    Campsite 23

I stayed here in April 2012 after looking for a lower elevation campsite to stay at and absolutely adored Potwisha. Per Lauren T's review, I wanted to stay at site 23 and it was a very good choice. Being the first site on the campgrounds, I only had one neighbor on one side and open ground on my other, with the Kaweah river running peacefully behind me. The campgrounds were clean and nicely maintained. The park rangers were also very friendly and had lots of great recommendations for hikes to go on, etc. There is also a great little walk across the street from the campgrounds that will take you to the river, a cool old bridge, some Native American drawings, etc. I am looking forward to my next stay here again this spring. Since it is lower elevation, there are no big sequoias in the area, just lots of nice oak trees. That's the only reason I don't give it 5 stars. Other than that, I highly recommend it for a wonderful relaxing time!

I have no idea why this place has such low stars!! I loved it the staff was amazing and helpful especially Nancy and her husband they made my Mother's Day very special! It is a small quiet and clean campground, I'm an avid camper and I've been to some crappy campsites this one is by far my fave. I will go back over and over again!

We recently stayed at potwisha for three days and it was amazing. Went during spring first week of April and seen seven deer sleeping in the camp ground it was amazing. Didn't see any bears or other animals. The weather was perfect and surrounding neighbors were friendly. The bathrooms were super clean. We stopped at another campground I think buck eye flats and the bathrooms where disgusting. I will for sure stay here again.

My friends and I camped at Potwisha in April 2004 and again in April 2009. It's a great place, especially in the spring when the weather is nice and it's less crowded. Its a small campground, only 40 or so sites, quiet and spacious. Try to get a site that is along the edge because they are much larger. Site 23 in particular is awesome, a very short walk from the river. There is also another site on the other side of the grounds that features a gigantic rock which can fit at least 10 people hanging out on top of it. Potwisha is also close to some really great hikes. Speaking of hikes, the last time we were here I had a dehydration/recreational drug induced freak-out while on a hike and the rangers were really cool about it. They made sure I was ok and were really understanding when I'm sure they could have been dicks and reprimanded me or involved the authorities. Yeah...no more wacky snacks for me.

But it was stocked with toilet paper. Other than that the campgrounds was great. I love the fact the market is reasonably priced. They have a Cafe, showers, cleaner restrooms, and a laundry facility. The campsite was beautiful. Not too many bugs. Everywhere you looked it was beautiful. There's lots of campsites nearby but not too close. Our campsite was 202, right behind the large rock and pretty close to the river. It was nice hearing the rush of water throughout the day. The bathroom was close enough except for during the the night. Knowing that bears are in the area made it really scary going in the middle of the night. Wear a headlamp, it's much better than a flashlight. The shuttle will come inside the campgrounds and pick you up near the restrooms in the main parking lot. There are a few trails for hiking (which we didn't have time to do). I do recommend if traveling with another family to work out the food situation because there's only one bear box per site. One large cooler can fir or two smaller ones. One large and one small cooler will not fit in the box. ALL food, snack, even perfume, & body spry should be put into the bear box.

It'll always be a gamble, so if you're planning to camp for the weekend, come EARLY to try and net a site. I stayed in site #2, which is stupidly large in comparison to the other sites. There are spots for 2 cars, and we even had our own private trail leading to a babbling river. There is potable water, clean bathrooms, and even a few deer sightings! For $23 a night, we were living large. If you forgot anything, there is a market by Glacier Lodge a mile up the road selling the essentials (and apparently, BBQ on Saturdays). However, it was our camp hosts, David and Takota, who really made the stay special. David gave us a personal tour of the grounds, and we got to see his "Twisted Forest," his crystal collection, and he pointed us towards some natural hot springs! We even got his mixtape...aka CDs of the local radio show he hosts...that proved to be awesome to listen to on the drive down. Takota is David's very cute giant dog pal. I'm definitely looking forward to coming back in the Fall season to witness the color change!

I…read morehave a personal rule: I only count a national park as "visited" if I actually spend time there, hike or walk through it, and truly experience it. On this trip, we visited 14 national parks, and Sequoia National Park was one of the absolute highlights. The drive into the park is spectacular. Climbing from the valley into the Sierra Nevada, the scenery changes with every curve of the road until suddenly you find yourself surrounded by forests of giant sequoias. It is an unforgettable entrance and sets the stage for everything that follows. We stayed between Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks and dedicated five full days to exploring both. It was the perfect amount of time because every day brought new trails, new views, and another reason to stop in amazement. Of course, we visited the famous groves, including General Sherman, the largest tree on Earth by volume. Even though these areas are popular, we purposely visited before schools were out for the summer and avoided weekends, so the crowds were very manageable. Even so, my favorite hikes were the quieter ones, where there were fewer people and it felt like I had the forest almost to myself. There is something deeply humbling about standing among these giants. Some of these trees have been alive for more than 2,000 years. They were already ancient long before our country even existed. I found myself slowing down, placing my hand on their massive trunks, sitting quietly, and simply absorbing the peace of the forest. Whether or not trees have energy is up to each person to decide, but I certainly left feeling calmer, smaller, and full of wonder. Beyond the giant sequoias, the park offers spectacular granite cliffs, rushing rivers, alpine meadows, waterfalls, and an incredible variety of wildlife. Every trail seemed to reveal something different, making each hike feel like its own adventure. Sequoia National Park is more than just a place to check off a list. It is a place to slow down, look up, breathe deeply, and remember just how extraordinary nature can be. If you have the time, don't rush through it. Spend several days exploring both Sequoia and neighboring Kings Canyon. The giant trees may be the stars of the park, but the entire landscape is magnificent. This is one of those parks that stays with you long after you leave.

The only con right now is the fire restriction in effect for the whole area, so that means NO campfires (I got a Campfire Permit beforehand, which is required, but was not inspected). It's a very shady campground during the day, and it gets pretty chilly at night, not to mention very dark.
