The Papawai Lookout, also known as the pali lookout, is a scenic vantage point along Honoapiilani Highway on the southwest coast, which perched atop a cliff and sports terrific views. It's a good whale watching spot and could get very windy during the day.

An absolutely perfect place to see a sunset. Views of Haleakalā, as well as the islands of Molokini, Kaho'olawe and Lana'i. We stopped on the way back to the airport. It is worth the time to stop if you are going to Lahaina.

Review #028 - 2020 Each time I visit Maui, this spot is a must stop! I've usually only ran in and out to take a few quick photos every time I stopped by in the past because my daughter's usually sleeping in the backseat so it's not easy to spend more than a few minutes here. Luckily, we were able to get a good parking spot this trip with my brother & his wife so we were able to spend a good half an hour taking pictures & we even saw a few whales. My daughter did not want to leave afterwards. We've never been here in February before so I didn't even know that you can actually see humpback whales here. The things you learn when you spend a little bit of time to relax & not rush off. So glad we showed up during the right season so my brother and his wife could enjoy the experience with us!

During our most recent trip to Maui we visited Papawai Lookout twice. Not only were the views stellar and totally worth the drive, but we actually saw whales! On one of our stops we were fortunate enough to run into someone who worked at the Pacific Whale Foundation. She was very knowledgeable about Oceanography and whales, and was happy to answer questions and even to help us see the whales better by loaning us binoculars :-) When it's clear the view you'll get from here of the neighboring Islands and the Maui shoreline is nothing short of spectacular! The view of the ocean is lovely as well :-) On another of our stops we were fortunate enough to enjoy a brilliant sunset; I suggest you come here at sunset if you can time your visit accordingly - it's unquestionably the best time of day to visit!

I have a soft spot for Papawai Lookout as this was my first stop in Mau`i during my first Mau`i visit back in 2001. Looking out at the vast ocean with Molokini and Kahoolawee in front, Lana`i to my right and Central Mau`i to my left, I was almost able to forget the horrific scenes of 9/11 that had been seared in my brain from news overload. Every visit since, it has become my traditional first stop from the airport on the way into West Mau`i over years when I mistakenly thought it was called Maalaea Overlook, then McGregor Point, to I guess officially now the Papawai Lookout. Having been twice during whale season, all you need is a pair of binoculars and on occasion the naked eye to see some whale action. Scan the horizon for puffs of water, concentrate on that area, and be rewarded with fin or tail slaps and if you are lucky a whale breaching!

If you're visiting Maui, get off of the goddamned road and pull over, fool! This is the absolutely best elevated place to look for whales on Maui. Great parking and ease to safely get off the busy two lane road. It's a whale for crissakes. Best to view early morning or right before sunset when it's cool and the sky is colorful. If you look intently for 5 minutes, closely staring at the sinking sun over the island of Lanai, there is the silhouette of a unicorn leaping over a rainbow with a green flash.

    nice views - few people

A nice stop Chances are - if you spend some time in Maui by car - that you will pass this Lookout. It offers some lovely views. It has more than enough parking spaces, it was never full when we passed it. Sometimes some locals sell some jewelry, if you are interested in that kind of thing. Depending on the season, you might even be able to see some passing whales here. We've been here in summer - no whales. So, be sure to spend a few minutes here and get some nice pics. It's easier to get here, if you are heading south/east. Because the Lookout is located at a turn.

Papawai Lookout is located off Honoapiilani Highway. This is a designated scenic point between Kahului and Lahaina. You'll see a sign about 1,000 feet before entering the small parking lot. Views from the Papawai Lookout include multiple islands that surround Maui, the great Pacific Ocean, dolphins, whales, and the towering mountains behind you. The view is beautiful and I was lucky to see a few whales. TIP #1: An employee or volunteer from The Pacific Whale Foundation is also at the point. He or she will answer any of your whale questions. Whale Done!! TIP #2: Good idea to bring binoculars. Whales are pretty far. TIP #3: Less than 10 parking spots.

Directions to get to Papawai Lookout: Driving west side from Kihei.,Located off Hi-route 30, a few miles from Ma'alaea Harbor, look for the central pullout lane and "scenic lookout signs" Watch for the clear breaks in traffic and make a left with caution. Coming from Lahaina : HI-route 30 for miles from Lahaina, past tunnel then look for the signs "scenic lookout" then make a right. When you are entering and leaving Lahaina, Don't forget to make that turn and don't drive too fast, you don't want to miss the entrance to Papawai scenic lookout. It is a must to stop here, allow time for a stop here. Its so worth it for the breathtaking view. Besides the view, get your Iphone and camera ready to take your photos. A photo-opportunity you do not want to miss. There are limited parking in front and a information sign regarding humpback whales. FYI- The Hawaiian whale season stretches from mid-November through mid-April. I wasn't lucky enough to see any whales this time, but I really enjoyed taking my family photo and enjoyed the breath-taking views for that short period of time when I have to say "ALOHA" and til we are back again Maui. When you are visiting, always be careful and be aware of the terrain outside of designated parking and viewing area, is rough and stay within the quadrails. Always make sure your car doors are locked when you leave your vehicle. Enjoy the moments and enjoy the view!! *If its whale season, don't forgot your binoculars.!! 2016 #90/100 Yelp Challenge

Amazing spot to take pictures. Make sure you walk down the trail and get to the rocks for a spectacular view. We went on a Wednesday at around 10 am and there was plenty of parking. This stop is a must if you're driving to/from Lahaina

This is a great stop. Have your binoculars handy. The view from this lookout is breathtaking like from much of Maui in general :) Parking can be tight here so be courteous and aware of your surroundings.

A week before our trip to Maui I had a question about changing into swimsuits for our scheduled…read moreRoad to Hana tour and sent an email to the company. I received a reply within 30 minutes. The answer was Yes, one can change into swimsuits during lunch before the black sand beach visit and then change out of them at a stop after the waterfall stop to be dry for the ride back to the hotels. A few days before our tour I received an email confirmation that included other useful information, such as bring along swimwear, towels, water shoes and a light jacket for the air conditioned van. I had not considered the A/C and I'm always cold, so that is a very welcome heads-up. On the day of our tour we received texts that the driver was on his way. Pretty close to the scheduled meeting time the van pulled up to our resort. The van was spacious with huge windows. Our tour was full with all 12 passenger seats occupied. Our driver/guide was Travis. He was born and raised in Hana and was a wealth of knowledge about Hana, Maui, and Hawaii. He seemed to be related to all the locals he passed on the road. There was not dull moment. Among the stops along the way were Maui Tropical Plantation for breakfast, Auntie Sandy's Banana Bread stand for those that wished to purchase, Wai'anapanapa State Park (black sand beach, also with a lava tube and a blow hole), Pua'a Ka'a State Wayside Park (usually calm enough to swim but the falls were roaring due to rain earlier in the day), and Ho'okipa Beach with turtles on the beach. Travis was an excellent driver and guide. We got great value from the cost of the excursion. One minor thing did bother us. We are Jewish and were uncomfortable during the praising Jesus sing-along. Regardless, we recommend this tour and especially Travis as a guide.

Pickup was on time although they text us that morning saying the pickup would be 5-10 minutes early. While I appreciated the company's responsiveness in honoring my special seating request, our front (first) row seats on the bus labeled "Alaka'i" had a very narrow window that required us to strain our necks to see the views outside. I noticed that the other three Valley Isle buses on tours that day did not appear to have this issue. I provided the company feedback regarding this seating issue. In our humble opinion, these seats should not be sold. My advice: to avoid the kind of disappointment we experienced, you should always ask for seat reservations and note clearly and specifically to the company that you do not want the first row seats on a bus with seating configuration like Alaka'i's. If you don't and you are picked up last, you will risk getting stuck in these seats from sunrise to sundown. Regarding the amenities, the breakfast was underwhelming, consisting only of a pre-arranged plate of a few pieces of fruit and 2 small muffins. The driver did remind us this was going to be a continental breakfast. There are many versions of continental breakfast but this one truly disappoints. Additionally, the lunch provided, though delicious, was not from the "world-famous" Huli Huli chicken location as the guide led everyone to believe; instead, the guide brought pre-packaged boxes of food from another source. (Please see similar experience from earlier reviews.) My advice: feed yourself before they pick you up or bring something more fulfilling to eat on the bus between breakfast and lunch. Finally, while our driver was incredibly knowledgeable about Maui's culture and history, his demeanor was sometimes overbearing. He frequently called out guests for yawning or dozing off and insisted on undivided attention during his occasional politically biased historical recount. All this made part of the tour experience feel more like a classroom than a tour. He also ridiculed all the not-so-nice reviews he has received. He will probably tell you about this one, too. So buyers beware: your Valley Isle guide could be a bit too much fun for you. :-)

First part was ok. Cory was very chatty and knowledgeable. We stopped to get helmets and jackets ( although the jackets were basically useless and not lined nor kept me warm). Arrived over an hour before sunrise... Cory's part ended and the bike portion started. To not rehash the entire thing, Russ was the leader and although he went over safety rules, he really didn't seem that concerned: big distances between riders, he mixed me up with another rider, chewed me out and told me I wasn't following directions and would not listen to me tell him otherwise;; later he said he couldn't tell us apart and I was the only one not in black/gray; it was a small group of 8 and there was a huge distance between the first two riders; he started off saying that the heaviest people would be the fastest-/ I was the lightest/ smallest and he told me I needed to go faster to catch up; he and the first rider who was a big girl and originally nervous and why she was in front were literally several hundred YARDS ahead of me ( and therefore everyone else); didn't go over speed bump navigation or hand signals until the last stop ( and there were multiple stops); I needed my bike adjusted bc the seat was too low and hurt my knees and he told me it was mostly cruising anyway and ignored my request after I told him I had had 2 knee surgeries.Appeared very condescending to me after the first incident. He also said if the directions aren't followed / he feels a rider is unsafe that he will have them sit in the van and that's the end of their ride---The sad thing was that one of the riders who went down literally less than a minute from the end and was taken away by ambulance..and she was the one he confused with me the very first part and obviously didn't follow his own safety instructions...but even their safety/ 911 protocol was unacceptable-- took them a while to call 911after she went down. Didn't seem like he knew how to handle the situation. Had two of the riders direct traffic using the companies walkie talkies and the batteries died ( aren't they supposed to be fully charged every ride???...)then Russ tells me after that he is certified as a first responder as he takes a 40 hour course yearly. Very pompous and showed no critical decision making skills the entire trip ( I am a physical therapist, 35+ years)....no tip for him. I highly recommend he be fired and welcome the owner to contact me through Yelp. Anthony, the assistant (driver) was very nice and helpful but the scary thing is he said that Russ is their best tour leader :0 Beautiful ride otherwise (5/5) DO NOT BOOK WITH THIS COMPANY
