Pure Jiu Jitsu! Professor Alexandre is a Jedi. Yet words cannot convey the full measure of professionalism and humility that he exhibits with his students. From kids to adults he remains consistent, patient and kind. He is a rare individual. You don't expect a guy ranked #6 in the world to be so brutally gentle. LOL. I thought I was good. We recently signed our son up here and have loved the place from day 1. The woman who handles the information and registration is fantastic. Very helpful. Very thoughtful and genuine. We also like the instructors. Not only are they very good at what they do but there are many of them involved with the kids class. And that's what I think differentiates this place. While the main instructor leads the lessons there are like 4 or 5 other instructors moving about making sure the kids have the assistance while they practice the drills. I cannot say enough good things about Gracie Barra South Austin. My two sons have been going there for close to 2 years and their coaching team is top-notch. Coach Lance was there on my older son's first day when he was beyond nervous (tears, shakes...you name it) to get on the mat. Coach Lance was a calming force, patient and attentive. The rest is history. Both of my sons have formed a special bond with Coach Lance and work very hard to make him proud. He knows what they need as far as attention, care and guidance. He really is a bright spot in their day and our whole family couldn't be more grateful for him. Training several young children on a technical sport would be extremely challenging for most people but Coach Lance makes it look fun. He is definitely a natural at it and the kids feel his positive energy each day. I have been in martial arts for most of my life. My family even owns a Tae Kwon Do school. In all of my nearly 20 years involved in martial arts, both as a student and from a business standpoint, I have never been to a school this good. The instructor, Professor Dande (pronounced "Dun-jee"), is the kindest, most humblest instructor I have ever met. Not only is he certified BAMF (I believe he's ranked #4 in the world at his weight), but he gives great, clear instruction, along with practical examples. He seems to honestly care for his students. Having just moved here from Southern California (where there was a martial arts school on every corner), I was a little surprised at how few Jiu Jitsu schools are in south Austin. However, my son has been training here since October and we couldn't be happier. We looked at several schools locally and are so pleased with our decision. Everyone from the staff, teachers, students and parents are super nice. The teachers are very encouraging while continuing to instilling discipline. I turned up a few minutes before class, and the instructors welcomed me, handed me a gi, and made me feel at home. The instruction itself was great, as were the facilities and other students. Gracie Barra East Austin (they just moved to a larger space) offers top notch BJJ instruction. I've tried 3 other BJJ gyms and like these guys best. Their Fundamentals program was great for a beginner like me - I learned a tremendous amount every class. Not only is the curriculum well designed for beginners, but the instructors take are very attentive, helping you to correct mistakes in form. They want to make sure you develop good technique early. The advanced classes are an intense workout, with some technique work and lots of friendly sparring. The culture here is A+. Everyone is friendly and wants to help you improve. From a consumer and client perspective, this school is top notch because as a student you know you're level of progression, attendance,and lesson plan, by way of attendance card and class curriculum. Every class is run in an organized and professional manner where thorough explanation is provided for everyone to understand and follow. The more advanced students lend a helping hand and are very friendly and respectful with absolutely no egos. The school environment is very welcoming and courteous. Every student is taught the importance of fundamentals and self defense, and, if competition jiujitsu is your inclination, or simply looking to learn jiujitsu to become a better person, it caters to that as well. The gi's, mats, bathrooms, and locker rooms are always clean and maintained. The tuition rates are very reasonable and the class schedules accommodate people's busy schedule, as well as providing instruction to everyone; children, young adults,adults, for both women and men . The kids program keeps getting bigger and bigger due to the fact that classes are taught in an engaging manner and well organized.
