"Garrison Canal" is a piece of artwork that was designed by artist Andrea Polli and installed in…read morethe Garrison Place alley between Liberty Avenue and Exchange Way. The artwork consists of thousands of lights that were recycled from the "Energy Flow" art on the Rachel Carson Bridge. According to the website for the artwork, Polli describes the artwork as waves of big-data lights under which visitors "swim." The lights change color in response to the weather. Recently late in the evening, my husband and I walked under this artwork. The shimmering lights looked very beautiful. Unfortunately, a man stopped and really stared at us, and even my husband felt worried that we would be robbed. We were not harmed at all (phew!), but I recommend that people walk with a buddy and keep a safe distance from others.

Sculptures of several people walk up a 100 foot tall steel pole, while additional figures are situated at the base, looking up at the others. It was designed by Jonathan Borofsky and is one of two copies. We really enjoyed checking out this piece!

Although some also say it is from the strip mills that were once in the area. Regardless of how it got its name, it is a wonderful place that anyone spending time in Pittsburgh should visit! There are restaurants of every variety. Polish, Vietnamese, seafood, Italian and the original Primanti Brothers location! There is a winery, butcher shop, places to buy kitchen items, a spice store, tons of Pittsburgh themed sports and souvenir shops. Candy stores, Pittsburgh popcorn. Maybe the most known entity is Wholey's Market with their amazing selection of fresh seafood. The strip is always busy during the day, especially on Saturday and Sunday. It is a little less crazy in the evenings because a lot of the retail stores are only open until 5, but there are still plenty of great spots to grab a bite. It is easily walkable and there are a wide variety of parking options (a municipal garage near one end, surface lots, metered spots and some businesses (like Wholey's) have their own lots. What is great is that anyone can enjoy the Strip District. You can enjoy time with your family, wander on your own, have a girls day our or have a date day. So many fun things to choose from. Definitely one of the top Pittsburgh "things to do"

The street has been painted in a vibrant and funky pattern and in the summer months filled with multi-colored tables and chairs. The seating area provides a fun experience for lunch hour or just to take a break and enjoy the views of surrounding buildings. This is one of those little gems I'd love to stumble across as a tourist in another city. Definitely worth enjoying and not taking for granted as a city resident or area local.

The idea was (and is) bringing community together through art and gardening. Octavia (the octopus) is loved by kids and adults alike. There's a little free library onsite too. This is a fantastic community urban garden growing veg to share with neighbors. It's also off the beaten path and mainly known to neighborhood folks. Having said that, an ice sculpture would probably survive here for several months a year in icy Pitt. So it's pretty awesome, and one which is located in Pittsburgh's Lawrenceville neighbourhood. As you can see Barbie came here, and like her, it adds a nice little bit of culture and artistic flavour to the neighbourhood.

Pittsburgh is the city of bridges, and the Urban Redevelopment Association touted this as an…read more'interesting addition': A bridge connecting "Eastside"(Also known as "the part of East Liberty white people aren't afraid to be in") to Ellsworth avenue. This bridge solves the apparent lack of walkability from Shadyside to Whole Foods(And the liquor store), and keeps the area bright with large lighting orbs and glass sequins covering the 12-foot-tall fence - presumably to keep "those damn kids" from throwing stuff on the train tracks below. I don't know if it was ever addressed why they didn't just improve the Highland ave bridge at the other end of the parking lot - presumably because many felt that walking down those steps was "pretty sketchy" - a hard reputation to overcome. The sequins were made locally by the Pittsburgh Glass Center, and the bridge was designed by someone of The 'Burgh, even though they live in WA now. That being said, it's convenient, and I benefit from it. It does look very nice, and puts me that much closer to Petagogy.

Possibly the most famous mural in all of Pittsburgh is the "Bride on Penn Avenue." This mural is an…read moreoptical illusion; a recreation and continuation of the house next door painted onto the back of the adjacent building. Walking up the steps of the painted house is a young bride. Unfortunately, the real line of identical houses has since been torn down, but the last one is still intact to keep the illusion of the mural visible. There are many rumors surrounding the bride's story, such as "she's getting one last look at the life she is about to leave behind," "she is running home and hiding from her own wedding," or even "she is a ghost who died on her wedding night." The artist, however, said that her story is "whatever you think it is."

This is a cool mural on Penn Ave called "Rainy Night Traffic" by artist Dan Kitchener in…read moreLawrenceville. The ability to paint refracted lights and a vanishing point such as this on any canvas is impressive, but painting it on a humongous wall is a major feat. The neon colors and cozy mood contribute to the vibrant, revitalized neighborhood of Lawrenceville. This is a must see.

Fading natural light is a great contrast to artificial city lights. If you do this, I highly recommend bringing a tripod. There are some decent places to eat up here as well! I hiked up through a trail system from the Sheraton, it was a blast!
