Palmyra Cafe is a friendly neighborhood restaurant in Gronland serving authentic Tamil food with a tropical flavor profile that's all its own! The Masala Dosai was a crepe made from a fermented rice and uridhal (lentil) batter, served with a filling of spiced potatoes and served with dhal (lentil soup), coconut chutney, and sambar (vegetable/lentil soup) on the side. The crepe was perfectly thin and crispy, and each of the accompaniments was perfectly spiced (especially with lots of mustard seeds). I also tried the Kottu Rotti Chicken, a dish made of chopped roti flatbreads stir-fried with shredded chicken, egg, onion, and chilli. The rotis retained a chewy texture, and the meaty chicken and spices turned the boring leftovers into an exciting new dish. Even more memorable than the food, however, was our server, a new immigrant from Nepal, who made us feel right at home and made special accommodations to serve us even close to closing time. I am Tamil, and my parents and I visited Palmyra Cafe when we were in Oslo. I ordered the masala dosa, and when I took a bite of the coconut chutney, it tasted like my mom's homemade coconut chutney. Dosa had the perfect balance of crispness without being too dry. Likewise, my mom ordered the string hopper(idiyappam) with fish curry, she said the fish curry reminded her of my Achi's (grandmother) fish curry. Very authentic, delicious Tamil food! read more

I give this cafe four stars for hospitality, quality of food, authenticity and genuine owner. Simple cafe decor with no fuss and casual comfy place. Owner was more than accommodating at the time when other restaurants close for the afternoon. Dosa, South Indian thali and drinks were as authentic as they come. I'm so surprised to find tasty South Indian food in Oslo. The restaurant has very simple bare bones decor, but the food is tasty and cheap. We ordered the Masala Dosa, Chicken Curry, String Hopper, and Vegetarian Curry. Samosa - Tasty and large, but spicier than any samosa I have had before. Masala Dosa - The Masala Dosa was absolutely delicious! It came with a side of lentils, curries, and sambal. The dosa had thin crispy edges, but was nice and soft in the middle. Extremely delicious with the potato filling in the middle. Vegetarian String Hopper - I had never heard of this dish until I visited this restaurant. It came with the same sambal and curries as the Masala Dosa, but with the addition of pickled vegetables. The string hopper itself tasted like a generic Chinese noodle except in a more pinkish color. I wouldn't order this over the dosa, but it was interesting to try something new. Chicken Curry - This curry was extremely spicy. I only had a bite, but couldn't eat anymore without rice. The taste was great though. Vegetarian Curry - If you are vegetarian then go for the Masala Dosa instead of this. It came with the same curries, lentils, and sambal the dosa already had. The vegetables taste slightly pickled. Overall, the dish was a bit more boring and lackluster compared to the rest of the stuff we ordered. The food here is much spicier than your typical North Indian food. The dosas take some time to make since each one is made fresh, but it's so worth the wait. The owner is also very pleasant and so nicely asked us to review them on Facebook if we liked the place. Strangely, most of the people here were not Indian. There were several large European (not just Norwegian) groups and one American group. You could tell which group was European and which was American not just by the accents, but also by how obnoxiously loud and annoying the American group was. All the non-Indian groups ordered the dosas, but I did see a table of two Indian locals both order biryani. That must mean their biryani is really good. Was craving some Indian food and Palmyra Cafe wad close to my Airbnb. Good selection of vegetarian/vegan options. I'm vegan and asked for no dairy... they put some with both my samosa and my entree. I am not a huge fan of indian food. Even though one of my closest friends is Indian and she has dragged me to many a indian restaurants around the city, I still find it a little too exotic for my taste. However, I never hate what I get and this time was no different. This place has a very limited menu and they aren't the greatest of English or Norwegian speakers so you might want to come with someone who knows what most things are if you are hesitant on trying new things. We started off with samosas, which were great. They were very fresh, and hot. There were a lot potatoes inside with some awesome spicy tasting thing (I am well versed on Indian food). I got the biriyani with chicken curry. It normally comes with an egg on top, but eggs disgust me so I asked them to go ahead and keep it. It was quite tasty and had a lot of what tasted like safron, of which I am a huge fan of. There was also this pepper thing that was delicious. I tried eating everything with the naan, but it was too thick to really grab anything with so I ended up having to eat with utensils. There was also a pea mash thing that was yummy. So one samosa, an order of garlic naan, and biriyani all for kr 130 is what I would call cheap. I couldn't finish half of it because it was so much food. A couple of my friends got the masala dosai. Both really liked it, one of whom had a mother that used to make it for her when she was growing up, so if she liked it, you know it must be good. Another friend had the kottu rotti with lamb curry and really liked it. According to my friends, they should have brought yogurt with the food since it was a little spicy, but I wont dock them a star since I wouldnt have had the yogurt if it came with the food. What I will dock them a star for was the service. They seemed quite indifferent to us being there. It took awhile before anyone came out from the back to give us menus and it took awhile before they realized we were ready to order. However, they were quick with the food and great at making sure we had water. It's only been a couple of hours, but at this moment I would definitely return. However, we will just have to see what tomorrow brings or maybe tonight, if you know what I mean :) read more

This is a hole in the wall place, but of the tasty variety. The masala dosai was excellent, and the portion size was just about right although perhaps slightly on the small side. I also sampled another excellent dish, although unfortunately the name of it escapes me. It was some sort of a heap of curry/egg/noodles. Went here on a Sunday, there seemed to only be one man working there and he insisted on giving table service, which is nice but obviously takes more time than counter orders. It was almost empty when I came in and I could place my order in a fair amount of time, but when it started to fill up people were getting frustrated by the long waiting time. The food was tasty but not very well presented. The sauces were hastily spooned on the plate which made it look messy and the papadum was oily and very small (naan costs extra). 110 NOK is cheap for Oslo and given the portion size I'd still say it was worth it, but I would probably look for another Indian place if possible. read more

This being my first time trying Tamil food, I can definitely say that I will be a returning customer. The food seemed quite fresh, was tasty, and was accompanied by a variety of sauces that added to the overall taste. Service was quick and readily available. English was the main language of service as it was effective at best. My only complaint was that the food wasn't as hot temperature wise that I would have liked. Came 20mins after opening. Place was not packed yet, there was a woman who took the order. She seemed to be a little bit confused and distracted, since she kept going around, unsure who ordered what etc. Finally got the right portion when somebody else from the kitchen came to our table to confirm our order. Ordered vadai & samosa. Unfortunately they were already pre-made before order (not warm anymore when served). Too bad, since it actually doesn't take that long to fry them upon order. Samosa was only ok. A bit on the too heavily spiced and too mushy filling. Vadai was better than the samosa, but too bad not served warm. For main course we ordered Lamb Biryani & Masala Dosai. They were both good, but again some elements of the dish weren't served warm. Ordered Masala Tea, tasted more like "just tea" and weaker on the "masala" side (weak ginger & cardamom). Unexpectedly really good dessert Mango Delight (pureed mango & pistachio & custard/pudding). Ordered Susiyam, unfortunately since the place began to pack up with customers, they didn't have time to make it. Ok, decent, no frills eatery. Great find! We stumbled upon Palmyra after going to a different well known Indian restaurant in the neighborhood but were left unsatisfied. I'm a regular and returning customer to the restaurant however I had bad experience today. We ordered vegetarian thali - assortment of vegetables based curries along with rice. The rice was hard; it had been reheated several times since the grains were stuck together and were starchy. When we requested the hosts and waiter to replace the rice - he said - please eat this one; we will get you second helping! Well we wanted the rice as served to be replaced and not second helping. The other dishes were served cold. What was evident that the waiting staff was not trained properly. I felt that I was being taken for granted as I belong to subcontinent! One of the reason of this kind of attitude of hosts could be because they believe that vegetarians would anyways flock to such a joint because such offering is limited in the city. As an budget traveler to Norway it can be very hard to find a delicious, cheap meal. Palmyra delivers! You can get a large mixed plate of food with meat and lots of vegetables for 1000 nok. The food tasted great and was fresh. The service was also great. The waiter offered a recommendation and after my meal, even was even nice enough to give me a free Cylon tea. Excellent authentic Sri Lankan cuisine. This is exactly the type of food I have eaten on my Sri Lankan trip several years ago. Service was fantastic. We ordered cutlets, fried scampi, the puttu with fish curry+vegetables, and string hopper w/ vegetables. The owner/server was courteous and advised us that we will have to wait for the puttu and the string hoppers since they are made fresh. It was worth the wait. Everything was delicious and it was spicy. Definitely a must try if you like to try new cuisine. Only problem we had is the server didn't understand English hardly at all and we had some communication problems. He thought we only ordered one dish when we ordered 3.
