I am thoroughly impressed with the coaches at Paragon. My son has been a student now for two months, and the changes I've been in his personality have been amazing. Paragon has been great! I started with no previous BJJ or martial arts background and the trainers and community there really make every effort to welcome you. Trying to learn a martial art as a fresh white belt can seem overwhelming but I found everyone at paragon to be really helpful in explaining the basic during technique instruction and sparring matches. They have morning, midday, and evening classes so even with an erratic work schedule I was always able to find sessions to fit into my week. Membership is per month as well, not a yearly contract. You can borrow a Gi from them until you acquire your own if you are new. read more

We have looked everywhere for Jujitsu for our son. We visited alot of places that promised to "turn your son into a man" - um...he was 6 at the time. Some of the places we visited had the coaches yelling and intimidating the children. My son is very sweet and shy- we wanted him to learn to protect himself, and he's the last one to have obedience issues. With that said, we LOVE LOVE LOVE the coaches at Paragon. They are very passionate about teaching the children and are very patient. My son is slowly coming out of his shell and really enjoys the classes. The classes are also very well split between warm ups, instructions, and a game at the end. Perfect for these short attention span kids. When my little girl is 4, we will definitely be signing her up- we are in for the long haul :-) read more

Visiting from out of town, I dropped in to Paragon's 11:30 BJJ class yesterday for a class led by Coach Jose, one of the school's brown belts. I travel somewhat frequently for work, so finding a school to drop in at becomes important to keep my training moving forward. The class I attended focused on a tight arm lock progression with plenty of time to drill each version. We ended with half an hour of sparring. Very nice looking and clean training facility fully equipped with cardio machines, weights, clean mat space, heavy bags, etc, AND men & women's changing and showering rooms. I went there for the free boot camp class and was impressed by the facility and the experience of the instructor. I particularly appreciated TJ's emphasis on form, and making the various exercises relevant to whatever sports you're into. I can't wait for the next session! I had a business trip to Austin and reached out to Paragon BJJ Austin about dropping in for a class. Robert Dembeck, the owner, answered the phone and was very friendly. He immediately invited me to come train. The next day, I attended the noon class (which Robert was teaching) and was impressed with the techniques he had to show. The school has a positive vibe and his students were all very respectful. I felt safe and welcomed. I travel all over the country and train BJJ wherever I go. I must say that Paragon BJJ Austin is one of the best academies I've trained at. After class, Robert took extra time to help me with my game and gave me all sorts of tips. Fantastic gym. I've trained at 3-4 gyms over my jiu jitsu career and this one takes the cake. Coach Jose and coach Robert are both incredible teachers. Everyone here is very respectful and there to learn. I'm not an expert by any means but I noticed at least 4-5 black belts train here regularly along with tons of purple and brown. This is my second time visiting Paragon while I was in Austin. These guys are so hospitable and welcoming, including the students. Their are lions in this school as well and I enjoyed rolling with all the advanced students! I took the advanced class and enjoyed the format as it is similar to my BJJ school's format in New York. 1. Warm up 2. drilling 3. instruction 4. drilling 5. sparring. Seems like they like to push cardio here, which I think is great to get into the fight mindset for competitions. Of course, you have the option to sit out of rolling sessions, if it becomes too much for you. Mind you, I am only referring to my experience in the advanced classes and not the fundamentals classes. The format and intensity may be different in the fundamentals classes. The friendliness/great instruction and emphasis on live sparring keeps me coming back. Also, it was pretty cool and an honor to get a welcome to the school by having the black belt teachers ask me to roll! read more

If you are looking for a great place to train in Austin, this is it. While visiting Austin for a conference we wanted to get some jiu jitsu training in and decided to try out Paragon because some of our training partners back home had trained with one of Paragon's instructors. When walking into the gym the owner was immediately very welcoming and showed us around when we told him we were visiting and were looking to get some training in. The other students were also very nice so we felt right at home. The training itself was very good with high quality instruction. Rolling with the other students was also great! Hard work but everyone is very respectful, no egos and clearly the idea is that everyone is there to help each other get better. Right after class the mats were cleaned, so you know every time you come in you get to work out on clean mats. We couldn't get enough and came back 3 days in a row. I was in Austin, TX for work and I had the opportunity to drop in for a No-Gi class at Paragon Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Austin. The facility was great and the students and instructors were welcoming and friendly. I had the opportunity to roll with several students and instructor Mike Harmon and they all used great control and technique in sparring. Mike even offered to let me borrow a spare Gi to take the next class. I was traveling to Austin for work and was looking for a BJJ school in which I could train during my stay. I travel a lot and finding a decent school being unfamiliar to the area is pretty nerve wracking. Between excessive mat fees and strange school cultures, you never know what you're going to get. Paragon surpassed all my expectations. The owner did not charge me a mat fee...he just wanted me to have good training. When I arrived, I was pleasantly surprised by the hospitality shown by Robert. As a female, especially, walking into a new academy can be intimidating. He quickly showed me to the changing area and I was quickly on the mat for class. The instruction was great and the students made me feel so welcome. I have not had this experience at any other school where I have travelled. When I return to Austin, I will definitely come back. If you are new to BJJ or very experienced Paragon is a great place to be. They offer a week free and have the nicest facilities I have seen. There are showers in the women's and men's locker rooms for convenience and they offer pretty much everything you could want. BJJ with three black belts, Judo with a third degree black belt, wrestling with CJ Ortega, and kickboxing with Nick "the ghost" Gonzales. I travel a lot and am always looking for places to train while on the road. A friend-of-a-friend recommended Paragon during a recent trip to Austin, and I have been thanking him ever since. The owner and coach Robert was very helpful getting me set up, and took a moment before class to introduce me to the group (nice touch). The lunch time class had around 16 people in it, and there was a range from white to brown belts. The warm up was pretty standard (jogging, bear crawls, shrimping, squats, push ups, etc.), then we moved on to techniques. We worked on some half-guard, and I really liked Robert's approach. He started off with some very basic moves, and gradually progressed to much more advanced ones - and all in the space of 1/2 hour. While drilling, Robert gave a lot of individualized attention which was important as I got stuck a couple of times. Then, it was time to roll, and I had partners the full range of the room (white to brown belt). The rounds were solid, and I was able to get some really good training. I had a great time, was able to train hard (without killing myself), Robert was extremely helpful, and his students were very welcoming. I will definitely be back the next time I am in Austin! read more

I spent many years searching for the perfect gym to train martial arts in Austin and from day one I knew Paragon was that place. I am a woman who takes training seriously, and I was immediately made to feel welcome by the owner, coaches, and other students at Paragon. This was very different from my experiences at other gyms where the training either was not up to par with my standards of training or I was not taken seriously or treated respectfully as a woman walking into a martial arts gym. I take kickboxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and wrestling classes, and my 7-year old daughter takes kid's BJJ. The instructors are all extremely talented and technical in their respective sports as well as excellent teachers for all levels of training. I walked into the gym knowing nothing about BJJ and my coaches and teammates have all worked with me to help me learn from scratch. The kid's classes are wonderful and have served to give my daughter confidence, a new way to be physically active, and of course a means of having fun! Training is taken seriously here, but my instructors and teammates accomodate for all levels. I have never been treated with anything other than the utmost respect by my male team mates at Paragon. Once again, this is so different from my experiences at gyms in general, where I usually feel as if I am some kind of main attraction to the male members. Paragon is also kept spic 'N span clean, which is very important considering the kinds of things that can grow on surfaces in gyms.
