Independence Mall has been around since 1979, opening in the heyday of American mall culture with Belk-Beery, JCPenney, and Sears as its original anchors. A fourth wing came along in 2001 to make room for Dillard's, and the place has seen a fair bit of redesign since then. These days, it leans more open and airy, with nods to Wilmington's coastal vibe. We weren't in a hurry, so we mostly wandered just taking it in. We ducked into a couple of shops, browsed a bit, and yes, came away with the Bath & Body Works haul we'd hoped for. Once again we picked up all kinds of wants (snacks, more flip flops) and needs (a hairbrush) at Maxway. The cashier was super nice, as with our previous shopping experience here. We probably spent too much time in the store because there's so much to see in this place. That's probably how we ended up spending buying more than we intended here too. :) We'll be heading back to Carolina Beach this year. Maybe this time I'll buy a new swimsuit at Maxway. They had lots and lots at pretty decent prices.

I am sad to say that they are planning on closing the Maxway store on Carolina beach. It is a sad…read morestate of affairs. Currently the closing is being held up due to legal battles between the city, Harris Teeter, and Public's. As far as I am concerned I hope it stays tied up and Maxway stays on Carolina Beach. I have been a resident since 2011, and they need to let the citizens who live there have a say in what we want. There is too much of the same stuff on the island. Maxway is the only place aside from the recent expansion of Dollar General that has different stuff and reasonable!! I myself want support a Publics, it is to expensive and I pass 100 places on my way home every day. So much odd and end stuff that you want be able to get on the island once they close Maxway. Citizens and vacationers should flood the city council board with emails and hand written letters.
