I came from out of town to see my in laws and I fell in love with this place. It's a bit of trek from Carlisle but totally with it. It's fun and hip and the owner, Joan, is a sweetheart. I told her that my hubs and I were visiting and she was so kind. She told us about the history of the pen shoppe and showed us around. I absolutely loved it. This place is what i would call creative and beautiful chaos. Its cluttered with the magic of different pens and writing utensils including notebooks, pens, inks and novelty items. I got big into fountain pens and notebooks many moons ago, thanks to a best friend but I've always loved to write so this place was heaven to me. I love reading all the fun little interesting artifacts, looking at all the pens and everything else. I wish I had more time there. The prices were very decent and I ended up going coming with a Platinum Plaisir (f) (if you know you know....) a converter, a t-shirt and a hodge podge of stickers -- ugh, just love....I really felt at home here because I felt so "in my element". Anyways, I digress. As a whole, visiting here was so much fun! Joan also took a picture of us so she could display it on her changing photo album of her customers that have been going to the store for years. It was a sweet gesture. This shop has been in business for over 25 years, and you can really feel the history and passion behind it. I had so much fun browsing--there were so many different types of pens, shapes, and quality levels to explore. Even if you're not specifically shopping for something, it's a really interesting place to look around. I actually didn't plan on stopping in and wasn't even sure it would be open based on the time I arrived, but I'm so glad it was. The owner was incredibly kind, helpful, and knowledgeable, which made the experience even better. I ended up purchasing a pencil and a seal, and I'll definitely be back--this would be a great place to find a thoughtful, high-quality gift (especially for something like Father's Day). Also, a really cool bonus: there's an Airbnb located on the second floor, which adds to the charm of the space.

The husband of this family owned business does amazing work, and me coming up from Virginia, what he does is not found many places on the east coast. Sadly the wheels did not seem to be good candidates for a return to use. What I didn't expect was the converted 1810 home turned into a weaving mecca called Red Stone Glen. Owner Sarah and her dad are nationally known weavers and fiber artists, and they share their home with her woodworker husband and their young daughters as well as weaving classrooms, and a fiber arts store where I dropped a couple hundred dollars. The large property includes the neighboring house just down the road where there is a retreat center, classrooms and a spinning wheel mini warehouse! The retreat house includes a pool and lots of scenic relaxation areas for those who come to spend a few days or weeks learning or producing fiber arts. They hold a fiber festival open house in June each year and other events. Who would think out in the woods of York County, Pennsylvania is two properties and a family dedicated to preserving fiber arts of all kinds, particularly spinning and weaving. I was surprised to learn this business is well known and appreciated by fiber artists the world over. While I could not get my wheels repaired to meet my needs, I feel compelled to support this unique business just 15 minutes from the Harrisburg airport but hidden in creative solitude.

Since I "liked" their page I've been meaning to check them out. It took me awhile but finally got there last Friday night for a book reading/crafting event for kids for $5 I knew a little about the business and what they offered from Facebook but didn't really understand the concept till I was there. You can craft here a number of ways. On their walls they have tons of completed projects that can be customized just for you. Mainly the trendy graphic signs and such. For a fee they provide all the supplies, crafting space, and additional materials (glues, etc) as well as instruction. For graphic signs you pick from their enormous supply of specialty papers and they'll cut out the design on their circuit machine, provide instruction than you complete the project. You can customize the print, size, font, papers, and the backboard. You *may* even be able to bring your own design to them to see if it's something they can do. The crafting space is spacious and cozy - the perfect space to connect with friends and socialize while you craft. An added bonus is they do the clean up! While the projects on display are not for sale they are priced so you know how much it will cost to make. While I did feel the prices were the same or higher than buying the project premade from Etsy (for example) the experience and girls night out would make up for it. In addition to crafting on your own they offer workshops for specific projects ranging from graphic signs to string art - both for adults and children. The event we attended was a few days before Christmas. The children were encouraged to come in their jammies to hear a Christmas story, drink hot cocoa, than craft a wooden ornament. All for only $5! Our girls loved the experience and as grandparents we enjoyed that the painting, glue, and mess wasn't in our house! We'll definitely be back to craft some more.
