El Quinto Sol was such a pleasant surprise to find in Laredo. As an all-vegetarian restaurant, it…read moreimmediately stood out to me because I don't always expect to find places like this outside of larger metro areas. But this visit reminded me that smaller cities can have really diverse, inclusive, and thoughtful food scenes too. The menu has so much to choose from. There are plenty of classic plant-based American-style dishes, but what I loved most was the large selection of Hispanic-inspired options, including tacos, burrito bowls, and other dishes that felt connected to the region. I ordered the fishless tacos, which came with three tacos filled with soy-based "fish," purple cabbage, avocado, and chipotle sauce, served with a bowl of lentil soup. It was a massive and very filling meal, especially with the protein, avocado, and soup. The space itself was clean, spacious, and inviting without being overdone. It was pretty busy when I went for lunch on a Friday, which was great to see. They also brought out a small complimentary appetizer with chips, nopales, spicy tomato salsa, and a sprinkle of cheese, which was a fun and flavorful start to the meal. Needless to say, I couldn't finish everything. I ate the tacos but had to leave some of the lentil soup because it was just so much food. They also have frozen yogurt and desserts, plus an area with packaged products you can buy to take home. I even noticed advertisements for El Quinto Sol at the airport, so it seems like they're a well-known local staple. I'm really glad a restaurant that caters to vegetarian diets is thriving in the community, and I think it's a huge asset to Laredo.

The yogurt has that perfect level of tartness that pairs so well with the sweet toppings. I chose cajeta, banana, and coconut. It was perfect. My complaint is that it's not served with a lid or anything to keep the goodies from falling all over your lap.

I'll start off by saying the main advantage and appeal of this restaurant is its proximity to the…read moreTesla superchargers. I've been there three times now, and will probably continue to come in the future for a quick lunch while I'm charging. The decor is cute and service is top notch. I've always been helped very quickly in the food has come out quick even when busy. The lack of five stars is due to the paninis. The bread seems average and didn't have as good of a crust as you normally expect with paninis. I ordered the vegetarian and the sandwich fell apart. It was very wet, probably from the mushrooms, and the flavor of thyme or rosemary overpowered any other flavors. I will say that the soups are delicious, perfectly creamy and delicious. Next time i come back and try the crepes which according to the reviews shows a bit more promise!

The decor is pretty and has some French style. The service was friendly and helpful. But the food…read moredidn't strike me as French. I had a Poblano sandwich which was fine, but seemed more Mexico than France. My latte was weak and small. The salad bar looked OK, but not my style of selections. It's not really a Patisserie with fancy desserts or a café, but it is a sandwich shop that would probably do a good job catering an afternoon tea type of event. On the other hand, it's right across the street from the Tesla Supercharger without many other walkable options. So I'd suggest a tea and a light sandwich or veggie soup.
