I began seeing her for treatment of depression. She immediately took me off of two drugs that I had been on, while I was unsure that it was wise to withdraw these medications, I trusted her medical opinion. She indicated that she hoped to soon have me off all meds but I refused to let her remove my base anti depressant. The withdrawal of medication by Dr. Amalathas sent me into a major depressive episode. It was the worst I had ever experienced before. When I went to see her during this crisis she indicated that she learned from my therapist that I occasionally smoked marijuana and that she refused to treat me any further as a result. Being bailed on my her during a time of complete crisis made me angry and left me feeling incredibly abandoned and without hope. I do not believe any doctor, such as a psychiatrist, who has such direct control over those at risk of taking their own life should completely abandon their patient at such a time of crisis. She is of course entitled to her own policies however, if you do decide to treat with her, I would recommend keeping your mouth shut about anything that she may find personally offensive. Specifically if you smoke marijuana, as many of us do - medicinally or otherwise- absolutely keep that to yourself. I am now struggling to find a new doctor after learning that Dr. Amalathas is not one that can be counted on. Your life is too valuable to be trusted to the hands of Dr. Amalathas. I am both lucky and blessed to have had a solid support system around me after being abandoned by her. I truly believe that she put my life at direct risk.

She showed me how I was self medicating through extreme exercise and obscene amounts of caffeine. She prescribed one drug, very low dosage and non-addictive and it cured those dark winter thoughts. It also gave me some respite from my ADD though I rely more on the exercise and caffeine. Went off SAD drug for summer with no problems except increased ADD symptoms (not finishing tasks before jumping into others).

Office staff is unprofessional! 1. They set me up with the…read morewrong email address, so I didn't receive the paperwork for intake 2. The intake paperwork contains a single form with 350 questions, many of which are essay style. The intake worker didn't have access to my finished form, although I could see it online via the portal. 3. The first appointment is for intake. I received a call the morning of the interview saying they'd need to reschedule because the intake worker hadn't been notified of the appointment. 4. The intake worker phoned 15 minutes late. I had already phoned the office to find out where I should be logged in, and they told me I would be notified when my appointment started. I had to explain multiple times that the appointment time was in the past. I was told "that shouldn't be the case", and then "she'll call you."

1 star -- A deeply disturbing experience at MidHudson Regional Hospital…read more My husband was admitted to MidHudson Regional Hospital in Poughkeepsie on the evening of August 28, 2026, for profuse bleeding from his groin/urethral catheter site and a UTI that was already being treated by his nursing home. I am his legal guardian. This was his seventh hospitalization in approximately 10 weeks for these recurring problems. During his hospitalization, I was asked about another CT scan. I then learned that a CT performed on August 28 had actually been a brain CT. I had not been informed that a brain CT had been performed. The hospital record reportedly listed "altered mental status" as the reason for the brain CT. My husband does become confused/delirious when he develops an infection, and I specifically told the hospital staff that this is what happens to him when he has a UTI/infection. His reason for being brought to the ER, however, was profuse bleeding from the groin/urethral catheter area while being treated for a UTI, not an unexplained neurological problem. I am not saying that a brain CT can never be appropriate for an elderly patient with altered mental status. I am saying that the hospital should be able to clearly explain what altered mental status they observed, when it occurred, what I reported about his infection-related delirium, and why a brain CT was considered necessary in the circumstances. I am also extremely concerned that I was not informed about the CT at the time it was performed. The discharge experience was equally unacceptable. On August 31, caseworker Megan told me my husband was medically cleared for discharge and that an ambulance would pick him up at 2:00 PM. His nursing facility is only about 10 minutes from the hospital. I went to the facility at approximately 3:30 PM to meet him. He wasn't there. I was terrified. Given his condition and his repeated hospitalizations, I feared that he had suffered a medical emergency, had coded, or had been involved in an accident during transportation. I called the hospital and was then told that the pickup time had been changed to 5:30 PM. Nobody had called me to tell me that the scheduled transportation had been delayed by three and a half hours. For a vulnerable patient and his legal guardian, this is not a minor scheduling problem. A guardian should know where a patient is and when he is being transported. The combination of the unexplained brain CT, inadequate communication about significant diagnostic testing, and the failure to notify me about a major change in discharge transportation has completely destroyed my confidence in this hospital. I will never voluntarily take my husband back to MidHudson Regional Hospital. I am filing a formal complaint and requesting an investigation into these events, including the medical indication for the brain CT, the documentation of "altered mental status," communication with his legal guardian, and the discharge/transportation failure.

As I progress, so does she; her bag of tools appears to be bottomless. I have been seeking psychiatric care since I was a young teen and have seen both psychiatrists and psychologists, and I can say with confidence that Barbara, as a Clinical Social Worker is superior by all measures in actually helping to provide the tools to navigate through daily life and relationships, and not just provide some framing diagnosis that ultimately becomes the enabling factor that allows for continued unwanted thought processes and behaviors. She has never failed to deliver! I'm not sure how she has the strength to work from the wee hours of the morning until late at night. She must have some type of super-human emotional/physical power, as I feel like she too, feels the pain of her patients. I have referred her to several friends in need of help, and all of them feel the same way about her work. It's like some secret sisterhood when one of us references 'Barbara'. In fact, I came to Barbara, because of a recommendation from my now husband's referral. Barbara is extremely professional, punctual, on task and result oriented.
