I've been wanting to try out traditional Danish delicacies in Copenhagen and Smørrebrød was on the top of my list. Smørrebrød is an open faced sandwich made up dark rye bread topped with spreads and cold cut meat and fish. I had heard of Palægade which is an upscale restaurant in the city so I was excited to see Palægade Smørrebrød, their casual street food style joint at the bridge street kitchen (Search Broens Gadekøkken on the map) The menu here is limited to 4 Smørrebrød as opposed to the 30+ in their main restaurant. This was a little disappointing as I'd love to have tried a few more offerings that just the 4.
I ordered the Herring and the Veggie one. The order came out fairly fast. I wonder if they're prepared already, waiting to be served. The box that it came in was chic with the main restaurant's mission and statement. Inside were the 2 Smørrebrød elegantly placed. The set up looked brilliant and I couldn't wait to dig into it. The veggie one had potato and crisp onion and greens. The combination worked really well. But the herring one took the crown. Slightly salty but fresh tasting, the cut of the fish would make any sushi chef proud. Each bite had delicate elements of taste that worked together brilliantly. Although I'm not a big fan of cold sandwiches, I am impressed with how amazing and well balanced the dish turned out. The bread was dense slightly below the cakey texture but more than a normal bread with the sourness of a sourdough. Again not a fan of rye but loved the taste of the bread that they used. This made me want to go to the main restaurant and try out other Smørrebrøds. Unfortunately I couldn't fit it in my trip this time which is why I wish the street kitchen had more options than just the 4. But I definitely got the taste for it and would definitely have it on my list of places to visit for the next time. read more
