In the water it's mostly small rocks. If you explore the other side of the cove the rocks in the water are larger, sharper and slippery. Really fun beach with lots of crabs and coconuts. The snorkeling by the rocks on the far side of the cove is not fantastic but still worth doing. Lots or larger tangs and butterfly fish.

Beach a bit narrow but all you need and some nice spots with shade from trees. Cove to left of path had a small area with sand extending into water which was nice for wading, otherwise not much swimming due to flat rock covering entire area out to reef. Reef protects area from having waves on beach. Lack of swimming is more than made up for with extraordinarily clear water.

I always enjoy visiting an ocean pier in a new place, and the pier in Hanalei Bay ended up being a good starting point, with ample parking and great views. Initially created in 1892, it was rebuilt as concrete in 1921. It is 340 feet long, but because the bay is not very deep, the end has only a water depth of 6 to 10 feet (I read it's a popular place for locals to use as a jump off point). It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. Being heavily damaged in 1992 by Hurricane Iniki, it was restored with an added canopy by 2013. The close by parking lot is Black Pot Parking, named since the beach in this area was a local community meeting place, where a large iron pot was kept nearby to cook freshly caught fish during gatherings.

It's pretty spacious and you don't have to wait a long time to have an opening to jump. There are picnic tables on the pier where everyone keeps their stuff and my oldest watched our items while my youngest and I enjoyed ourselves. It's not very deep here--when I was jumping, I'd actually barely touch the bottom, so, be careful. There is a bit of a wait to get back up onto the pier though as everyone swims over to one of two ladders. The rungs on the ladder are metal and very narrow and slippery, so it's kind of painful climbing up and VERY slippery, so take your time and be careful!

It was wonderful but I don't think it is worth visiting if you are not a DoD CAC badge holder, given the relatively nearby and far more accessible Kekaha public beach. Majors Bay is known by several names, but the Navy held a renaming ceremony in 2024 to return to the beach to its historic native name, Waiapua'a Bay. The beach there has ample paved parking, very nice restrooms and shower facilities, and nearby beach cottages available for rental by military, military retirees, and DoD employees with reservations prioritized for active duty personnel. The wide, beautiful beach offers gorgeous views of the sunset and the water looks remarkably calm most of the time. However, swimming is not advised due to potentially rough surf and lack of lifeguards. Aliomanu Beach is not the easiest beach to access, as you will have to park at the designated parking lot, then hike about 5 minutes through tall grass and weeds, then another 5-10 minutes boulder-hopping until you reach the sand. But it's well worth the effort and you get beautiful views of the bay!

The sand is soft and there are plenty of places to relax with few crowds at sunset on July 4th. The water is rough, and we only allowed our keiki to wade in. They still got soaked by the pounding surf. There is a bit of debris on the beach itself, but the views looking north are pretty amazing. Got that great beach at sunset shot (although so weird being from California that the sun sets mauka side on this part of the island. It was a lovely and relaxing way to spend Independence Day.

The detour drive to beach is so green and beautiful. There are houses all along, they have an amazing view of greenery and ocean! Coconut trees are loaded with coconuts!
