The space is no where as large as the produce areas inside the Reading Terminal Market, but they make good use of what they have, filled with fresh fruits and veggies, selling their own home grown products and that of locals when in season. I've never had a bad experience here, they supply the stand with what they think they will sell in three days and it's always fresh, firm and in great shape. Ha, we are talking about fruits and veggies here. I bought some of the best sweet corn here this summer and their blackberries were so huge and sweet. Squash and Brussels sprout season is coming up and I will go crazy over buying, because I love the stuff. I've never met a fruit or veggie that I did not like and there is always a wide variety here to choose from. Oh and they have a cooler filled with fresh squeezed orange juice, it's so cold and sweet and it's nearly impossible to pass up. Their prices are fair and they are open year 'round, but only on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Can you say Ratatouille!

This is our second year of purchasing a share from Pennypack's CSA and we have yet to be…read moredisappointed. The quality of the produce is excellent and the thought and care put into the farm is unmatched. While they are not certified organic, they practice natural, practical, and ecologically sound and sustainable farming. They have a lot of signage posted throughout the farm (as part of their education program) that explains how and why things are they way they are at the farm. They also have a boatload of dedicated volunteers and workers who keep everything running efficiently. They are happy to answer questions about the farm, the food, and often have ideas about what to do with everything. We purchased the small share and that entitles us to 6 items chosen by us from the options available that day. Last night we chose a pound of carrots, a head of lettuce, two pounds of summer squash, beets, swiss chard, and two pounds of cucumbers. Other items available include kale, bok choy, scallions, and broccoli as well as pick your own string beans and raspberries. They have an extensive herb garden where you can pick your own herbs for cooking that week. Finally, you can cut a bunch of flowers to take with you each week as a part of your share as well. This year we split our share with another family, so we go every other week for our pick up -- as a family of just two, this works out well for us! While the benefits are many (supporting local agriculture, eating local, sustainable food, health, getting outside in a garden), the CSA is a little bit of work. Each share requires a few hours of volunteer work be completed at the farm. Furthermore, when you get home with your pile of veggies, you need to clean and prep them as well as figure out recipes. They leave the vegetables generally intact with the greens and such on top. It turns out you can and should use those parts of the vegetables as well, but if you're a novice (like us) it takes some research and planning to figure out what to do with things like carrot tops and beet and turnip greens. Even though it's a lot of work, it's a fun learning experience and would definitely be a worthwhile activity to get the kids involved with. My visit today made my heart sink as it was the middle of a Saturday and the parking lot was empty. We grabbed some burgers and ate at the indoor picnic table in the empty market. The burgers were great and the price even better. Real hand formed perfectly cooked patties juicy and overloading the bun. We went back later in the week to check out their breakfast and they knocked that out of the park as well. No skimpy breakfast sandwiches here. Pork roll and cheese piled high on a fresh Kaiser roll did not disappoint. The staff was primarily younger but understood good work ethic, and you could tell took prince in what they were serving. I am hoping it was a fluke that it was not as crowded as in the past because a generational cornerstone like Steyer Orchard is a treasure. Stop in and see them. Open daily.

We arrived on a Saturday afternoon, a few hours before closing. Knowing they will be closed for four days they try to sell all they have made, so this place did have some slim pickings. For lunch or anytime, they have cheesesteaks, hot dogs, burgers, barbecued pulled pork, egg, chicken or tuna salad sandwiches. Ham salad is ground bologna with Mayo, onions and relish, which I love and do not make anymore, so I was thrilled to see it here. They have several soups, one was the ham and bean which was so good and they have turkey chili. Chicken croquettes, meatballs, tuna noodle casserole, chicken pot pie, chicken and dumplings, shepherd's pie and creamed chipped beef. The salads are endless and five kinds of potato salad, several slaw salads, various pasta salads, deviled eggs, pickled eggs, lasagna and peirogies. Mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, twice baked potatoes, scalloped potatoes, baked beans, carrot or beet salad, creamed cucumbers with onions and mac and cheese. They also have a large selection of jarred jams, pickles, peppers and sauces. All homemade and I have just covered the tip of the iceberg. I bought German potato salad which was perfectly made, very good mac and cheese, a pint of ham salad, cole slaw and homemade peirogies. I used to make peirogies years ago, but they are so much bother, so it is wonderful to be able to have homemade ones again without sacrificing with Mrs.T's. The ham salad was just as good as it was growing up, best part is I will not eat a slice of bologna, yet I love the salad. They offer a wonderful variety of homemade desserts like several bread puddings, tapioca's, rice puddings, egg custards, oreo pudding and chocolate eclair pudding, which I need to try.
