I really enjoyed going to the movies here because of the lack of kids! and the great wine and cheese platter we ordered before we went in. The age group is from 35 years plus They have all sort of movies from Hollywood lastest to festival films. No one ever goes when the Rugby is on so its our little haven to have the place to ourselves. Tickets are super cheap compared to other major cinemas. The foyer has wonderful views over Brisbane CBD which is amazing. They have this movie pass you can buy which makes tickets really cheap and you get invited to special events. Chairs in the foyer need replacing but the cinema itself has very comfortable and roomy seats. The cinema is located at 61 Petrie Terrace and you park underneath (2 hours Free parking) and then you can get a discounted rate if you bring your ticket to the cinema. Tons of places to eat prior to going to the movies but we have been caught out so book ahead. We love Peasant, Libertine and Hogs Breath (steak). read more

I love Palace Cinemas so unbelievably much. I just moved up from Melbourne and Kino is my all time favourite cinema. Barracks isn't Kino, but still a really great cinema, with some large theatres and some smaller. A great range! (I love smaller theatres) Great environment and atmosphere, with kind workers. I'm happy that I live close to a Palace cinema! I wished they handed out the movie poster flyers though, I've only gotten them from James Street so far (I always forgot to grab them at Kino). read more

Love this place! It' so classy and I loved the high ceiling and open window wait area. The theatre seats were super comfy and would be such a fun place to go on a date. I like how you can order adult beverages and even a cheese platter if you fancy. My first experience here was fantastic and I can't wait to go back. I am very pleased that it was my first movie theatre to visit in Brisbane as well. They were holding the French Film Festival and I think they tend to show many international films, documentaries, and those off the beaten path which makes me happy. I was a big supporter of the Belcourt Theatre in Nashville, TN which shows independent films, documentaries, etc. and it reminds me a little bit of that in regards to the films they show, not necessarily the building itself. The Palace Barracks definitely wins for better seating and nice facilities! read more

I do like the fact that they are tucked away at the end of all the food places. There are stairs you go up and all, very formalised ticketing queues, not sure if it was because there was an Italian Film Festival happening... loving the fact that there's a bar/ticket counter and coffee! The coffee wasn't too bad actually. A movie and a large coffee set me back about $15 which is pretty reasonable and there are comfy couchy seats for you to relax on before going into the movie. Seats are really good, set in 2's and you can actually lean back quite comfortably. Staff all friendly and it's a bit of a top location too. read more

It's no one thing that makes Palace Cinemas at the Barracks the best place in town to catch a flick. Being legally able to take a beer as your date to the movies is a big hit with me. Gone are the days of smuggling a bottle of wine into my backpack at the Birch, Carroll and Coyle. But it's not just about the beer. It's also about walking up to the top floor of the complex and looking out over the city's very beautiful inner north. It's about the cinema rooms on the top level being no bigger than a lounge room which sets up an intimate vibe. It's also that Palace Cinemas caters towards more alternative and art house tastes. The biggest win is the discounts to be had when you join the Movie Club. For an annual fee of $19, you get to enjoy $13.50 tickets and get bonuses such as 2 for 1 ticket deals, and a free birthday pass. There are Student Movie Clubs as well as the Golden Movie Club (for pensioners). It is, hands down, the best thing I've ever subscribed to, but I am a bit of a filmie, let's admit it. If you're in the mood for a bit of downtime, Palace Cinemas at the Barracks is the number one spot to head to for a flick. Go by yourself or with friends, it's always a great time. read more

So you have just taken your seat with beverage or popcorn in hand, the lights dim, the curtain draws open and you get a malteser to the back of the head. Or if it isn't a physical disruption its the group of 15 rowdy school kids at the back of the cinema giggling about the latest episode of Gossip girl or something to that effect. You know what I'm rambling about, we've all been there where we have wanted to leap from our seats and scream 'I'VE PAID GOOD MONEY FOR THESE TICKETS YOU INCONSIDERATE LITTLE....' well you can now rest assured that the chances of any of that happening at these cinemas is next to none. The Palace Cinemas in The Barracks complex has a modern, comfortable fit-out offering a licensed bar and cafe and a few medium sized cinemas. I love the idea of having beer and popcorn while watching a movie it just heightens the whole entertainment factor. I have been here many many times now and I would have to say that I can't recall seeing anyone under the age of 18 which is refreshing, knowing that my film will come uninterrupted (unless of course I have a few too many beforehand). The Barrack's is great for parking and the Cinema lets you park free or at the least with discounted rates if you see a movie in its entirety. read more

Palace Cinemas at the Barracks is a great film and event venue, and I can't not add some of my own love for Palace. I actually only started frequenting Palace because a friend of mine does some work for them in her job, so I went along to support her and consequently fell in love. It's not anything to do with the fact that it's a film venue because let's face it, there are heaps of those strewn around Brisbane. I think it's Palace's environment and the types of films it shows that makes it so different for me. Going there, I feel like I actually belong in a higher echelon of society and that I'm instantly becoming more cultured by attending one of their screenings, and in a naïve way, that's actually really fun. At Barracks I've seen movies that I don't forget - Snowtown for example, which was completely horrific and grisly and all types of awful but a stunning film. I also went to the Brisbane International Film Festival where I saw Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy and I got completely sucked into the atmosphere of the festival. Palace Barracks does that to you. I just love it for a change of pace from your average cinema theatre - not to mention Barracks' range of impressive food. I love Palace, and I will continue to love Palace, even when I have to pay $15 for parking. There's something delightfully indulgent about going to the cinema, and Palace Barracks manages to offer the sort of indulgence that adult will enjoy (nothing suss ;). I am, of course, talking about the licensed bar and the option to take your beer or wine into the screening room. Forget the frozen Coke, popcorn has a new best friend! Other facets that will appeal to the more mature movie watcher are the fact that they screen not just standard Hollywood fare but also participate in international film festivals and give coverage to more art-house film. I recently saw a movie from The Italian Film festival there, something you won't find at your average megaplex. Uniquely, the upmarket cinema also screens high-quality video productions capturing opera and ballet performances from some of the world's most famous stages like the Bolshoi in Moscow and the Royal Opera House in London. read more

I like small cinemas. Or rather, cinemas with small rooms. The seats are always comfy, I kinda feel like I'm on the sofa at home, and it feels like a much more intimate experience. This was exactly what I got when heading to Cinema 6 at Palace Barracks on my Tuesday evening. One thing I've noticed in Brisbane is that it's filled with large boutique cinemas. Watching 'Leaf Blower' at the the Barracks tonight, I entered a three level expanse with a good bar, cheese platters and a two page wine list. I was pretty blown away. This isn't what I'm used to when I go to the movies, having always frequented large, large chains. I'm liking it, I tell you that much. Being able to take drinks into the cinema is also a big plus. It makes me feel a little like I'm breaking a rule (even though the theatre tonight had little drink trays rather than cup holders - thank you!) and it allows me to feel more at home. The other thing for me is that is super important at the movies is leg room. I'm 6 foot tall and my legs need some room. Thankfully, Palace Barracks delivered on this too. With the pretty cheap prices I've heard about, it seems I'm on to a winner! read more

1. Parking is free if you stay for less than 2 hours. Usually also ample. 2. Comfortable seats. Some have cup holders. Some small tables. 3. Rarely overcrowded sessions. Not many children. 4. Beer, wine, coffee, tea, cheese platters and more can be bought and brought into the cinema. 5. If you go to any Palace cinema more than twice in a year, become a member. It's worth it monetarily. 6. You can't book exact seats and thus great for larger groups. 7. Nice mix of blockbuster and art house films. 8. Nearby to good restaurants and bars. 9. DO NOT come during sporting matches or food festivals due to proximity to Caxton St and Suncorp Stadium. Context: Have been seeing films here regularly since opening in 2008. read more

Came to the cinema here for a charity event. You walk in past a bar, and you can either continue heading down the back towards a restaurant, or up the stairs to the actual cinema. Here you can buy tickets, popcorn and drinks (and we're talking a bar, not just watered down Pepsi), or sit down on one of the couches and look out the massive windows and take in the lovely view. The staff here are all lovely, and the cinemas are also quite nice. Not run down like many around town. The location is great. There's parking downstairs (you can validate your parking to pay less), or a short walk from the city. If you're wanting to eat, there's a bunch of options around the Barracks in addition to the eatery below. Our only gripe was the toilets only being on the ground level. Bit of a hike if you're needing to pop out during a movie. Over all, really enjoyed the visit and enjoyed the movie. read more

If you like your cinemas to not be filled with teenagers and smell of wee then this is nice alternative to the Southbank Cineplex (sorry guys, I do love you). A membership card is essential, as it knocks the ticket price from a spency $17.50 to a more reasonable $11. They always have an excellent selection of films and often films you won't be able to find at other cinemas (being a Palace Cinema, foreign film is a clear focus). Also the ability to take a ("epic" sized - it's meant to last you a feature... I wish) glass of Tar & Roses tempranillo into a cinema is still a novelty for me. The Palace is the only cinema in Queensland that screened The Cabin in The Woods. I could pretty much end this review right here... But ok, if you must know. The Palace sells you fancy alcoholic drinks you can enjoy in the cinema and every session is like Gold Class. Tickets are a little exxy but the movies are usually the rarer ones. And their popcorn is cooked in healthy live oil, although I'm not sure if that is a plus. They host some great events and are lovely movie watching experience. Definitely a date night winner. read more

The Palace Barracks Cinemas is one of my favourite cinemas in Brisbane. There is not much to complain about this place, it is clean, has comfortable seats and offers a nice selection of films. You would think a cinema like this would be expensive but it is surprisingly affordable, especially if you become a member of the cinema. You can see all types of film here, from your mainstream films to your art house or independent Australian films. The Palace Barracks also hosts a number of film festivals such as the French and Spanish film festivals. This is not really the type of cinema where you would take the kids to see a children's film but since I do not have any kids and don't ever find myself watching those films, it is perfect for me. The bar is licenced which means you can take a glass of wine or a beer in the theatre room with you. Popcorn and soft drinks are also available for those who prefer the more classic cinema treats. I always love coming here to watch movies. The Palace Barracks makes going to the cinemas feel really fancy even though you are not actually paying that much to go there. read more

The first time I went to Palace Barracks, I fell asleep around 15mins into the movie, and I woke up as the end credits rolled. I'm accrediting this to the comfiness of the seating at the Barracks - the chairs are like armchairs! It's wonderful! Unless you're really tired when you go to see a movie... I love that Palace Barracks is right near some wonderful dining options, perfect for a pre- or post-show drink and/or meal. I love that I can have a glass of wine with my choc top. I love that Palace Barracks plays host to a number of different film festivals during the year, and also has some special limited screenings for National Theatre/Opera productions. (I was stoked that Palace picked up screenings for 'The Cabin in the Woods' in June 2012 too, after a bit of an internet movement to stop it going straight to DVD in Australia.) I don't love that free parking is only valid for 2 hours, because movies these days keep getting longer, and there's still the effort of finding a park and getting through the cinema lines and possibly even waiting in queue to factor in to those 2 hours as well as watching the movie. I DO like that you can validate your carpark ticket to extend the $7 charge out for an extra hour (instead of the standard rates of $7 up to 3 hours, $12 up to 4 hours, and ever-increasing), and I like that this validation can be done at any time (as opposed to South Bank Cineplex, where you get your ticket validated after you've seen your movie and then you have 15mins to GET OUT OF THERE!). If you're a regular cinema-goer, I highly recommend paying the annual $16.50 (or $25 for 2yrs) to be a Movie Club member, which chops down the regular ticket price from $17 to $11 - for you AND a plus one (these amounts have all gotten better since Shele's review!). There are other Movie Club benefits, but this discount is the key player. read more

Had time kill as I was waiting for the train back to Maryborough and google showed me the Palace Barracks just up the road from Roma station. What a great experience it was, friendly informative staff, cheap prices... and the cinema ... just fantastic, extremely comfortable seats, crystal clear screen and awesome sound. Honestly... get yourself a membership card. You pretty much recoup costs instantly as you get a free ticket, and another on your birthday. Get in early, though, as they take their time (around 6 weeks) to get a card. (The confirmation email will do until you get it) read more

Only downside is paying for parking. If their fairness they did reduce our parking from $8.00 to $7.00 !! This ain't NYC Playa it's Brisboring so if you want to help attract people start providing a service an that includes overpriced surrounding restaurants. There are many things I adore about this place; the location provides you with an abundance of cafes and restaurants, the huge glass wall on one side of the building providing a spectacular view of the city, south bank and the river, not to mention the selection of less mainstream movies they show. When a documentary I eagerly wanted to see was released, this was the only cinema in Brisbane where that was possible. The theatres themselves are also really nice, with comfortable chairs and air conditioners not confused as to whether their customers are people or polar bears. Now for the things I don't like. Number one is the price; I realise many cinemas now charge similar prices, but it certainly does not make me happy. I think tickets are around $17. Last time I went there, with a group, one of them insisted that the price wouldn't be a problem because she was a member and was therefore entitled to a discount on tickets. However, it turned out the membership discount is only valid for a maximum of two tickets per session, so the rest of us had to fork over the full amount. The other thing that makes this a little bit of an expensive exercise for a casual movie viewing is the parking situation. You do get two hours free, but that's not really enough to cover how long it takes to see most movies, once you factor in arriving, buying tickets, previews and actually making it to the exit in the allotted time. Despite all this, the movies they show win a lot of extra points with me. read more

I went to the Palace for the Brisbane International Film Festival and it was one of the best nights in recent memory. The way this place is set up is pretty awesome, beer and movies just go together perfectly. Comfortable seating and huge screens enhance the experience as well. The Palace Cinemas are also incredibly close to Caxton Street; we went for dinner up the road after seeing Melancholia by Lars Von Trier. If you enjoy your movies then give this place a try, it's an indulgent experience and for that the ticket prices are a little more expensive, but well worth it. read more

The cinemas are OK, but the website is a nightmare. It's slow. And once you've searched for movies at Barracks, you want to buy ticket... which cinema? Barracks. Then "Add another show"... Which cinema? Barracks! How many times do you need to ask which cinema? And it would help if the website understood the Festival Pass tickets. And then, it would help if the phone line didn't ring out before it got answered - even by the robo voice menu! How can the robo voice-menu be busy? read more
