    Team Paragon!

Best place to learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Austin! Great instructors and a really fun atmosphere. Everyone here is very warming and willing to teach each other. All egos left at the door! They offer a week of free training. Another plus is that they have both men and women's showers!

I am thoroughly impressed with the coaches at Paragon. My son has been a student now for two months, and the changes I've been in his personality have been amazing. This once shy kid is now a social butterfly. He's much more active, healthy and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is all he talks about. I cannot thank Coach Darrin and Coach Jose for the hard work and encouragement they give each kid. Any parent is wise to enroll their child into Paragon's program :) As for me, I'll be trying out their kickboxing class very soon. Here's hoping it's kicks my butt back into supreme shape!

After training at a different place for a few years after I moved to Austin I made the switch in 2011 and haven't looked back since. This is a place with exceptional instructors with focus and emphasis on good technique and hard work. Definitely worth the money that you pay for monthly dues! If you already training in bjj and looking for a different place to train or thinking about getting started then definitely give paragon a try!

Best gym in Austin. Laid back, friendly, and a very technical room. Great kids program as well.

My complaints went unheard. I quit and over a year's time, several others quit too. They only removed him after he bit someone in sparring. Then he just went to the Humaita in Cedar Park, where I was attending the veteran training days because I'm a veteran with PTSD, but he would just show up to those classes too even though he wasn't a veteran. He would do it to harass me. So I quit going there too. Finally he was kicked out of there 6-12 months later. I cannot support a school that doesn't take harassment or threats of abuse from their members seriously. Creig is still in the community and he fights amateurs Muay Thai at local bars. I cannot recommend this school because of their behavior in this matter.

Gym - the mats are very clean and everyone is very methodical about being clean for others. Instructors - incredible instruction from a host of black belts who are humble, knowledgeable, and wanting to share the benefits of BJJ with anyone who wants to learn. Each has a different teaching style and experiences but all with the same goal helping others get better. Classmates and community - this is a gym of hard working people who are putting in the work to become a better version of themselves. Humble, intentional, focused and fun is the vibe in the classes. It's very welcoming to newcomers with free beginners classes. Kids - my kids have been attending and they have enjoyed learning how to move their bodies, have learned self discipline, and focus. They also have gained a confidence in knowing how to protect themselves. The coaching for the kids is professional and fun.

I love this place. I came with the intention of just trying it out as one in a long line of places…read moreI had scouted out. I was so impressed I barely tried anything else on the list. The mats are the nicest mats I have ever seen, anywhere. I went and looked them up recently, they are RESILITE mats. I found this: http://www.tothsports.com/pdfs/Wrestling-Resilite-Dollamur.pdf Basically they kick ass. On top of that, I've never seen a school so studious about cleaning the mats. So they're also the cleanest mats. Further, while the space isn't huge (though it has never felt insufficient), the A/C is PHENOMENAL. It's not something you immediately think about, but wow--what a difference it makes to not feel like you're in a sauna, only the moisture in the air is the sweat of everyone else in the room. So, the environment is awesome. On top of that, you get your own "swipey thingie" (an rfid keychain that allows you to access the building) that just *feels* cool. (No actual benefit, haha.) But those are things that didn't register right away as the advantages they were. I was too distracted by the quality instruction. Dave Thomas is a brilliant technician. He's won Silver for his weight class at the Pan Ams, something I found out by looking really deeply into his website, and you can really tell why when you roll with him--everything is so careful, so precise, and so his strength is magnified. Further, his understanding of what he is doing--something he has obviously spent a great deal of time cultivating--is intense. The man is not just a doer, but a teacher, and that is a different skill entirely. Something I've never heard him put any emphasis on is a website he built some time ago: bjjtech.com. The website is good, and useful, and interesting, and worth studying. But I point it out to give a small taste of the mental investment Dave has obviously made into Jiu Jitsu; this man has lived, eaten, and breathed jiu jitsu for years, dwelling on it, dissecting it, and teasing out its subtleties. That investment is something his students benefit from. I have been to many schools with very capable teachers, who just kind of "teach off the top of their head"; and that's fine. But what's off the top of their head, as opposed to built into their instinct, is no where near as accessible to them, and thus the quality of instruction is sub-par. Dave is among the best in this category of skills. As high praise as that is, the highest praise is the quality of human Dave is. Of the nearly 20 BJJ schools in Austin I looked up online, his was the ONLY school that wasn't afraid to list its prices online. That made a first impression. Later, when I called all of these schools, almost none of them would even tell me over the phone, wanted to cajole me to come in first, then we could 'talk' about money. This struck me as car-salesman-ish, and made me uncomfortable. Dave? On the phone, he was the most helpful person I talked to. He gave me advice for looking for a school, and I didn't get a negative feel from him at all. He didn't try to sell me on anything--and that in spite of the fact that he sometimes runs the school at a loss. He pays fairly high rent for his excellent location and amenities, and keeps a fairly small group of students. One gets the feel that he really picks his students carefully, and that those who stay are really shaped by him. He becomes something of a mentor. His strength of identity and character show not just in the mats, but anytime you talk to him... You can just feel his warmth, sincerity, honesty, wisdom. That matters more than anything. Everything else is a bonus. I've decided to stick around. It's been several months now, and I can feel my jiu jitsu improving immensely from his influence. Try him out. You won't regret it.

Austin Jiu-Jitsu saved my life. Well, maybe not literally, but the workout along with eating right…read morehas allowed me to drop over 80 pounds (not to mention the six pants sizes), and that has added years to my life. I haven't been this healthy since college (pre-beer in any case). The location itself is unassuming, but the training is hardcore. One of the best things is the no attitudes policy. When you walk in expect a greeting and a handshake. You don't have to worry about some neanderthal trying to tear your head off (there are people of every size and weight class in the gym), and all egos are checked at the door. If you are looking for BJJ in Austin, at least check it out. I did, and 4 years later I'm still going back to sweat out my stress.

One…read moreof the ladies training there (the amazing Lex) actually beat me at a jiu jitsu tournament. We hit it off while competing and became friends through that experience, which says a lot about the kind of supportive, women-forward culture that exists at The Void. When I shared that I was looking for a new school, she invited me to come try out. On my first day, Mars (the owner) gave me a full walkthrough of the facility. The school is located inside a larger facility that includes showers, a full workout gym, a sauna, and more. The fact that The Void members have access to all of these amenities honestly blew my mind. All of the perks, along with the schedule and membership details, are clearly laid out on their website. I also really appreciated that there is no contract and that pricing is very affordable, especially for downtown Austin. I tried MMA sparring, jiu jitsu, and kickboxing. Jiu jitsu is primarily no gi, but you can bring a gi if you want. Every coach I interacted with was knowledgeable, respectful, and patient. Any time I had concerns around safety or technique, they listened and offered modifications when needed. As a woman training in combat sports, this made me feel genuinely respected and well taken care of. On the MMA and kickboxing side, it's worth noting that they have heavy bags in house. The kickboxing classes (led by Christian) also had a strong women presence which I loved. There is no uniform requirement for any of the classes, so you have a lot of flexibility with what to wear. I recommend wearing comfortable clothing and bringing gloves and shin pads if it's your first time. They also have a in house videographer and photographer who captures amazing photos and videos. You can check out his work on Instagram at @donpablo.arw !! I live up north in the suburbs about 30 to 40 minutes away so if it were not for the distance, I would have signed up in a heartbeat. I made a lot of friends in the short time I spent at The Void, and that really speaks to the training environment and culture they have built. The location itself is great with plenty of parking. There is cold water available, a vending machine nearby, and very clean bathrooms. Mars was communicative, and since I tried out during a weird time with the holidays, I was especially grateful for their generosity in allowing me to train through the end of the month. The Void also hosts free community events, such as the upcoming Couple's Self Defense Date Night. All of their information can be found on their website or Instagram at @thevoidmartialarts. I highly recommend The Void to anyone interested in jiu jitsu or MMA in the downtown Austin area!

This class has been wonderful for my son, and there are several areas where I think this school truly excels. I find that Master Um truly teaches discipline by example: he is very calm and respectful in his interactions with the kids, and encourages them to offer their best behavior. His positive attitude helps shape the eagerness and attention the students bring to class. In addition, the classes have a handful of fantastic youth serving as student instructors. These older students are all overwhelmingly supportive and set a wonderful example for the younger crop. As far as belt progression, the syllabus for each rank is clearly communicated to the students, and they are always aware of what skills they need to learn before being eligible for belt testing. While beginner to advanced belts might be in the same class, Master Um partners students in a way that each can benefit from grappling with a parter of similar skill and weight. In addition, several drills and exercises are performed to provide the necessary athletic basis for the sport. Classes are small, and all students get the attention of their teacher. We left a traditional karate school to join Master Martial Arts, and I am so grateful we did. Master Um provides a very positive learning environment, and ample opportunities to develop the skills and conduct for the martial art of your choice. Definitely give them a chance to train you (adult classes! yes!) or your child.
