I had to get 4 wisdom teeth pulled. it was easy to make an appointment in a short time span. It was also a quick wait. Both nurses were kind making the process less daunting. Took under an hour. I was under anesthesia but there was minimal pain after following. Recovery is going smoothly and they made sure to call and ask me a day later how I was doing. Glad I went to Paramount!! read more

Extremely hard to contact the office, no one returns calls in the office. Always have a issue with dental insurance when trying to make appointments. Staff always say that I don't have insurance for a covered dental procedure. My dentist referred me to Dr Katz after seeing swelling on left side my face following a root canal, was not getting better. I was told to get there right away and left work to go. While a emergency referral, I still waited a good hour in a crowded waiting area, with a painful swollen (and embarrassing looking) face. Once called in, I was seen rather quickly but also was very rushed. I didn't even talk to my oral surgeon Dr David Sheen for more than a min before he injected me with several shots of Anesthesia inside of my gums which were swollen, tender and painful when touched. When he got to the ones close to chin area it hurt really bad and I cried out "It hurts" and he said "yeah it gonna hurt" with no emotion and lack of care. After that, he went to check on his next patient in the room next to me, who was crying before the surgeon came into my room. Crying like she was in pain, which was scary to listen to. He came back into my room after about 5 mins to do an incision and drain the abscess. It hurt alotttttt. In pain, I grabbed onto his arm which prob was not safe but it was a instinct reaction to the pain. He pushed my arm down and seemed annoyed I had grabbed onto him. Mind you I am crying in pain. All he had to do was be like ''hey i dont want to mess up with anything so i need your arm down. I know this hurts but dont worry after done you will feel relief and I am going to do it as fast as i can xyz''. No compassion or bedside manner whatsoever. I was balling tears and the only one who showed any compassion to my pain was the assistant in the room with us. Also they discuss financials as soon as you get in the chair. Not even a question of what brought you here or how you are feeling. The one plus is the office is nice and clean but I would not recommend this place to anyone read more

Would give this horrendous place a big ZERO if I could! It's pretty much like a factory in there rushing patients in and out not even taking a second to talk or explain anything because all they care about is how many patients they can get done to make more money. Told the dr and put it on my forms that I am allergic to Penicillin - they prescribed amoxicillin anyway. I even asked if that was ok - yeah yeah it's fine thanks call with any issues. I ended up with a severe rash and then being rushed to the hospital a few days later with an anaphylactic reaction!!! Called the office when the reactions started and the dr didn't even have the decency to get on the phone with me or call me back!! All the told me was oh it's fine just take some Benadryl. I went to paramount oral surgery a week ago to get an exposure and 4 teeth extracted. The procedure was super quick and easy. Prior to the procedure I was very nervous and worried but the staff calmed me down and definitely helped with the nerves. Dr. Sheen was kind and explained everything to me and let my parents stay till I fell asleep. Afterwards i was in pain but was prescribed ibuprofen which helped and they called the day after to check on me. read more

Extremely unfriendly staff all around. Whenever you ask questions you are provided with a short, nasty answer. I went for wisdom tooth extraction. The surgeon talked to me for 2 seconds before administering the anesthesia. They gave me 2 seconds to wake up and rushed me out the door, practically unable to walk. This office is like a factory, they want you in and out as quick as possible. No compassion or friendliness whatsoever. Scheduling an appointment for 2 infected teeth to be removed was easy. I had my regular dentist send my records and panoramic x-ray over and emailed my own full set of x-rays. I even got a phone call from the office at Paramount to confirm we are "good to go" for 2 extractions on Friday. I waited an hour before being called into the exam room, but then just a minute or two for the doctor to come in. In that minute, I was presented with the exact costs for the scheduled procedure-an exam and 2 extractions, then asked to sign and date that document. Dr. Sheen examined the infected area and determined there to not be an infection; we had to clarify that there WAS an infection, for which I was prescribed antibiotics, but its better now. I thought they had my records from the dentist I just saw on Monday, so this took a minute. I asked if it were my choice to have the wisdom tooth and the one next to it removed anyway, and he said "yes", but he tried to talk me out of it. I had extensive dental work due to a traumatic accident that has been expensive and painful; all I want is for these back teeth to be pulled. Ultimately, he refused to do it because they are getting better and there is no reason; I would have to wait for a reason. I clarified that to mean "if the infection comes back when the antibiotic was finished, and I would be in excruciating pain again", to which he said "yes." Maybe this was his best medical decision, but it was a waste of my time, my deductible - which of course they demanded, and the anxiety that I went through for 3 days because I opted to not be sedated for extractions THAT NEVER HAPPENED. The office is disorganized in its communication. Dr. Sheen is disdainful in manner, saying that one can opt for wisdom teeth to be pulled (I practically begged for him to take at least that one), but then ultimately exerting his control based on his professional opinion that I should keep a wisdom tooth and loose tooth with a 25 yr. old root canal until they cause pain again. There's no respect for one's wishes, their time, their money, or their feelings. read more

The staff was nice. The doctors were nice. I don't understand why they have 24/7 number but they don't even pick up. I had my 4 wisdom teeth removed yesterday and im in extreme pain. I just need my meds changed :(. I told the surgeon that i was on ssris and he completely ignored me. I didn't get the pain relief that i needed. The second day was the worst. IF YOU ARE ON SSRIS, ADVOCATE FOR YOURSELF SO YOU GET THE PAIN RELIEF YOU NEED. To manage pain for patients on SSRIs, prescribers should choose nonopioids or direct-acting opioids. Very shocked and disappointed in today's visit. Took a day off from work to take my son. When I made this appointment I specifically said he had 3-4 extra teeth to be removed. He was there last year for the removal of extra teeth with Dr Sheen and everything went very smoothly. The office has last years x rays on file and they are familiar with my son's unusual case. When Dr. Katz looked at his x ray's from this year, not much changed but he determined he would need more time than was allotted for his procedure. I told the staff that I told the receptionist this when I made the appointment, I was told the front desk doesn't know. My opinion is the front desk needs to communicate with office better. My opinion is there is no regard for patients/family time. At this point I made an appointment for a future date and was asked would you like a disc of his x ray, there was no mention of a fee for this. It's always good to keep a record but other than that I don't have a need for it. When I went to check out I was told I owe $250. I very nicely said i do not want the disc if I have to pay that much for it. At that point the office manage was about to get involved when out of no where dr katz popped up and told me to take the disc for free and not to come back. I asked why he was upset and what I did and he just said keep the disc you will need it to find someone else. I still have no idea why he was so rude and extremely unprofessional. The only thing i can assume is he did not like me asking, very respectfully questions regarding his procedure or maybe I bruised his ego in the fact I asked the girls to make then next appointment with Dr Sheen. I have to add at no point did I yelled or was disrespectful. I have never written a negative review in my life but today I could not ignore the total disrespect and unprofessionalism. Took my 17yrs son for two wisdom teeth extractions and naturally he's nervous. There were multiple negatives at this appointment 1-Dentist told my son he was not in pain after he complained of pain, said "it's just pressure"-DISMISSIVE 2-told him"buddy I know what I'm doing, do you want to reschedule?"-RUDE 3-no one came in to give post extraction instructions, I had to ask what's next. I'm a nurse I deal with rude patients all day long but it's my job to do my job professionally at all times regardless of personal feelings towards a certain group. I never bring race into conversations but, this was one of the first times I truly felt the biases I often hear about at Dr.s' offices...bc my son is a big football player he must not be in pain...do we not deserve to get instructions on post care...I overheard heard another Dentist completely explaining the procedure and post care to another patient, did my son not deserve this same treatment. Why should I have to ask how to care for a tooth extraction. This is the reason why minorities don't often go to the doctor out of fear of mistreatment...this was truly disappointing and traumatizing experience for my son to go through. DO BETTER!!! My wisdom tooth was killing me for a few days so I finally bit the bullet and went to see Dr Katz. Last time I was at Paramount was about 8 years ago. Dr Katz wasn't there back then so I was a little hesitant to go. Im glad I did, he was nice and did a good job explaining everything. Like he said the worst part was the novacane shot. The procedure was over in about 5 mins. I was in some pain for a day or two after but good as new now. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend dr Katz in the future. read more

One of the managers is a bit of a doo da doo and unprofessional, he told me they didn't accept my primary insurance after they pulled my tooth even when I double checked they had both at the front desk. Should never take a patient back without verifying first... imagine trying to figure that out with gauze & a numbed mouth ended up leaving having to pay a bill so I would recommend triple checking yourself. I did not have a good experience there for my double wisdom tooth extraction. Dr. Katz ddn't explain any post- op information prior to my IV sedation. I was seated in the chair and next thing I knew, I was forced to walk out with a stranger walking me out where I COULD BARELY STAND, LET ALONE WALK. If she was in front of me right now I could not describe her! and she literally walked me out facing me holding my hands. I do not know how long the recovery is supposed to be and had no concept of time at that point but being a petite woman in my 50's, nothing to eat for 6+ hours I was definitely out of it, past woosey!! Why not call my husband in or let me wait and recover more. This stranger put on my jacket and zipped? I'm sure I didn't. Next, I had complications with recovery, I went 5 days later (the weekend they were closed) . It seemed I had dry socket and tight jaw (trismus), I had to google it when I left because again Dr. Katz skirted off and did NOT provide any information. Had to go for an implant- cleaning out a dead tooth, and the nerves and then putting in the metal screw for implant over the course of a few visits . I had two wisdom teeth extracted. They did a good job and that was no problem. The problem was when they woke me up from the anesthesia. They literally did not give me even a full 60 seconds to wake up before they rushed me out the chair and out the front door. Started asking for money when I was not even coherent at that point to understand what I was paying for . I could not even stand up straight . This set off a terrible episode of vertigo and even now 4 days later the room is still spinning and I'm still throwing up . I got all four of my wisdom teeth out having minor complications with one and I was very nervous about the entire situation. The medical staff at Paramount did a fantastic job with the entire extraction and recovery was surprisingly quick, painless and everything has healed up very well. UNPROFESSIONAL OFFICE. UNTRAINED EMPLOYEES. POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE. BEWARE OF ADD'L OUT OF POCKET COSTS! There should be an option for ZERO STARS. I realize now I should've read the reviews before I decided to go to this place. In retrospect the signs were all there but being busy and just needing to get my daughter's wisdom tooth out, I continued through the process while protecting myself by paying special attention to out of pocket costs. I knew from past experience that sedation isn't usually covered by insurance so I made sure to ask before the appointment to be informed of any out of pocket costs. I was consistently assured they would let me know but instead I had to keep calling to find out. In fact, we had to reschedule the original appointment because they never got back to me. Two days before the second appt someone called to remind me about the appt and I explained that no one had followed-up about the insurance. She assured me that someone would call. After another 24 hours - it was now the day before the surgery - and still no call I called again. I was told that our primary and/or secondary insurances would cover everything but I may have to pay $110 for panoramic x-rays (no one ever mentioned this here or anywhere I'd ever been to extract a wisdom tooth). I was at work and wasn't sure what the dentist had given me so I called the dentist who emailed me panoramic x-rays. We arrived 30 minutes b4 the appt and waited over an hour to be seen. (I also now realize after going to a responsible office that we never had a consultation and they never informed us of the pre-surgery protocol). When we were finally called they told me the insurance didn't cover some other procedure. I was shocked since I'd spoken to them the day before and it again felt like they were searching to find out of pocket expenses. I asked how this could be. I was quite frustrated at the nonchalant attitudes about my money, the unprofessionalism, the customer service, the assistants who look like they are still children and behave as if they were not properly trained and I told them so. Then DR. STUART KATZ appeared and accused me of "screaming". I repeatedly told him that I may be speaking loudly because of my frustration but I definitely wasn't screaming. I was calm and continued to try and explain my frustration. He never once apologized for the multiple screw ups, miscommunication, lack of communication. I asked him for an apology and instead he said that I should apologize to the entire office for "screaming" and that we should go elsewhere. When I insisted on being seen because of the time that had passed from the multiple appts (3 months/their fault) and the fact that my daughter and I missed work and school for this appt, he threatened to call the police and told me that he would be pressing charges for trespassing. I decided to wait for the police to arrive but after 20 mins or so they still had not and while I was waiting I phoned my dentist who provided the name of another oral surgeon so we decided to try to salvage the day there. I should mention that I am a black woman and that I noticed that there were ABSOLUTELY NO BLACK EMPLOYEES at this office. I'm accustomed to this in certain areas and there are times that I've wondered about someone's poor customer service and questionable attitude in these areas especially when it is clear that they don't employ black people. It can feel like your business isn't desired. And I do believe Stuart Katz's behavior was directly associated with my race because as a black woman - as all black women know - a common form of discrimination against black women is to label them as aggressive and loud. After reading many of the reviews I realize that while he may also be a racist, he is also just greedy, unprofessional, uncaring for a medical professional, and not a nice person. If you still decide to go to this office, stay on your Ps & Qs especially if you're black. read more

I ran to my general dentist, literally in tears, because of the pain my wisdom teeth were causing me. I had an infection and could barely open my mouth. My general dentist quickly got me an appointment with Dr. Matthews at Paramount Oral Surgery. I could not have asked for a better experience. Normally I am petrified of the dentist chair, tears falling before the hygienist even walks in the room. However, the entire staff at Paramount made me feel calm and comfortable. They told me it was normal to be afraid and it was going to be okay. Dr. Matthews explained everything to me and showed me the images he was looking at himself. The surgery was painless and the recovery was amazing. I did not swell or feel any pain at all. I can not thank Dr. Matthews, his assistants who helped me before and after the procedure, and the ladies at the reception desk enough. Really a one of a kind place! Today, I had a wisdom tooth extraction at Paramount with Dr Dirienzo at the helm. He and his staff were very kind, and all made me feel comfortable about the procedure. They conveyed all costs upfront, prior to the X-ray and the extraction. Subsequently, his staff informed me of all post surgery procedures I had to abide with, and repeated it a second time, because they probably noticed I have attention deficit disorder. They even make you spin a wheel upon exiting, where you can win small prizes... cute... Lastly, I should point out how clean this office was, and how modern their technology was. I was so hopeful reading the reviews for this doctors office but boy was I surprised. For starters when I made the appointment on the phone the finance aspect of the visit was never discussed which led me to believe the procedure I needed was covered. I needed to have a broken tooth removed because it was causing me extreme pain. The day of my appointment I arrive and my husband drove me because I was under the impression I needed sedation like was discussed when I made the appointment. About 20 minutes of my husband and I waiting in the reception area we were told he had to leave because no guests were allowed with the patients. This restriction would have been fine and understandable if it had applied to everyone in the waiting area but it didn't. I witnessed one patient have her husband allowed to go in for treatment with her and at least two other patients in the waiting room that had their spouses with them. When my husband inquired about the policy and why we were being singled out from everyone else he was yelled at and told they would cancel my appointment if he didn't like it. When I went in for treatment it became very clear to me why they didn't want my husband with me and that's because their intentions were to try to rake me over the coals for every dollar they could. They wanted to charge me for 30 minutes of anesthesia which was about $160 for a procedure that took 10 minutes. I declined that but they also managed to hit me over the head for $160. I would avoid this place at all cost, and as a matter of fact I would avoid any doctor on Staten Island because they're all in it for the money and could care less about their patients health. read more

Literally could not have been more impressed than I was today. I manage 17 high end medical offices and know a lot of the clallenges that can be faced, but they were spot on, friendly and super efficient... From reception to discharge everyone was great. The doctor had a great bedside manner, as did the dental assistants. Everything was clean and orderly the way a doctor's office should be. As far as the procedure, the tooth extraction was took about 15 minutes for numbing (as I asked for extra time), and the removal was under 15 seconds. read more

Had a similar experience to what many other reviewers went through. Made the appointment and gave them my insurance information. Nothing else was mentioned to me about billing until I was SITTING IN THE CHAIR, several minutes away from being put under, when I was bombarded with papers to sign. I had to actually remove a blood pressure cuff to give them my credit card and was shocked to find out I owed over $500. A few weeks later, I called to make sure insurance covered the rest and I was told there was NO BALANCE on my account. However, to my surprise 10 months later, I received another bill for $465 dollars. As someone who has severe anxiety about dental procedures, I feel I was taken advantage of by a money hungry company. I would not recommend this office to anyone. read more

The experience I had at this facility was horrible. Dr. Sullivan seemed nice and caring during the consultation, but clearly, he wanted to charge me extra money for sedation ($420 for 30 mins) because he thought that "I needed the sedation because he wasn't sure that the local numbness would be enough during the extraction process". I changed my mind, and instead, I used the laughing gas which was a little bit cheaper (especially where I had to pay everything out of my pocket). When under the laughing gas, not able to properly answer back and protect myself, Dr. Sullivan very nasty tells me that I should have done sedation instead. That's not professional, and humanlike!! Also, they charge a $25 fee for a ridiculous photocopy of the X-ray. What a joke! read more

Compassionate care? Where? Not at paramount, that's for sure. All they care about is money and not your well being. They don't thoroughly explain anything on the phone and when you come in they try to charge you for all kinds of things even when you have insurance. They make you feel awkward for not having the money on hand. My experience at paramount was unpleasant. I went in for a wisdom tooth extraction, I was visibly anxious and was met with indifference and attitude instead of kindness and "compassion" they immediately take an X-ray and then bring me into the room and explain that I need to pay out of pocket for the x-ray because my insurance didn't cover it fully. Okay, why wouldn't you tell me this prior to taking the X-ray. Hmm...discussion of finance is foremost even before the doctor comes in to consult with me. They make you feel overwhelmed and bombarded with dollar signs. Then the doctor comes in looks at the X-ray, says he can have the tooth out in a few minutes which was reassuring, looks in my mouth for a few seconds and says it doesn't need to be removed immediately but will cause issues down the line. My husband and I decide we will discuss for a few minutes and decide and a minute later we hear "did you decide what you want to do?" I said we want to move forward but we don't have the money upfront can you bill us? Some more waiting and then a financial coordinator comes in and says "if you want the procedure done today we need to collect before we begin" so I declined and wanted to ask the doctor another question and they wouldn't allow me to see him and the surgical tech said she would answer my questions but didn't have an answer for any them. They kept asking if we would promise to pay the money for the X-ray tomorrow. We left and felt really strange about the whole scenario. This morning, first thing, I called my insurance which informed me that I didn't have to pay for an X-ray or anything else being that it was just a consultation. Moments later I receive a call from paramount asking if I will be paying the money for the X-ray right now? I explained to the girl on the phone that I spoke to my insurance and was met with a huge attitude. "You have to pay for the X-ray because you had one in May and your insurance allows them every six months" I explain that I wasn't informed about anything. I told her that no one said I could bring a copy of my X-ray, I was told absolutely nothing and she replied with "unfortunately, I'm sorry that no one told you that you could bring a copy but you still have to pay" I answered her with "unfortunately, you are going to have to bill me" are these oral surgeons or loan sharks? I mean cmon! I believe in the medical field health first, money second. I understand that all services need to be paid but this should be discussed before you even walk through that door. It's unfair to the patient to be made to feel awkward for simply not knowing anything. They have a financial coordinator on staff to come "collect" but the financial coordinator can't call you ahead of time to "collect" your insurance information and go over an estimate with you? Not to mention, if you look up the individual reviews for the surgeons on staff, you will be quite surprised with what you read. Scary stuff. If you want to be treated like a pauper and thief who entered the twilight zone by all means go to paramount. If you want to be treated with dignity and care, look elsewhere. read more

Patient care is nonexistent, front desk have no clue what they are doing and when they make a mistake they can not take responsibility and try to blame it on the patient or patient's family. I'm giving him one star because I can't leave 0 stars. First I want to say his staff is very kind and caring. But this oral surgeon Dr. Katz is trash. He removed my daughters two wisdom teeth and accidentally broke another tooth while extracting one of the wisdom teeth. After the surgery was complete he went to speak to my wife and said everything went great and my daughter did great. Since she was a little loopy from the sedation she didn't feel anything but as she started to come around her tongue felt a sharp point piercing her tongue. When I looked I saw her good tooth was broken in half. I immediately called the office back and asked what had happened. The doctor didn't even get back on the phone with me. He had his receptionist tell me her tooth broke while he was extracting her wisdom tooth and told me to make an appointment with another doctor. Even after I asked to speak to him he didn't get on the phone. My wife called two days later and still haven't heard From that piece of trash. He's very unprofessional. I don't recommend someone who treats people worse than cattle. read more

Had a very bad experience the first time I came to get my wisdom tooth taken out almost exactly one year ago with another dr. I was in excruciating pain throughout the whole process and it made me not want to come back. However this visit was like night and day. The Dr. I had made me laugh and feel comfortable, told me the process and what he was doing the entire time. He was quick and painless. I didn't feel a thing this time and I had a more extensive procedure then last time. I walked out the first time a hysterical mess this time i walked out laughing (partially from the laughing gas lol). I would definitely recommend coming to see him to friends and family for their wisdom tooth removals or other oral surgeries. They were extremely accommodating when i called on a Wednesday looking for a Friday morning appointment. It was a quick in and out. read more

Yesterday I got my wisdom tooth taken out. This place was recommended to me by my best friend. Let me tell you. The is spotless and super clean the people are so nice and I was so nervous about getting my tooth extracted but they assured me everything was going to be ok. Dr. Adam Schuessler was very nice and knowledgeable. Both on the phone and in person, the front desk staff was always friendly (surprisingly can't say that about a lot of places) and always willing to ask a doctor my questions (who immediately answered them). Same about the great medical assistants. The three times I was there, I never waited more than 5-10 minutes - even when I showed up an hour early to my appointment. The facility looks amazing - extremely new and clean. Thankfully, they also accepted my insurance and I paid nothing for a $4000 procedure. The doctor was honest, educated me on my options, and let me make the decision regarding the surgery myself. He also suggested I plan 5 days off of work (silly me only wanted to take off 2 days) and I'm glad I had the 5! I had 4 impacted wisdom teeth removed at once, and though I was definitely very painful at first and still sore a week later, it was much less painful than I had imagined - I attribute this to a skilled oral surgeon. Even with all 4 teeth removed - I did not get any infections or painful dry sockets. I'm really nervous about dental procedures, but I was able to get both laughing gas and IV sedation, and I don't remember a thing from the procedure. The doctor even placed the IV Catheter quickly and painlessly. After the surgery, the staff immediately sent my prescriptions to the pharmacy in time to pick up on the way home, and sent me home with gauze/ice packs/oral syringe/everything I'd need. I have nothing but good things to say about this place, and would recommend the Paramount Oral Surgery office and Dr. Adam Schuessler to anyone needing oral surgery. read more
