We went to get our guitar restrung and to have work done to the bridge which needed modified. They did the work while we waited at an excellent price and in the process they tuned and briefly played the guitar to ensure its sound was optimal. I went to Palen Music Center looking for help finding a particular ukulele. They were able to order it from the manufacturer and it came sooner than expected. Stephen and Marla were very helpful, knowledgeable, and easy to work with. I also asked about lessons and events which they offer like open mic night. Overall, I had a very enjoyable time. I brought in my Bb clarinet today as I thought I had a key that needed to be resprung -- the sales woman at the service desk took a look at it for me and identified a bent key that she repaired in a matter of minutes without any charge at all. Senseney Music offers a great deal of services when it comes to instruments and music needs, from lessons to instrument rentals to everything in between. I don't have a lot of knowledge about most of what they offer, so my review is strictly in reference to the small area of the store I'm familiar with. When it comes to piano music, Senseney has everything a beginner needs. I decided to pick up the piano as an adult and use a self-teaching book, which I found at Senseney. This was recommended by the sweet and wonderful Ms. DeAnn. I had almost finished the book, but I felt like I needed more reenforcement of what I had learned before moving on, and she again came to the rescue, recommending several wonderful books. The books she pointed me towards are perfect, and not just because she's suggesting random books. Instead, she took the time to ask me where I was at in my learning, what I hoped to focus on, and what my general learning style was. She's definitely familiar with all the different piano curriculum, because she was able to locate two fantastic series that have been perfect for me. When one book in the series was out of stock, she ordered it to the store for me, and it arrived promptly. The prices of music books here are also excellent as well -- cheaper than the popular online book sellers, in most cases. While I can't recommend Senseney for most of what they offer - for example, I'm not really sure how competitive they are in terms of instrument rentals or percussion music - I can definitely recommend them for their piano music, due in large part to their wonderful staff and low prices. read more

Great place to go to...They seem to have everything a musician could want, use or need. I have to give a shout out for Steve...He is so patient with me when it comes to guitars...particularly Taylor Guitars! I have a infatuation with these guitars and Steve is always happy to let me try out any and every Taylor they have there. So far, I've purchased three from there...soon to be four..and I know Steve will get the best price that he can for me. I live in Springfield, IL and always made several trips a year to Kansas and bought a great deal of piano music for my students and as a church accompanist I could always find several new things to play. Senseney Music is a great place to go to get music for any instrument, or to buy an instrument. My family and I have purchased a couple of instruments from Senseney's, and they were high quality products that have lasted for years. The music selection is excellent. The music is neatly categorized, so it is extremely easy to find music for any specific instrument; and then to find any specific composer, arranger, or style of music. Anyone, from a professional musician to someone who just wants to teach themselves to play an instrument for fun, will find that the staff here is able to help them by giving great advice and guidance. The music ranges from beginner to very advanced. There is even a small gift section right at the front of the store, with music themed items for sale. It feels rather funny to be writing a review of Senseney Music. It has been, in my opinion as well as many others' opinion, the best music store in Wichita for many years, decades even. Their reputation is an excellent reputation, and they have earned that through hiring the best, friendliest and most knowledgeable staff, only stocking high quality merchandise, and putting the customer first in every way. read more

My feelings over this business are very mixed... If you're interested in Brass or Piano instruments then fine. This is probably the place for you. If you're a beginner Bass or Cello player then this is a great place to rent an instrument. Once you pay it off it's yours. If you're a violin or viola, go to McHugh's Violin Shop for your instrument. Beyond that stick to professionals for private teaching. If you ever consider buying rosin, a bow, strings, etc. buy it from McHugh's for cheaper. At Senseney they only have one string instrument repairer. It can take weeks for him to repair your instrument. If you're looking for starter instrument it good but anything professional, go to Kansas City. If you need music supplies go elsewhere for the prices aren't cheap here. Like I said it's a good business for the right buyer. read more

I have some good things to report, but I will say that if you want your instrument repaired or need your yearly maintenance, I'd honestly recommend professionals or Wichita Bands. They always argue with me about whether or not my pads need to be replaced. They insist this is not the case. I tell them I want them replaced anyway, because I knew they needed it and wasn't wanting to argue about it. Well, they charged me for it. But when I took it in to a professional, I found that he had to replace every single pad except 2. I had been seeing Senseny for 4 years telling them to replace my pads, only to find they had replaced two, and the rest were the pads that came with the instrument. I bought that instrument there. Also, turns out my step-up instrument pads aren't even carried there, so that's probably why they lied about it not needing it. Still. I had been playing on stock pads for 4 years without knowing it. I don't know how they are with brass instruments, but just go somewhere else if you're a woodwind. They also aren't too good with springs. I guess I should have been smarter and not listened to them, but I guess I didn't. However, if you're on a payment plan, you get free maintenance, so there's free polishing. Also, while the beginning instruments are nice, I honestly wouldn't recommend buying a brand-new instrument for your brand-new 5th grade band member. There are cheaper options at pawn shops or other smaller music stores with used instruments. These may also need repairs, but are more financially friendly to parents who are worried their children may not always use the $500 piece of brass they bought. Anyway, they have lots of good things about them, I'm just slightly upset they didn't tell me about my pads. Here are the pros: 1. They will work with you on payment plans. 2. They gave me a discount on a piccolo since I'd already bought a flute there. Extremely impressed about that one. 3. They have many cute cosmetics and bags and decorations and stuff. 4. They have a wide selection of solos and music that's actually reasonably priced. 5. They also have step-up (intermediate) flutes that are really good. They have Powell and Yamaha flutes. I bought my Sonaré from them, and it's amazing. 6. The people there are friendly, and when I was trying out my piccolo there for the first time, the shop keep knew my band director, and when I told him where I wanted to go to college, he said he knew that director, too, and even spoke highly of me to him. He had just met me that day. Guess he liked my playing, since I had never played a piccolo before. 7. Great selection of reeds, metronomes, tuners, tools, batons, and many other instrument-related necessities here that are not found at your average Wal-Mart. I will say that this place is expensive. This is not a complaint. This is a fair warning to someone not expecting it. You'll notice in my above comment I said it was "reasonably priced." These items are reasonably priced for what they are. But don't leave expecting to pay less than $20 unless you're wanting just reeds or a cleaning rag. Like I said, that's not a complaint. I know being a musician is expensive, but it's worth the cost. read more
