The head Professor ran class today. I love that. Everyone pays attention, no fooling around, and sparring is a little more serious.

The instructor, Professor Dande (pronounced "Dun-jee"), is the kindest, most humblest instructor I have ever met.

But everyone was friendly and the atmosphere was fun and encouraging so I kept going back. I've been training for a little over a year now and I absolutely love it. It's not at all what I expected. Jiu Jitsu is equal parts physical and mental and allows me to clear my head and stay in the present moment like nothing I've ever experienced. It's like an amazing workout paired with a couple hours of meditation. There is an endless amount to learn which keeps it interesting. And while I didn't start because I wanted to learn self-defense, I walk with a little more confidence knowing I could defend myself in a real world situation if I ever needed to. There are lots of great instructors, each with their own unique teaching style. The head instructor, Richard Giberson, is a black belt under Relson Gracie. He is super talented, funny and truly wants to help his students learn and progress. If you're curious about Jiu Jitsu, I highly recommend coming to a class and checking it out. Great instructors, great group of students, and an all around awesome school. 6pm Wednesday is a "Fundamentals" class. It's only a hour and is geared toward beginners and people working on getting better at the basics!

When I was done with my first few classes at IJJ, I knew it was the right place. Gabriel looks out for new white belts like myself, he makes sure that we start slow so the possibility of injury is much less. You're able to start rolling at the first class, but he pairs white belts mostly upper belts. I have also been very impressed by the instruction of the black, brown and purple belts that Gabriel has paired me with for techniques. IJJ allows you to wear your own gi, rashguards, etc. They have their own of course, but there is no pressure to buy them. The atmosphere here is friendly and encouraging. I highly recommend trying out a week of free classes.

Integração has beyond exceeded my expectations in this regard. Starting with Gabriel the instructor, who you can tell not only has a master level understanding of jiujitsu; But more importantly, can break it down in a way that anyone can easily understand and learn. This is a truly vital quality I've recognized in all the best teachers I've ever had. Hilarious and fun guy to talk to as well! It was clear to me how much this has spread through out the rest of the gym when many of the higher belts would come up to me after class to help with some of the moves I was struggling with. There is no ego, and everyone is just trying to help each other out and get better. If you're looking to get started in jiujitsu, Integração offers a free trial week and I highly recommend you give it a shot!
