I'm a beginner to BJJ and tried out various gyms around me in South Austin. As a woman and a…read morebeginner, the BJJ scene can be intimidating. Gracie Humaitá was BY FAR the friendliest and most accessible to beginners & women. They have free beginner classes twice/week (they even let you borrow gis!) so you can try out the sport with no commitment and learn the basics in a very safe environment (vs some other gyms where they put me into regular classes with very little instruction). The instructors are all incredibly nice and great teachers, and most of the beginner classes have other black or colored belts who walk around answering questions and helping you on the moves. Paulo, the head instructor, is also very friendly, inclusive, and promotes a great culture at the gym. After about a month doing beginners classes, I signed up for the membership, bought my own gi, and am thrilled to continue my BJJ journey! If it weren't for finding Gracie Humaitá, I likely would have quit after a couple classes at any of the other gyms I tried out. This gym, instruction, and community has been incredible, and I hope anyone who's on the fence gives them a try!

My complaints went unheard. I quit and over a year's time, several others quit too. They only removed him after he bit someone in sparring. Then he just went to the Humaita in Cedar Park, where I was attending the veteran training days because I'm a veteran with PTSD, but he would just show up to those classes too even though he wasn't a veteran. He would do it to harass me. So I quit going there too. Finally he was kicked out of there 6-12 months later. I cannot support a school that doesn't take harassment or threats of abuse from their members seriously. Creig is still in the community and he fights amateurs Muay Thai at local bars. I cannot recommend this school because of their behavior in this matter.

People walking around shirtless, dripping sweat, stinking, in bare feet, only socks, crocs, and Teva sandles. Nasty. Old dilapidated and low quality dumbbells, only 2 old treadmills and a few of the manual treadmills, no fixed weight barbells, a bathroom falling apart with the toilet bowl cover hanging on by one hinge. No air conditioning. Hot and smelly. Humid atmosphere. Couldn't draw up a worse gym in my imagination. To me it's 1 star but I guess to cross fit cultists this is what they like. Only a few smoothie choices and no chicken wraps or anything in their nutrition bar or whatever it's called. If you know how to work out and don't need or want a trainer or group then this place is definitely not for you. They do an incredible job on marketing and must edit photos or take superb angles like a catfish on tinder. Almost thinking they pay influencers to hype this place up. Either way I'd prefer the most basic Planet Fitness or Crunch 100x over this. In fact I'd rather get chubby and not work out over having to work out in an environment like this again.

The instructors seemed a bit more like salesmen trying to get people interest rather than focusing on the training. One of them ended up comparing hypotenuse and kaizens with techniques... Overall the cost was above average in addition to contract fees and uniform. I did not try the jujitsu so idk what that's like. It's possibly better. I will say there the students get quite a bit of attention from the instructors if you are looking to get constant feedback on training

Finally I just stopped attending, wasting about 6 months of my prepaid year. I thought that was it until suddenly they started billing me again. I contacted them immediately and they said they auto renewed my contract, despite the fact that I hadn't attended in months. They called it "standard business practice." Dumb but fine, just be aware of that. After that things got really bad. The cancellation process was anything but standard. First of all they wanted a contract cancellation fee, a months class fee and late charge fee. I was told I had to email them cancel, despite speaking with them directly. Even after I emailed them, they still made me come in person to settle the final bill. When I arrived, I was made to wait, only to realize later that the owner or head instructor was on his way. When he got there, he sat between me and the door and spent nearly an hour leaning in aggressively pressuring me to sign back up. I told him several times I wasn't interested and that my mind was made up, but he wouldn't let me cancel and leave. Unfortunately, after about 30 minutes of this, I gave in. I'm ashamed to admit I let myself be bullied into renewing a contract I didn't want. For a place that claims to build confidence, the experience felt more like a flashback to dealing with high school bullies. I'll never return, and now I'm stuck paying nearly $500 just to get out of the contract I didn't want. Very disappointing. Definitely more 1980s Cobra Kai than Miyagi-Do. I absolutely would not recommend this place.

The classes I've attended the most are the morning classes Professor Davis definitely has a lot of high level moves and concepts but breaks it down so that it's scaffolded to all levels. He's literally said 'you can stop here if you're comfortable.' He's also very accessible, both as an instructor and just as a human being. There isn't a rigid formality here so if you have a question or are frankly, lost like I frequently am you can just stop and ask for help without being afraid of being 'that guy.' I had to pause due to surgery/recuperating and it was as easy pausing my billing and being told if I needed more time to just let them know. I'm looking forward to get back on the mats and start training again-where I'm definitely going to have to ask a lot of questions.

This class has been wonderful for my son, and there are several areas where I think this school truly excels. I find that Master Um truly teaches discipline by example: he is very calm and respectful in his interactions with the kids, and encourages them to offer their best behavior. His positive attitude helps shape the eagerness and attention the students bring to class. In addition, the classes have a handful of fantastic youth serving as student instructors. These older students are all overwhelmingly supportive and set a wonderful example for the younger crop. As far as belt progression, the syllabus for each rank is clearly communicated to the students, and they are always aware of what skills they need to learn before being eligible for belt testing. While beginner to advanced belts might be in the same class, Master Um partners students in a way that each can benefit from grappling with a parter of similar skill and weight. In addition, several drills and exercises are performed to provide the necessary athletic basis for the sport. Classes are small, and all students get the attention of their teacher. We left a traditional karate school to join Master Martial Arts, and I am so grateful we did. Master Um provides a very positive learning environment, and ample opportunities to develop the skills and conduct for the martial art of your choice. Definitely give them a chance to train you (adult classes! yes!) or your child.
