There are multiple masses on Sunday as well as weekdays in both English and Polish. There is a information board located on the corner Humboldt Street and Driggs Avenue which shows days and times for masses and confessions. This beautiful Gothic style church and it's parish date back to 1896. Church was completed approximately on November 13, 1904. Church has twin towers with a seating capacity of approximately 1250, with 1000 seats in the main portion and 250 on the second level. I took some pictures of the inside but to see the true beauty one has to actually attend a mass there and see the church for themselves!

Old First hosts a lot of community organizations, and recently, when the synagogue up the street had problems during their holy days, Old First opened their doors and let them use their facilities for their worships. The downside is that the church is definitely starting to fall apart and could use a handful of help from their members and the community. Their boiler was recently having problems (I do think it's fixed now), but that made for some very cold times in the building, and the pews are in various states of disarray and tend to disappear every once in a while. The walls have started to peel inside and the outside tends to attract some sometimes unsavory characters, but overall a great institution to have in the Slope!

I would love for some historical society to show up and offer us a lot of money for this purpose! Recently we have started to re-plaster and re-paint the walls of the sanctuary. In the past several years, we have also repainted the narthex and lower halls, and restored our organ and our Steinway piano. We welcome visitors to come and look at our sanctuary or meet members of our congregation!

The Poetry Project is a highly prestigious program and a lot of important poets have come out of it. I've been here for memorials--Tuli Kupferberg and Jim Carroll--and attended my first Blessing of the Animals. Patti Smith sang at Jim Carroll's memorial and Richard Hell read--how cool is that? And like it or not, the church offers a lot of support for the disenfranchised of the neighborhood, even hosting talks like "9/11 Was An Inside Job."

The street that it's on was originally the driveway leading up to the Stuyvesant estate. The family later sold their estate to the city, for the sake of the Grid Plan of 1811, and they kept the church and driveway intact. It's one of the few streets above 14th street that do not adhere to the Grid. There are only a handful of benches to sit down on and most of the times they're filled up. It's a great place to people watch as it's the Nexis of several busy streets. Occasionally they have a farmers market and the grounds within the church are usually open for you to walk through. My favorite feature are the distinct gates that wrap around the property. They're almost gothic looking and incredible!

The church is just stunning and looks so different from anything around it with its soaring spire into the sky and its red and white brick structure. A bit of history of this church from Google - "The Roman Catholic parish of St. Antony of Padua, in the Greenpoint area of Brooklyn, was established in 1856. In 1874, Patrick C. Keeley of Brooklyn designed the present Gothic Revival church, which is constructed of red brick with white limestone trim, and features a 240-foot spire.
