We stayed in the Sunrise Hale Yurt. It was nice with a big deck just off of the beach. If you want a camping experience without bringing or renting the gear, this would be a great option. The only drawback of this yurt was the 3 windows and clear skylight. It would get very warm during the day. So just prepare for that. (There is a provided fan.) The camp manager was very accommodating when I figured out that we needed to stay an extra night and found us another yurt for the extra night! read more

Great camping experience!! We spent a week in the newly renovated youth yurt. Absolutely loved it!!! Comfortably fit the 4 of us in the king/queen bunk bed. Also came with a small table, 4 chairs, full refrigerator, lamp and one outlet. We brought extra lamps with us as well as an extension cord with extra outlets as there is only 2 plug ins in the yurt. Felt super safe in the area and loved the people working here. Came with clean bottom sheets on both beds and clean pillows. Bring extra blankets! The showers were warm & clean as well! Great patio in front and a pretty view of the ocean. Free coffee from 7:30-8:30 We definitely recommend this place if you're looking for a camping experience. read more

Pros: Locally run operation with great intentions. Ocean views, right next to your campsite. Affordable as far as lodging on Kaua'i goes. Showers are hot. Cons: $40 is a lot of money for two people to camp. Massive, bright floodlights stay on all night long, ruining ambiance and star viewing. (and making it look like the sun is constantly about to rise from your tent) Also, this place has an environmental focus, why leave these power hungry lights on all night long? Bees building a hive in the bathroom. (not a joke) Dirt. Dirt everywhere. This area could really, really use some grass. The whole area looks like it has been strip mined. Misleading online representation: this place presents as a lush environmental/yoga retreat. There is almost nothing green here though, (see above) so it feels a little deceptive. Loud 4x4's doing burnouts on the beach all night long. (not the fault of Kumu, but should be noted) Conclusion: If you're looking for a cheap place to sleep near Kapa'a, this is it. I'd recommend spending the extra money on one of there bungalos/tentalos though, $40 is a lot of money to sleep in your own tent on the dirt. read more

Stayed here for two nights of our camping trip because they accept rooftop tents. They have so many options for camping, bungalows, yurt ground tent etc. they have coffee hour in the morning and Donna (property manager) is so sweet. It's a little on the pricey side for a campground but it's probably the best one Ive stayed at so I wouldn't mind paying the price. Such a great place to stay on the island of Kauai. I like to get out of the condos and feel like I am actual staying on the island. The hosts are wonderful and you have a choice of camping out in a tent, tentalow or yurt. If you choose a camp spot, you can just pick up a tent at Walmart or Costco. There are also other places that rent out VW camper vans and you can bring them here to camp. The location is perfect - right on the beach. If you prefer calm waters to swim, you can walk to the right, past another camp ground, go all the way to the end and there is the most beautiful cove to swim in. Also the location is great as far as getting to other parts of the island to see. It's around half way to the north and south of the island. read more

Kumu camp was recommended by a friend and it was Everything they said it would be. It is the perfect place to stay if you like a more natural experience, connected with nature and down to earth. Not only is staying here economic compared to expensive resort hotels with no personality, you can have a sweet, romantic private beach view getaway Or commute with other travelers, have early morning coffee, grill in the outdoor kitchen and eat by the beach, and feel the sand between your toes. The bungalows are perfect, queen sized bed or two twins, sheets and pillowcases are provided but you can bring your own if you like and extra sleeping bag or light blankets to get cozy at night. We stopped and grabbed a battery powered lantern at Walmart but even just a flashlight will do since there is no electricity. There are overhead lights at night lighting the way to the bathrooms which have a code. The bathrooms are clean and well stocked and the manager Donna is so nice and helpful to any questions you may have. The land is beautiful and welcoming for all types of people from local groups to vacationers. We felt safe and comfortable and slept so well to the sound of the waves. The patio furniture allowed us to lounge and relax and also look at the beautiful stars at night. Sunset and sunrise on the beach and the camp is a short drive down a road that turns off the main highway. Only about 10 min from the local town where you can get food, walk around etc. Overall this was the perfect place to stay and I recommend it for those who love camping and being in nature and great for families and big groups or couples. They even have couples massage. This is a priceless experience and a REAL beachfront stay. If you want to be in a spotless hotel w air-conditioningand someone cleaning your room and all that, go pay 600 a night and you still won't get the beach view and gorgeous experience of this unique tucked away treasure of this island . Great price/value. Make sure you take a walk down the beach to the left and swim in the river if the water is rough. Positives: The managers are friendly. They let us use a cooler for free while we stayed there. They have a nice volleyball court. Short walk to beach. No mosquitoes. Bathrooms were clean. Super easy to check yourself into. Beds/mattresses are pretty good (I advise bring a think blanket to lay on top of and a second light blanket/sheet if you like something on top of you). There is a community kitchen that looked clean and some people were using it. Negatives: Need more outlets or at least outlet multipliers. There is only one outlet in one corner of patio so you should charge your phone in your car anytime you're driving. Need more fire pits! One per site! I know fires are only permitted for cooking, but why can't everyone cook hotdogs and s'mores at their personal campsite. Buildings (Hale) can get pretty warm if there's no breeze, so bring a battery fan if you can. Online map is outdated. Camp seems a little disorganized. Walk paths are not clearly identified. read more

We loved our stay here! We rented a bungalow for $90 a night. We could see the oven waves crashing from our bed and enjoyed listening to the waves all night. There was a cool breeze (we stayed in March) that kept us comfortable inside the bungalow, as well as a deck with old patio furniture. The bed was comfortable- even fitting (though barely) my 6'2 husband. What a great way to experience the island at an affordable rate & w/o living out of a tent (not easy to do). I love this place! I had my GF from MO meet me there. I stayed there before with a youth group and wanted more. It was everything we imagined and then some. In spite of the extra wet weather we enjoyed ouselves. From the mornig tea with Donna (site manager), walks on beach, BBQ cooking in community kitchen and just the ambiance. We met some of the nicest people there from all over. It's camping with some amenities, let's you get away and reconnect with the aina (land). Sleep to the ocean waves and enjoy the strong breeze. I loved the camp ground and location but unfortunately didn't have the best experience. I arrived to find tree trimmers cutting down most of the trees. With no prior notice from the camp, the tree trimmers had to tell me I wasn't allowed to checkin until after 5pm and would need to leave the next morning at 8am. Ok I get that there were safety issues with trees but would have been nice to get notified in advance. The staff offered a refund but we were not able to find an alternative place to stay. This is a great location if you're expecting to camp and have come prepared, but not if you're expecting an AirBnB type experience for the tents or yurts. read more

Kumu Camp + Garrett came thru in a pinch! We had to end our trek on Kalalau Trail early due to rain. Called Garrett around 5pm checked into our Tentalow at 8pm. Clean sheats, ocean view, and a bed! We slept with the sound of waves crashing and woke with the roosters. Garrett came by the next morning for payment. We asked for the trash to be emptied and refreshed as there were maggots in there- handled. We bought fire starters at Home Depot and had a great fire, dips in the ocean, and camp food. There's no electricity in the Tentalow but our camping headlamps were enough. Windows open to let sunlight in. Bathrooms also have no electricity, but are totally sufficient and like our campground bathrooms. This was a great find and so relaxing to chill at! read more

This is a culmination of multiple visits over the last 4-5 years, so I figured I'd finally leave a review. Kumu Camp has been a staple in my Kauai backpacking experiences over my five visits to the island. 1. Located in Anahola, it's a great center point to being North Shore/Kapa'a + availability to easy access to the south side as well. 2. Booking online is incredibly easy through CampLife. 3. Other reviews have mentioned the late-night 4x4 vehicles that fly through the beach making loud noise, but all things considered, $40 (2 people) for beach front camping + showers (mostly hot) along with location on island, it's 100% worth it. It hasn't bothered me in the slightest dealing with a little noise from time to time. 4. The camp host Donna is phenomenal. Any/all questions/concerns were addressed immediately. The bathrooms have been rather tidy every single time considering the amount of people/families that have been around during my stays. On a number of occasions Donna was able to accommodate my last-minute, on-the-fly bookings (I regularly book my stays as I'm on-island). 5. Due to Covid, a number of years-past camping locations on the island are closed indefinitely (Haena/Blackpot Beach/Salt Ponds, etc) , so it can be somewhat problematic not booking in advance, but as mentioned, Donna did her best to make sure we could be taken care of. 6. I've stayed at Kumu upwards of 20 times over my five visits from my mid-20s to mid-30s, and every single time I end up meeting an array of different people, like-minded, and wonderful in nature. I've stayed everywhere on the island, and there's never a doubt in my mind that Kumu Camp can be called home for however long my stay is. Hopefully this helps in your future stay. This is a privately owned campground and one of the few places in Kauai you can legally camp in your vehicle. We stayed for 3 nights in our Jeep rental and felt very safe and welcomed by our host, Donna. Hot showers & free hot coffee in the morning. Lots of other friendly campers. I hate to give this a 4! I wish there was a 4.5 rating! We booked easily online and showed up and left when ever! I never once met anyone which wasn't a bad thing at all! They messaged us the bathroom codes upon arrival and other than that we did our own thing! For $30 per night we woke up every morning to the ocean! We originally planned to only stay two nights here but we felt very unsafe at the campgrounds on the Southaide so we drove back to Kumu each night! It's very centrally located to both South and north shore! They must of fixed the previous negative comments because the ladies shower was HOT! I highly caution all camper van people to sleep with your hatch closed and doors locked. Because you are on a public beach there are people that can access your site easily. Last night my husband woke up to a man staring at us! He jumped up and the man slowly walked away... it was creepy! We have no idea on intentions but we started to not sleep with the back open! The 4 stars is only because I feel like they really need to spruce up the place!!! It has sooooo much potential! I am not a native so I can only imagine the salt water is not your friend Camp sites 1-8 are the best! Ocean views! Site 1 seemed to be less of a view only because of thick brush! read more

This was the perfect Kaua'i experience, hands down. I was planning to only stay for half my trip and maybe stay at a resort the other half - but ended up staying all 8 days that I was on the island. I was in campsite 2, right by the ocean. The site was spacious, quiet on weeknights (a few beach goers on Saturday night), with a beautiful ocean-front view and access. The bathrooms were clean (good pressure/hot shower) and the included propane grills in the central pavilion were a great place to cook at night and meet other campers. Every morning from 7:30-8:30 the on-site managers put out coffee and gave advice on things to do on the island, it was really really nice! Mahalo Donna and Dave! I can't wait to come back. Kumu is more than a camp, it is a place where people from around the world can get together and share their passion, a meal and a drink in paradise. You are camping, this is not a luxury resort. The motorcycles can be a bit loud, but this is a very non touristy local beach in an area that has one of the largest native Hawaiian populations on the island. Great spot to enjoy the beach right up to your camp site! The road into the campground is a little rustic which make it feel more like a secret beach to me. We rented a camper van and stay for 5 nights. Quiet and peaceful. Hot showers, clean restrooms, and free hot coffee! This campsite is located near the center of the horse-show shaped highway that surrounds the island and makes this spot a great hub to come back to everyday. This place had some bad reviews that made me a little concerned before going so I want to clear things up from my experience. Some of the other comments seemed misleading after having been here. This experience is a small step above camping. If that's not what you want then this isn't the place for you. If you like the idea of camping on the beach, in a comfortable place, with the sound of the ocean to fall asleep to, then this is an excellent option. The beach bungalows are comfortable and set in a beach forest just off the beach. The beach is great and quiet. Swimming can be a little choppy depending on the day but doable. To dispel some myths...the sheets are clean (and they have a full room of clean ones at check-in if you don't like yours), there is hot water at the bathrooms, your bungalow will lock, and the managers are friendly. This is not glamping, but if you don't expect that, the value is fantastic for the island to be right on the ocean. read more

What should've been a retreat from the chaos of 2021 swiftly became a $560 headache and a disheartening experience. I work in radiology at a hospital and unfortunately became infected with COVID a week before my visit. My health deteriorated rapidly so my friend had to call on Saturday to cancel my reservations for Tuesday. This was the only establishment on my trip unwilling to offer a partial refund or credit. It's really unfortunate that during these times people are stringent about the wrong things. It's sad that being a responsible and considerate citizen results in being penalized. Clearly this place prioritizes personal gains over health and at the expense of their customers amidst a pandemic. This sort of behavior is why people blatantly disregard admonition to stay home out of fear of losing hundreds of hard earned money. read more

Absolutely loved every single thing about this place, camping with a bed and a clean bathroom (aka glamping). The location is ridiculous, I mean waking up and going to sleep so close to the waves and waking up to roasters and the most perfect sunrise. Management is there to hand out keys and keep the grounds clean, If you want to be pampered then you should be at a hotel. I seriously hated leaving this place, more so than any hotel I have ever stayed in. I can't wait to come back makes travel so cheap and entertaining. We booked the Sunrise Hale Yurt for three days, staying at our time share before and after. It was right on the beach, with a huge deck where we could lounge and watch the ocean. We could also swim whenever we felt like it. The Yurt seemed huge, with beds for all four of us, a small fridge where we stored our food from the resort fridge, a light to see after dark, and plenty of outlets to charge our phones. We loved it! The bathrooms were always clean, it was quiet most of the time, and there was excellent, unlimited free hot coffee in the morning between 7:30 & 8:30 in large containers (not those small styrofoam cheap ones). I emphasize "hot" because we could add cream or milk and it wouldn't cool it down too much. Donna was fantastic. Customer service, whatever you need, always with a smile and a great attitude. For those of you who would prefer to bring your own tent, having experience I scoped out the sites: number 7 is the best! It's on the beach, next to a beautiful wood grove, with plenty of shade. If you have a big party or want even more privacy, book both 6 and 7. The locals do occasionally drive past on the beach, however there were very few people on the beach in front of the camp otherwise. It's camping, but in style! read more

Kumu camp is the way to go on the Northeast side of Kauai! It's a great neutral proximity to most of the best things to do and places to go on the island. Camping here or renting one of the yurts or other rooms is worth it if you want all the amenities at an awesome beach location. The campsites right on the beach provide a great view, though that also comes with some noise as not only are you closer together with other camper neighbors but you're right next to the public beach drive. Some folks we assumed local would be driving around and playing loud music at the worst times. Next time I would pick a tent campsite further in the back for this reason and for more privacy. Despite this I'm still giving this place 5 stars because we had a great time here. The beach is awesome and the host Donna is the best! She provides a coffee hour from 7:30-8:30 and my partner and I had a lovely chat with her over coffee for a couple mornings. Check this place out!! read more

The most amazing experience. Garrett truely encompasses the Aloha spirit. Our group got stranded and they were patient and considerate in helping us deal with the aftermath. Went out of their way to extend their generosity. The tentalo was clean and held up impressively well in adverse weather. The location on the beach magical. Perfect for a getaway. First time in Kauai and a friend recommended kumu camp. We loved kumu camp. I stayed in a bungalow and a tent here for my duration of two weeks. Both amazing! The beach front views you couldn't get better than this and the price. This was a very great first experience, staff Donna was amazing, we found ourselves coming back to the camp and she was able to open up a bungalow up for us on a pack weekend for a volleyball tournament. I love this place because of location, amenities and the price. If you love camping and the outdoors this is the spot to stay at. I recommend bungalow 1 and 2, and tent site 1 and 2 was the best.
