Picturesque and quaint MUST VISIT bohemian town between Kahului Airport (less than 15 minutes away) and the beginning of the infamous Road to Hana. We happily spent about 2 hours to strolling through the pretty streets, enjoying the mountain views and the variety of stores largely presenting hand crafted local goods. Cute clothing stores, coffee shops, dessert shops and food haunts abound. The handmade ukelele shop is definitely a must stop because it is Hawaii afterall. Just lovely. read more

Paia is a cool little town on the north shore of Maui. It's actually not too far from the airport in Kahului, about a 15-20 minute drive (a little over 7 miles). The most trafficked and touristy part of Paia is the stretch of Hana Highway that passes through town. The highway's intersection with Baldwin Avenue, a three-way stop not far from the coast, is the "town center" (there's a building there that says as much). The town has a reputation of being a surfer/hippie town. This is one of the first or last towns, depending on which direction you're headed, on The Road to Hana. Our family has stopped in Paia, while traveling back and forth on Hana Highway, on a couple different trips to Maui. Here are a handful of highlights: * Ho'okipa Beach Park: https://www.yelp.com/biz/hookipa-beach-park-paia This is a popular surfer beach. Like pretty much all beaches on Maui, it has amazing views. Free parking is located along the beach plus up top at Ho'okipa Lookout (east side of beach, away from Paia). I'm not a surfer and I don't recommend this beach for families, but the views are nice and watching the surfers is fun. * Paia Fish Market: https://www.yelp.com/biz/paia-fish-market-paia-4 One of the best fast-casual seafood restaurants on the island. There are multiple locations. This is the original Paia Fish Market, where it all started in 1989. Try the opakapaka (Hawaiian snapper), sauteed. * Mama's Fish House: https://www.yelp.com/biz/mamas-fish-house-paia-9 For a nicer, relatively high-end meal on Maui, Mama's Fish House is worth experiencing. It's ideal for a special occasion or romantic date night. Open since 1973. * Ululani's Hawaiian Shave Ice: https://www.yelp.com/biz/ululanis-hawaiian-shave-ice-paia-4 The best shave ice brand on the island, in my opinion. I believe this was the sixth of Ululani's now eight locations (opened June 2018). The shave ice at this location in Paia was outstanding, consistent with our experience at the original location in Lahaina. The town center is very walkable. You can park on the street or in various free and paid lots off both Hana Highway and Baldwin Avenue. On our latest trip, we found free street parking on Baldwin, in front of the Lilikoi clothing store: https://www.yelp.com/biz/lilikoi-paia-2. There are several unique restaurants, cafes, and boutique shops in the immediate area. There are gas stations and convenience stores too, in case you need to fill and stock up for The Road to Hana. So many shops, so hot the heat but it's a beautiful day. Great place to find artsy beachy home decor and resort wear. Went into a shop that was closing down, everything 30% off. Stepped into a mesmerizing store that was air conditioned, gentle background music and wonderful whimsical items to decorate a coastal inspired home. If only the taxes I paid to state and federal were still in my pocket, I could be a wannabe Joanna Gaines. Blues of all shades like the ocean are available in this town. There are restaurants, shave ice shops and a plethora of boutique type shops for your shopping pleasure that would help thin out your wallet or max out your credit card real fast- delightful! Yelper RZ's review was pretty spot-on. If you like dirty Berkeley, CA and the vibe there, you might like Paia. I felt like I was teleported somewhere off Telegraph or Shattuck Avenue (and not on the beautiful island of Maui) today. I was eerily uncomfortable the entire time I was there and realized that most of it was the "yuck" vibe. Strange, because based on some publications I read, this was supposed to be Maui's #1 beach town (mmmm I don't see it). I expected to come here and see the real Maui - with lots of native Hawaiians just surfing, hanging out, wind-surfing and for sure LOTS of Aloha and good vibes. I found NONE of that. Stinky, dirty homeless-looking mainland young adults with unkempt blonde dreads who looked & acted like they grew up without parents ... unnecessary bumper-style stickers covering every metal street pole ... many "all local-made" shops that stunk of incense blasting reggae music and run by non-Hawaii natives touting how everything is handmade on the island but there's not one islander near or in the store. Couldn't wait to get in my car and go back to my rental house and look on Yelp to find nice places to go on my last day in the Paia area, so that I could avoid being in downtown Paia. Yuck-O. No. No. Go up the road to Makawao! Totally worth the drive! Charming little upcountry town with charm and warmth and kind islanders. read more

Great place to stop for gas and something to eat prior to tackling the long road to Hana. We had shave ice and then stopped by Flatbread for a brick oven baked pizza. It was delicious! There are lots souvenir stores. Don't go on a Saturday if you can help it. Too many people. read more

Love taking a slow drive through this old surfer hippie town,,, Stop and grab your tiedye shirts and a smoothie....Have to go this way to get to Hana...If youre really a neat freak, better drive straight through....I wouldn't eat here cuz everything is kinda dirty. Paia Maui is a cool little town with plenty of shopping and dining, and beaches too. It's laid back and casual, so leave your formal wear at home. The vibe is beach and new-age, with surf shops, trendy swimwear boutiques and organic food. Easy to spend a few hours or a few days here. You can find a lot of Real Estate offices too. read more

This is my fave beach town which is at a crossroad to Ho'okipa's best windsurfing and up Baldwin Avenue through Upcountry on your way to Haleakala. Little town which garnered quite a few local boutiques, restaurants, coffee and gelato shops. Cafe des Amis serves up some awesome curried and dessert crepes. You want some Southwestern island food, Milagros is your spot! It is about a block or two, so you won't lose time to check out on your way to Hana. Mana Foods grocery on Baldwin Avenue, would have everything you need. A landmark, Charley's Restaurant and Saloon, is still kickin' since 1969. Locally owned Maui Girl swimwear has the best choices in bikinis around! You just have to see for yourself!!! read more

Paia (and Haiku) - my favorite place to hang out in Maui. It's like being in Marin County - cute shops, awesome organic grocery, loads of delicious restaurants and a very laid back air. There are tons of little vacation rentals in the area so if you have to pick a place for a week in Maui, try this area - it's far enough "away" but still has amenities and is pretty central to travel around the island. read more

Apparently this is where all the haoles live...the houses are definitely more of what you'd expect living on the mainland in comparison to some of the more rural areas on Maui They have a great beach in the area that only locals know about so it's not nearly as crowded as the other more touristy beaches...I liked it a lot here...and I could see why it would be an easy transition for a haole! read more

Paia and Haiku are special spots for me so I try to visit the town each time I'm in Maui. I love exploring the town, taking photos and just soaking up the atmosphere. Paia is really cute. Not much has changed with regard to food. I always pass it up to eat in Haiku. BUT...the shops are amazing! Although quite pricey, I always find really unique stuff here. Still a town full of hippies and hipsters. LOTS of barefoot people. This is a new trend I guess? Anyway, I also checked out a buddist temple there and the grounds were gorgeous. I ended up finding a baby bird that was hurt and took it to the booboo zoo about 20 mins outside of Paia. That place was AWESOME! I always make it a point of spending a day in and around Paia. Paia is a somewhat sleepy surf town located on the Hana Highway. For most tourists it serves as a rest stop on their journey to Hana. Others may just pass through to eat at the Paia Fish Market or Mama's Fish House. Some come for the surf and/or sunrise bike tour. It features one of the best surf beaches on Hawaii...JAWS. Ho'okipa is also great for wind, kite, and OG surfers alike. Paia nails that surf town vibe. There are no resorts to stay at, so Ugly Americans need not apply. However, if you are a chill person looking for an equally (if not more) chill spot to spend while in Maui...definitely book a few days here. read more

I love this little town that maybe time forgot -- the shabby chic look, the not-so-pricy restaurants (too bad the fish market was so busy), the retro clothing (ripped off by expensive imitations), the surfers and other island types who walk around on the street. A lovely little town just at the entrance of the Hana Highway. It's quaint and still touristy. They have plenty of stores from local artists selling their wares. Some of my favorite souvenirs were purchased here as they had many unique shops, restaurant (including the famous Mama's Fish House) and beautiful beaches with a more relaxed vibe. read more

Stopped by after coming back down from Haleakala. We were really glad we did. Paia has this reputation for being some small little hippie town but honestly I didn't get that vibe. But maybe I'm just used to these kinds of places ;) But yeah, it was laid back, small and intimate. Most of the shops are on the main street where you'll find shave ice, the fish market, and small shops that sell local artists jewelry and clothing. It'll still get crowded from all the people stopping in on they way to or back from Hana. A great place to just hang out and chill for a half day or so. read more

Simple, cute town that has local restaurants, stores and boutiques. It was lovely strolling down the main two streets that the businesses are located in. Very hipster and life just seems very relaxed in Paia :) if you're visiting Maui, make sure to stop by Paia to get the local experience! We ended up on a quite peaceful beach just 5 minutes of walking down Paia too! For parking - there's only about 2 lots for general parking. Otherwise, there's parking spaces on the sides of the streets as well. read more

So I would rate Paia 2.5 stars, because i suppose if you know what it really was (a trendy, high-endy, beach town) you would love this. But since the town advertises itself as a down-to-earth place (they just love their 'don't feed the hippies signs) I was expecting something else. All the 5 star review are correct, the place is like Marin County in NorCal and East Village, not the Haight in San Francisco. For me this is not I look for in paradise. read more

once your hung out in Paia for any length of time its had not to see some other towns on the island as just tourist traps, lacking any genuine aloha.The Paia area has loads of great place to eat & drink. I think being a little of the main tourist drag forces most business to try that bit harder to provide something quality not just convenience. read more
