When my girlfriend suggested sailing lessons as an activity on our vacation, I was a bit…read moreapprehensive. It wasn't being on water that bothered me, it was learning to sail a boat surrounded by billion dollar yachts. We decided to give it a shot at Sail Newport. When we arrived there weren't too many signs pointing to the sailing center. And it only seems as if one person was actually working there. Luckily we got checked in rather quickly and we met our instructor Peter. After picking out some life vests we went down to the dock and got into our boat. After Peter took the boat out onto some open water, he gave steering to my girlfriend and rope duty to me. All I really had to on rope duty was pull them tight whenever the sail switched direction. After a few minutes of sailing, my girlfriend and I switched. Steering was a bit more complicated but I got the hang of it eventually. Peter was a great instructor, we didn't feel nervous at all despite it being our first time sailing. Honestly this was a great experience and I highly recommend it to anyone visiting Newport! You can't visit the sailing capital of the east coast and not give it a try.

I had to sit on a section clearly marked "Not a Seat," which was uncomfortable and left my back sore. The red wine I was served was brown and tasted spoiled, and the crew seemed inexperienced and disorganized. While the sunset and scenery were beautiful, the overcrowding and lack of adequate seating made it nearly impossible to enjoy them. For the price, every paying guest should have a proper place to sit and be served drinks that are fit to consume. This was the excursion we were most excited about, which made the experience even more disappointing.

However, even though we may not catch many or may not be able to keep all we catch it's still a great time on a great boat. The first mate Amy also do a spot on job of handling the bait and tackle and even if you have ZERO experience fishing, she's awesome at taking care of everything and giving pointers. This was my first…read moretime out on a boat in about 7 years, and it was my first time snorkeling with sharks (and also snorkeling in general) ever. From the second we arrived at the dock, Charlie made my friend and I feel completely at ease. One of my favorite things about him is that you can tell from the minute you start talking to him that he's not out to exploit the sharks in any way. After tagging over 2,600 sharks, Charlie really just wants to share his knowledge with you and provide a deeper understanding of these animals. His heart is completely in the right place, and he is amazingly authentic and kind. And as for the actual shark-diving experience, it was genuinely one of the coolest things I've ever done in my life. We had EIGHT sharks around us total, and after a while, they came right up to us! I was nervous at first getting into the water, but after a while, you realize that the sharks are just more curious than anything and far more interested in the fish we were giving them. I could have stayed in the water ALL DAY. I would go back again in a heartbeat. Thank you, Charlie, for your kindness, patience, and natural teaching ability. We legit were hooking into 2 and 3 fish on a single rig. I caught sport fish until my arms were tired. After an incredibly active morning we switched over to Black Sea bass and were hooking in left and right. His deck hand was supreme and attentive to keep lines in the water. On the boat ride back she cut the fish into filets and bagged em up! He also offers shark fishing, shark dives, champagne sunset tours and a plethora of other oceanic options.
