I was able to purchase tickets day of and enter early even when tickets were sold out for the current time slot. Climbing the tower is ~20 steps per level and you can walk up 3. There are a few descriptors at each level when climbing the tower to describe the function of each room.

This is such a cute little colorful section of street in Lisbon!…read more A short section of the street is painted hot pink, and there's colorful umbrellas hanging all above- great for color AND some extra shade during the day! Because it's a relatively short part of the road (especially the part with the umbrellas) it can get a little busy, but it's still fun to check out and get a little photo! There's a couple restaurants that are on this street if you want to stay a bit longer than just a quick sighting or a simple walk through.

When my husband and I were on vacation in Lisbon, our tour guide drove us here, and he offered to take a photo of me under the pretty umbrellas. We were there during the daytime, and many strangers were standing on the street and ended up in my photo, and I could Magic-Eraser only some of them. I hear that this street bustles even more for nightlife. The street is not long, so we were there for just a short time.

I could resolve my disappointment only by devouring a half-dozen pasteis de nata across the street. This time I made sure Jamie W and I had reservations for a scheduled time-slot on a day other than Monday. When we arrived, there was still a long line of people and no shade from the blazing sun, but we got in quickly. I have to say the building did not disappoint. Built in the 15th century during the Age of Discovery, it took a full century to complete because the Manueline architectural style was so idiosyncratic. As a tribute to Portugal's seafaring history, the inlays on the stonework were made intricately with decorative paneling on windows, arcades, and pillars. Traditional stone columns were sculpted into twisted ropes, corals, anchors, and sea monsters. The result is a stunning level of craftsmanship epitomized by the beauty and meticulous detail of the cloister. The two-story structure is a prime example of flawless symmetry and historical significance. The church houses the tombs of legendary explorer Vasco da Gama and famous Portuguese poets. Alfama's rustic cityscape is full of red rooftops and whitewashed buildings, which provides ripe Instagram material. As you'd expect, the wide terrace gets crowded during magic hour when selfie-itis reaches epidemic proportions. There's an open-air cafe, but we didn't bother trying it since we realized edible temptations awaited us after our obligatory stop here. I think it's mainly a viewpoint for most people now (especially tourists), but I think it also is supposed to sort of be a connector to different levels of the city, a bit like a shortcut? It only costs a couple euros to go up. I personally didn't ride on it, but I watched it go up and down a few times. That felt like enough for me.

It looks a bit like a conga line on an incline. Regardless, that's what they did in 1960 to celebrate the 500th anniversary of Henry the Navigator's death. It's an awesome work of art designed to resemble a ship's prow. At 170 feet, the monument features 33 prominent historical figures with Henry the Navigator leading the way as they at the Tagus River. On the eastern profile are the seafaring explorers including Magellan and Vasco de Gama. On the western profile are the key royalty, scientists, and missionaries who supported the explorers. It's free to walk around it like we did, and there's an option to pay 8,5€ to enter the museum and observation deck inside.
