Judging from the packed parking lot, this has to be the busiest restaurant in Owensboro. Not only was the parking lot full but people were parking on the street and walking to the restaurant. The buffet was absolutely delicious. Old fashioned creamed corn, green beans mashed potatoes, gravy mac & cheese, corn muffins and fried apples all tasted like they could have come from Grandma's kitchen. We've never been here before and let me tell you!!! YUMMMMMMYYYYY!! We had the all you can eat buffet with a loaded salad bar, hot bar with fried chicken, ribs, kraut &sausage, bbq pulled pork & chicken, meatloaf and all the sides, a soup bar with 3 different options and a dessert bar! Their dining room is very quaint and welcoming and includes a fireplace and red tablecloths and rolls of paper towels on the table. The service was good, just enough friendly to make you feel welcome! Knocked out one of the big BBQ places in Owensboro off our list for sure! Will be back next month to try their Breakfast Buffet!! I'm glad I went back and tried this place again. Much, much better than my first experience. This time I got rib platter with coleslaw and baked beans, and some ham. The coleslaw is fresh, a little pepper, very nice. Baked beans are smokey and the thicker consistency I love. Ribs are delicious and I got a little bit of the spicy sauce to put on them too. Ham is smokey, juicy, not to salty and served cold, sweet meat. On a return home, we re-routed our travel plans to come through Owensboro in order to sample its unique mutton among other barbecue. Our family already has visited the "iconic" Moonlight Barbecue and were underwhelmed then. Hopes were high for the community's "oldest" joint. We were underwhelmed by the overcooked and dried out meat that we were served, including pork ribs, a brisket sandwich and a half chicken (we sampled the mutton, which wasn't remarkable). Considering what we spent, we deserved better than reheated food, especially on a weekend. We came on a Sunday afternoon. Owensboro is now 0 for 2. One more barbecue place to try. read more

I've been to Old South BBQ multiple times over the past year. They have a great selection of meats of sides on their buffet. Service is always great with the servers being engaged and checking on you multiple times. The restaurant has a real homey feel to it. I was a little worried about giving Ole South a try. Buffets are nor usually my choice since most buffets are about quantity, not quality. I was also worried if the BBQ sauce was going to be the vinegar dip variety. But I had to complete the Owensboro BBQ trifecta. Well...those two fears were quickly put to rest at Ole South. I chose the buffet so I could sample everything. I ev3n ate a salad at a BBQ joint but that's boring to talk about. I had fried chicken, chipped pork, pulled pork, chipped mutton, potato salad, beans, Mac and cheese, slaw, mashed potatoes and gravy, cinnamon apple, broccoli casserole, green beans, and creamed corn. You can't go wrong with any of the meats. There are two BBQ sauces - a thin vinegar which I didn't like but the thick and smoky was an accurate description with some sweetness. The potato salad was unique as it seemed like it was a redskin variety with some pimentos and other things. Cream corn had a fresh and delicious flavor. I remember I didn't like the broccoli casserole and the cinnamon apple didn't ha e much cinnamon. Burgoo was very mutton heavy. Dessert was included as well. The bread pudding was my favorite out of tue desserts. Sweet tea was refreshingly sweet. All of this was worth the $15 plus tip I passed out. Today, we were driving back from Nashville and came across Ole Southern BBQ. Upon entering we were seated immediately. For a buffet, they are really clean! We all got the buffet. Their salad portion is fresh with a wide variety of fresh veggies and dressings. Next is the main buffet. The apples and cinnamon were very tasty! The pulled pork wasn't very good. It was dried out been sitting for a bit or overcooked. Their fried chicken was outstanding!!!! So good! The mashed potatoes were a little too buttery (can't believe that's possible lol), but good. The green beans were tasty as well as their bacon strips. We did t care for the coleslaw but I'm not a fan of the type that has a very strong vinegar taste. The corn was very sweet and tasty. Overall, the price was cheap and the place is clean. Funny, I'd highly recommend OSB but not for the bbq... but for their fried chicken!! It was delicious. read more

We've eaten here 7 or 8 times now, usually for breakfast. Their buffet is fabulous. My husband loves their biscuits and gravy! They have the BEST bacon we've ever eaten, and their scrambled eggs are perfectly cooked. The hash brown casserole is better than Cracker Barrel's, and I think their sausage is great. Yesterday, we had the lunch buffet. Yummy! We loved the pulled pork; it was lean, moist, and flavorful. The sides are plentiful and delicious--green beans, broccoli casserole, corn, and more. The salad bar was fresh and had lots of options, including some of their fantastic bacon. The desserts included strawberry cobbler, blackberry cobbler, bread pudding, banana pudding, and soft-serve ice cream. Everything we tried was absolutely delicious! Service is prompt and efficient. This is now our favorite spot in Owensboro, having migrated from Moonlite. We think the food and prices are both better at Ole South. read more

The hot sides are all good, but the star of the show is the fried chicken. If you like fried chicken, then Ole South is worth the trip. Big pieces of fresh, juicy fried chicken are refilled all day. The warm bread pudding with vanilla soft serve is a sweet treat to end your meal. Hints.... Come hungry.. you will want to try everything. My wife's sunny side up egg was a little over cooked but the bacon was out of this world delicious. Wow so I ignored some reviews, may I say I ordered it and ribs is what I wanted then the pkg came in not only were the ribs charred on the sides they were very thin meat very slim and lefty fat and my son weighed the ribs I ordered 1pound I did not get it for sure , I don't care for the sauce it was vinegarie if that's the right word. Recently had two visits here, once for breakfast and once for lunch. Both times our table ate from the Buffett and was pleasantly surprised at the variety of selections. Breakfast had everything you would expect. Bacon, eggs, sausage, pancakes, French toast and biscuits with gravy options. Lunch was bbq selections, fried chicken, veggies and salad bar. Dessert bar had several choices as well. Enjoyed everything and no one left hungry. We moved from Owensboro 36 years ago and since we always ate there, we get pickup every time we're in town. Last Thursday I bought 3 pounds of chopped mutton to bring home. What happened??? Went for the dinner buffet. So good! Definitely smaller than Moonlite but also cheaper; on a Saturday night, it was $16.95 for adults and $8.25 for kids (as of April 2023). Nice salad bar including cole slaw and potato salad, rolls and cornbread, hush puppies, lots of hot sides (cabbage & sausage, mac and cheese, green beans, cheesy hash browns, mashed potatoes, baked beans, creamed corn), fried catfish (whole and fillets), baked fish, pulled and chopped pork, ribs, and (of course) chopped mutton. There was also a big dessert bar with ice cream and hot fudge & hot caramel, blackberry cobbler, strawberry cobbler, banana pudding, bread pudding, and several kinds of pie (coconut cream, chocolate cream, key lime, and pecan). My biggest pet peeve with bbq is when you get pulled bbq and there are bones in it. This signifies a lack of attention to detail and poor food prep techniques. Bones are both inedible and pose a choking hazard. We ordered a family pack of pulled pork only to end up biting down on what appeared to be a whole knuckle. The restaurant is a buffet style but also offers carry out. Since the food was poorly prepared it was definitely not worth the price charged. I won't be back. One knuckle is quite enough. read more
