to try a haunted house that was brand new. I realize that this can mean a subpar haunt, but I'm willing to chance it. Parking in the Strip District on the weekend is still dicey, (I don't know why I thought that dropped off in the 90's, maybe because I haven't hung out down there since the 90's.) but even with a larger vehicle we found a spot. There is absolutely no line outside, like with other haunted houses. Just a sandwich board type sign, an attendant, and a police officer (which was a surprise). The attendant instructed us in a very non-spooky way to just head down the steps. Once downstairs, the lights are low and a greenish blue color, the air somewhat fog-smokey. Tickets were 17$ a person which seems to be standard fare for a haunted house general admission. Inside the building we found the queue. Pallets nailed together to look like the sorts of passageways cattle are lead through in a slaughter house. They had a small flat screen television playing the remake of Texas Chainsaw Massacre. A few actors came out to interact with the crowd, one was great and doing just the sorts of things that key up an audience the other just sort of stood behind you and most of the time he moved on before you even knew he had been there. The woman who ran down the rules didn't stay in character very well, and this was a theme throughout the attraction. They do have a nice large space, some of the rooms are huge and sprawling with some really interesting pieces like old grocery store equipment, cases for meat, etc. There is even a school bus inside this basement haunted house. It has potential. That's the only real compliment I have for them. It's not there yet. If they can maintain this space all year, work on the look of each room, fine tune it from kitschy to horrific, hire more actors, and talk to them about focus and the theme of their character it could become another one of Pittsburgh's great haunted houses. For now though, it's just some stumbling, some incredibly awkward talk about every girl being a "nice piece of meat that (I) can't wait to eat," a few startling scares, and at least one if not two juggalos.

The Space Upstairs is a loft space above Construction Junction that is home to the (post)modern…read morejazz dance company The Pillow Project. The door is next to Creative Reuse's on N Lexington Avenue. On the second Saturday of every month, the Pillow Project invites people to come and enjoy a lounge atmosphere of dance, live jazz music, and performances involving mixed-media. Alongside that, the space is used for many other events as well, each group giving it its own special charm. I've seen classes, clothing drives, photoshoots, and many other types of events use the loft. The space itself is gorgeous, with the modern coolness you'd expect from a loft belonging to a performance art troupe, combined with the history of Pittsburgh - since it is attached to Construction Junction, you can be sure that just about everything up here has been repurposed. The large windows let tons of natural light in, and the hardwood floors are gorgeous. Scattered over the space there are a few extremely unique pieces of art including a busted up mattress hanging on the wall and a laptop with a tree growing out of it. There is a large bar off to one side infront of two small openings that look down over Construction Junction. Old couches and tables are scattered throughout the space for seating and a small raised platform, infront of the multimedia control center, is also sometimes used for seating. The only problem with the space is that it is somewhat of a weather permitting space - You really feel it in here when it's hot or cold outside. There are huge heaters on the ceiling for the winter but they're very uneven, so beneath them it's burning, and not too far away it's cold again. But that's what you get when you're in such an old building, it's a really minor complaint. There is also a small waiting area downstairs right inside the door. So if you're looking to catch a cool performance, come on the second Saturday of any month and check it out. If you're looking for a neat event space, be sure to ask the Pillow Project for details. And now I can finally check in to the right place

But it's not just a gallery; it's a living, breathing community hub. I've walked over for everything from super chill community yoga sessions and intensely focused figure drawing classes to packed open mics, live band showcases, and the legendary Lawrenceville Art Crawl after-parties. Having such a kaleidoscope of local talent, music, and performance just a short stroll away made me feel incredibly spoiled; it's the definitive beating heart of the neighborhood's art scene.
