The starting mashed bean dip is a big hit, and the chips with it nice and fresh. Complimentary seconds on chips and bean dip and salsas! Salsa bar! My friends had fajitas - chorizo and Steak - and liked them. Nice accompanying side dishes with all entrees. I ordered the fish Veracruz, which had too much "glop" on it for me (a creamy sauce, sour cream) and lacked the traditional olives. The tilapia fish was cooked well in it however, and I ate it all. Just not a version of this dish that I would have liked. Service was excellent! And as it was my birthday they served a ball of Fried Ice Cream in a Tortilla Shell and sang. Very impressed with this Mexican food restaurant in NC! My family and I are from TX and we were visiting family in Sylva. We were craving Mexican food, so we were told to check out Papa's and Beer. We went for lunch and ordered off the lunch menu. I ordered the beef fajitas. Wow! There was so much meat on the plate. I could have shared my meal. The flavor was spot on. Our server was helpful and polite. We asked about salsa and he directed us to the salsa bar. I enjoyed trying all the salsas. We come up to the area once or twice a year, and typically eat at the same "favorites". A friend from back home had mentioned Papa's & Beer from when they visited this spring, so we decided to try it -- and all the other recent reviews that praise this place are spot on!! We came at 7:30pm on a Friday with a party of 9 and were seated right away in the front area, just before a big rush. Immediately hot chips and their bean dip was brought out, and I knew about the salsa bar from another Yelper, so we went and loaded up. Our waiter was very friendly and got our drinks right away, then took our order. Plenty of TVs around the front porch area to keep you distracted if you want, but we were all talking about our day. I would recommend that they add blinds or a shade on some of the front windows to block that setting sun when needed, it's brutal. Hot chips were replenished until our food came out. Wow! HUGE portions! My steak fajitas were a BIG pile, and after making 3 good sized fajitas, I still brought half home! My wife and MIL split the chicken chimichangas and could only eat half between the two of them. My BIL and SIL had enchiladas, and the nephews had a mix of chicken fingers, chicken tacos, chicken nachos, and a California burrito. Most of us have containers of extra food right now! For dessert we split a few fried ice creams and an order of churros, all delicious! Everything was cooked or made perfectly, tasted amazing, and we immediately added it to our "must visit again" list of local places! We have been to the one in Asheville a few times and always had delicious food, same for this location! Tons of sewting and the parking lot is huge, so there is no need to worry about space. We are huge fans of the bean dip they bring out with the chips! We tried the chimichangas, quesidilla, and margaritas, and all were delicious! Service was horrible My friend and I came in for a late lunch and was served a basket of tortilla chips right away with some horrible beige salsa made from refined beans we almost finished the basket of chips before we had a waitress finally come and take our order. After waiting, my friend got their order and I had to wait another 5 minutes before I received my order. The wood was average but they fill you up on refried beans and rice. We kept trying to flag down the waitress for drink refills but she kept avoiding us And to top it off, we were asked to sit in a booth in which the seats were patched up with black tape After we left we realized that black adhesive was all over my friend. This place might be handicap accessible getting into the restaurant. However, the bathroom is not accessible, at least the men's is not. I'm disabled and use a powered wheelchair, I visited today for lunch with a friend and needed to go to the restroom. I go open the door to the restroom... And in order to open the stall door, I have to back out of the restroom, while swinging the stall door open, then go into the stall, but the chair does not fit in enough for me to close the door and it is a safety hazard. I'm unable to get up to transfer to the toilet. And in order to wash my hands, I had to come out of the stall backwards go out of the bathroom close the stall door, then come back into the bathroom to roll up to the sink to wash my hands. When I tried to mention this to a manager, it was just me causing an issue. read more

We always have a great time at this location. My only complaint is that if my dancer teen wants a kids meal because she doesn't eat so much, she should be able to. They strictly enforce the 12 max for a kids meal. It's not like there are tons of stuff for her eat where they are losing money. Other than that, this place is the bomb! read more

Papa's and Beer has always been one of our favorite places in Waynesville. From the warm bean dip to the sauce bar, we love almost everything about it! We came in on a busy Saturday and after waiting awhile, we were sat on the patio. Our waiter seemed to be handling all of the tables on the patio and although it was very busy, he still had great customer service! Our food was served quickly and was still steaming when it came to the table. My husband's burrito was delicious and the kids' cheeseburgers and fries, quesadilla and fries, burritos and fries all had good portions and were very tasty. I steered away from what I usually get and was a little disappointed that the tamale was slightly overcooked and not great. I would still give them four stars for overall experience and next time, I will stick to what I know! read more

After three years of getting takeout and/or dining in at least once a month, this is the first time I've had an experience here bad enough to leave a warning review. The food has been slipping in quality now for a few months, but we really love P&B and want to support local (especially after Helene), so we went in for a meal. But the waiter (Gabriel, according to the receipt) tonight ruined it from the start. Their menu is large, and though my spouse & I made our choices after a few minutes, when the waiter came to take the order, I opened the menu again to make sure I had the name of the dish right because I'd looked at 3 with similar names. He badgered me because & couldn't find it quickly enough to suit him! He'd only been at our table for approximately 15 sec; this would only have added about 5 sec to his transaction. That makes twice now that I've had two servers -- both male, one young & one middle-aged -- be really rude for no absolutely no reason at this location, so I'm starting to think there's a problem. My advice is go to the any of the other locations--or just go to El Que Pasa instead. The food will be better and so will the experience. read more

I don't normally leave reviews for restaurants since I only ever have an average experience eating out. However, the food here was incredible, even the dip for the complimentary chips was delicious. Everything here was excellent. We came in at a good time because our food came out almost immediately after ordering it. I had the arroz con pollo and my wife had the ground beef chimichanga. We shared our plates with each other because the food was so good. We will definitely be returning, this is our new favorite Mexican joint. On another note, the booths were easy to get in and out of and the music wasn't overbearingly loud. It was a nice comfortable environment to eat in. read more

My partner ordered Mexico City tacos ... we always share bites ... the beef was prob best I've tasted im not a huge beef fan but this was delish so was the pork. We sat in a booth on the patio which was super nice .... I love a good booth. I had the torta sandwich with shrimp on the waiter's suggestion. Did not disappoint! The torta could've served a family! The Yelp three star review is pretty spot on for this joint. Pros: the food is pretty tasty and they have a salsa bar where most of the salsas range from medium to pretty hot. Cons: the service is real slow and for some reason I found all the food to be on the cold side. Like it wasn't nuked long enough. Not a great feeling, especially if you're gnawing on some fish or shrimp tacos. It's too bad because as I've said earlier the food is tasty. read more

I usually don't write bad reviews on this site. But I can't in good conscience not write a bad review for this place. I've been here 3 or 4 times, and even though the food has been awful, I've given it the benefit of the doubt each time. Never again. As for the food: The soup was watery and bland. The carne adobada was more fat than meat. The sauce on the wings was just nasty. I know this is a Mexican place, not a Buffalo wings joint, but still, dang. So we got our check, and I noticed they overcharged us $3 on one of the items. When I went up to pay, I told the lady (as respectfully as possible) that our bill was $3 more than what it was. She pointed to this sign next to the register that said something along the lines of "prices subject to change". I calmly told her that I hadn't seen the sign, and regardless, I didn't feel comfortable paying that $3 because I felt like I was blindsided by it. She became irate (seriously!) and loud, and I was just like... look, I'm not going to argue with you, here's the $3. Hey, at least they give you a cash discount! But seriously, if you want good Mexican food in Waynesville, go to Mi Montañita taco truck across from Ingles on Brown Ave. A million times better food than Papas & Beer, and the people are nicer. read more
