They're open for longer, they can sell their product at a lower price, and it's just more convenient getting your groceries done all in one place. But let me tell you this - there's no substitute for quality, and there's no substitute for fresh, organic fruit and vegetables. I started shopping here soon after they opened, and after one visit I was hooked. The fruit tastes better, the vegetables are better to cook with, and the variety is more varied than that of any supermarket. And, to my surprise, the prices are actually lower (considering the supermarkets aren't trying to get rid of stock, in which case it's not that fresh anymore anyway). On top of having a huge choice of fruits and vegetables to choose from, Simply Fresh Fruiterer also stocks organic yoghurts, coffee, sweets, and pasta sauces. The store clerks are always incredibly friendly and informative of their produce, and the sensation of being able to pick fruit from a fresh batch and being surrounded by colour is something that's taken for granted. It's not something that most would consider getting excited about, but I'm a simple man with simple pleasures!

They usually have a special each week of an extraordinary low price, so watch my tweets on a Sunday morning for 2 punnets of blueberries for $4! Tip: There's a free coffee machine inside. It's not going to satisfy a connoisseur, but it'll get you through a caffine craving. Please remember your own bags - the produce won't fight on the ride home if they're together. I completely understand for all those baby spinach/lettuce leaf types, but why would you put bananas in a plastic bag? #ThinkGreen

This Foodland is one of three that are embracing organic produce, wider range of locally sourced produce and less demanding impulse buys. I will generally source most of my shopping from farmers markets and local butchers but for my main shop for everything I will come here to get all those other daily needs. I can't tell you how happy it makes me to support a local business but I do have a tendency to pat myself on the back regularly :)

So, to hear so many people rave about Foodland means they must be doing something right. Friends that live in Norwood think they have the best Foodland. Same with those living in Mitcham. I'm a huge fan of my local at Frewville and this is my review, so I can say wholeheartedly, I think Frewville tops them all! I've been shopping here for six years and drop in two to three times a week. It had a major renovation in 2011 which has turned it from a daggy site with a great selection of produce, to a sensational, modern site with an array of quality products and a strong focus on local producers. Foodland are big supporters of South Australian products and offer a great range. The foodies I know will often shop here if they can't make it to Grote Street (or can't face the parking hassles) and I know why. I've picked up stuff here that I've never seen in a Woollies or Coles, such as Persian fairy floss or yiros meat in the freezer section. There's even an entire corner at the entrance of the store dedicated to fine foods. The small goods and cheeses available rival the Central Markets (big call, I know, but I stand by it) and there is a dedicated organic fruit and vege stand at the entrance. The staff always have a great attitude and are of all ages and give the impression they genuinely enjoy their job. With the renovation they've introduced a mini cafe at the entrance that offers espresso coffee, lunch items (rolls, wraps etc) and biscuits and cakes. There are a few tables near the checkouts and despite their odd position, there is almost always someone sitting at one of them sipping a coffee or having a bite to eat as I leave. On the odd occasion when a special is too good to forgo, I'll slip over to the nearby Woollies at Arkaba, but generally, you'll find me here, supporting a local company who supports local small business.

It is only a supermarket of Asian grocery, but it is jam packed with everything you need and the hours are not set in stone, though they favour the earlier part of the day - sometimes the owners are open at five in the morning some times a little later. There is all the usual stuff, cock, chili, pepper, chicken, duck, soups and noodles, oils, flours, frozen flour goods; everything you require for Chinese cooking or pretty much any Asian cooking. Fresh vegetables and lots of character. Possibly slightly cheaper for you if you come from one of the Asian countries. I know, that seems rather odd doesn't it, but I do think there's a discount on some greens if you know the language let me put it that way. I almost always would pop in here to get my odds and ends for laksa and noodle soups or stir fry because it is not as busy as most of the other Asian groceries around, and yet they do have a steady flow of customers - not so many tourists I think!

It does help if you speak Cantonese or Mandarin, but the owners are equally conversant in English. Rows of fresh greens and melons, noodles, and chinese sausages, aswell as spices and condiments; and around at the far end, all the kitchen utensils you might want for your own dinner party experience. There is even a wall selection of Asian DVDs if it tickles your fancy. Yue Kee's is cheaper than the other Chinatown highstreet supermarkets and as mentioned in a previous review, not as busy. But I'll tell you why. Their main customers are actually the many restaurants in and outside of Chinatown. They get up very early in the morning, buy in bulk and deliver goods in their bright yellow van. If you stand around long enough you will see local restaurant owners popping in for those last minute ingredients before they open up shop. Quality goods at very good prices. Treat it as your own wholesalers, as much of Gouger Street already does. Would definitely recommend this place seeing as I'm here at least once a week to refill.

Anywho, Fruita Bella is the larger of two fruit and veg stores at Marden and stocks everything you would normally find at such a store. I more often than not grab my healthiness from here rather than the supermarket because it is generally cheaper and they often stock some herbs and varieties of veg that aren't the most common. The selection of Mushrooms is also pretty good and they go really well with the fat, juicy Porterhouse that I buy from the butcher next door! Sometimes, if you are lucky, they have super specials that beat the pants off of supermarket prices, but these are pretty unpredictable.

It's almost as good as going to the markets and the prices are very reasonable, riding between market and supermarket dollar values. But, I sometimes wonder whether they have more people rostered on than what they need? It's never that busy that they need three people working. It's a very small store. My only concern about this store is the variety. I think that if you are going to be a great Fruit & Veg store you should stock items that are a little more ethnic and unusual. Especially if your neighbour is a supermarket that does not stock unusual veggies. Last time I visited here I was on the search for Thai Basil, which I actually don't think that is so unusual. Foodland didn't stock it, so I naturally thought the Fruit & Veg store next door would sell it. But, no they didn't. In fact, the herb selection was quite small. They are consistently more expensive, and I think that if I am paying a much higher price for my fruit and veg, I want it to be organic. I would be more likely to come here for cheese, because for that I'll pay a little more and get something good quality. I suppose it's all about your priorities, and this doesn't reflect very well on mine. Appealing to the local Italian community, alongside the cheeses is a nice range of cured meats, biscotti, jams and preserves and other fine dairy foods. It's a lovely little shop in terms of quality and range, and I have not been able to fault the fresh food I've bought here.

Set in the heart of Norwood shopping district and with a huge fan base, this groceries store has everything to offer. You are greeted at the entry by the large Deli section, fully stocked with the most amazing cheeses, meats, salads, roast chickens and seafood. All the produce is fresh and ready to be packaged up for you to take home. The staffs in the deli section are always busy! You will need to reach for a number as I almost guarantee you will need to wait your turn. They are happy for you to try different sliced meats and olives, so do not hesitate to ask to assist with your decision. As for the fruit and veg, it is generally well priced and fresh. You will find a good organic produce section here with a larger than normal. The fruit and veg are always arranged quite neatly and during the busy periods you will find staff constantly re-stocking. Like most Romeo Foodlands, you will find a very diverse range of products from around the world and a lot of locally sourced goods. They are very South Australian proud and I have found the most amazing local products here. One thing to mention about this store is the amazing bakery section. The bread, rolls, pastries and cakes are all of very high quality and are baked daily. You will find all different types of sourdoughs, rye, baguettes, pizzas, loafs, etc... There are plenty of rooms between the rows, it's big and open, and there's a good variety of interesting fruit and veg options. I can't say I bothered comparing prices, but I dare say they do creep up a bit here. I don't shop here often, and I wouldn't go out of my way to, but I do enjoy a good brose of the fruit & veg.
