This is a great bookstore! We came through on our way to the airport & Bri greeted us and offered to provide any recommendations on books. She & Sophie were a delight to get to know. The bookstore is full of aisles & little staff notes / reviews. That gave it all a nice personal touch. Bri convinced my husband to buy a book and we took home a bookmark that was designed by a local. It was a nice souvenir! We looked online at a lot of nearby bookstores & were happy we stopped by this one. One of my favorite spots in Charlotte and I have never thought before yesterday to drop in a review. They're exactly what you want in a bookstore. The people who work there are knowledgeable, friendly, caring, open minded and kind... and happen to treat my dog like a princess whenever we visit. The store itself is cozy and welcoming, the children's section has seating for story time, and their offerings often feature books banned by people who have never read them. (I just picked up a copy of James Baldwin's GIOVANNI'S ROOM on Indie Bookstore Day.) Usually the staff here is great, but have run into a few who weren't. Today when purchasing a book the staff member picked up the credit card machine and moved it out of my reach, then took my cc and tapped it herself, not sure she may have thought I was incapable of tapping my own card. My all-time favorite mom and pop book store!! It's located in the Park Road Shopping Center. There are plenty of parking spaces so it's not bad. It's a cute, quaint little book store. From the moment you step in, you can smell the books and automatically are bombarded with different books and accessories. They have different sections. Fiction, nonfiction, crime, languages, and even school work books. They have a kids' corner and different seating options in the middle of the store in case you want to preview a book. It has a nice cozy feel to it, and the employees are very helpful if you have any questions or need help finding a certain book. A huge bummer. I ordered a book via Amazon and decided to check with Park Road to see if they had it. I called to check stock on the book and was advised the warehouse had it in stock and if not additional copies can be ordered. I ordered 2 copies in hardback, as I specifically wanted the hardback copies. I cancelled the Amazon order, ya know shop local. And when Park Road called to let me know the books came in, it was discovered the clerk made an error and the wrong books were ordered. And of course Amazon is out of stock. Take my advice and just order online instead. Worst of all, they truly didn't care to own or even acknowledge the error. Disappointing is an understatement. read more

I'm so grateful we have an independent bookstore in this great old shopping center. I shopped childrens books. Nice big selection. A couple suggestions: More signs would be helpful, along with more age divisions in the age 0-5 selections.... Including the books with stickers, puzzles, etc. The card selection use some fresh input - quite dated. The humor is stale. There were still even "funny" cards about Covid/face masks. I laugh non-stop when card-shopping at Paper Skyscraper and realize people have different tastes. I will try to shop here more for books because I want to support this old treasure. Had an excellent shopping experience! I called Park Road Books to purchase some books for older elementary school kids. I relayed true information about the kids ages and my price point and she had 2 graphic novels picked out within minutes. I paid over the phone, drove to the curb, and she brought them out to my car. I haven't spent much time in this store, but I have had a very good experience with them. I ordered a book over the phone that turned out to be bound very oddly. Every other page was upside down and it was not at all clear that the book was bound this way intentionally. I didn't know this and they didn't know this, so when the book came in they let me know there was an issue and ordered another one. The next one came in and had the same issue, and so did the next one. They kept going back to the publisher to ensure I got what I was looking for and were very polite to me. Eventually the publisher told them that this was actually done intentionally by the author and I went and picked up the book. I felt like they went out of their way and made a point to ensure I was satisfied. Everyone I spoke to was kind and respectful the entire time. It's the kind of service you won't get from a place like Amazon, and it's why I'll be checking them first when looking for a book from now on. read more

I was really impressed. I've walked in before, looked around no biggie. I'm typically a "leave me alone & let me find what I want myself & I'll ask if if I need help" kind of woman. So I am minding my own business... I picked up a book on the $5 rack outside the store, wandered in and was perusing for something to catch my attention... ...what caught my attention was hearing another customer asking for help in finding something to read & hearing the response... "tell me what kinds of books you've read recently or that you have really enjoyed." An open question, asking for the customer to provide clues as to which direction they want to go! AND! The sales person listened. Awe-some. Even though I wasn't involved & only overheard - the rest of the conversation (read: conversation) showed interest, insight & knowledge of varied subjects & authors. This is and of itself is enough to give this store 5 stars. When I came to the register myself with my selections, another salesperson showed genuine delight in what I had selected and gave me some additional information about my purchase. I haven't visited this location since I lived in Costwald (a loong time ago). I escaped here on my lunch break and made it a point to not check my phone and just browse. With the outside hustle and bustle that lunch time brings to the Park Road Shopping area, the calmness is felt and admired. I'm a pretty big book reader & love trying out new book stores, so Park Road Books was a welcome sight to see. This place is relatively large for a shopping center store & they have quite a good selection of books. Aisle upon aisle is filled with different genres, & while they may not have as big a selection as your chain bookstores, they still have quite a few books. I actually prefer bookstores like this, because every title is facing you on the shelves. You don't have to turn your head sideways to read every title like your big chain bookstores. So because they don't have such a huge selection, you can see every intriguing cover & easily find books you otherwise might have passed over. They also have a large children's section to keep the kiddies occupied while you go about your book finding. And one thing that really sets this place apart is the service. They allow you free reign to search for books without pestering you, but if you do need help they are very friendly & very knowledgeable. I saw 2 people approach the counter & ask about various authors/books, & both times the lady behind the counter knew the info right off the top of her head. Park Road Books really goes above & beyond your normal big chain bookstores. While it may not have as vast a selection, it makes up for this with its better browsing ability & excellent personal service. If you're an avid book fan & you're looking for a nice atmosphere to peruse, then this place won't disappoint. read more

Amazon and big chain bookstores will never have that amazing smell that comes from a bunch of brand new books in a small area. Some other bibliophiles will understand where I am coming from. The rest of you can think that I am strange and I probably am. Despite the loud DJ outside a store nearby the bookstore was the perfect quiet refuge for me during our weekend shopping. The staff members were all friendly, the store was clean and the books were well organized. There is a cute sitting area in the back which is surrounded by children's books. Great, independent bookstore! I ventured in here for the first time a few days ago and will definitely be back. It's a nice change of pace from the over-sized mega bookstores out there and has a nice, small town feel to it. I love the handwritten recommendations from the staff on the books and the huge selection of planners, journals, notecards, etc. They host a number of authors doing discussions and signings from what I can see on their calendar (bummed I missed Chelsea Handler though) No, they don't have the selection of the huge bookstores or all the glitz and glitter but I feel a little better knowing that my money is going to the local economy to keep it running. read more
