So, I went to the auction for the free drink. That's it. I had no idea art auctions were even a thing on cruises. I ended up going back. And then again. I kept asking about piece after piece and Ronél Ströh never made me feel like I was wasting her time. Over the course of the trip she really learned my taste and found a stunning painting by Jim Warren. She Tracked it down in the catalog, wasn't even on the ship. She just knew I'd want it. Over different days she explained the difference between lithographs, serigraphs, hand-embellished pieces. I price-checked in front of her, never felt embarrassed. Didn't buy until basically the last day. Zero pressure, ever. I Left with two Kre8s, a Peter Max, a Fazzino, and that Warren. About the pricing, yes it's above street market, but the frames alone are stunning. I tried framing the complimentary lithographs I received and got a reality check fast on what framing actually costs. So honestly, the framing alone and when you include shipping is already at least 250+ everything arrived faster than I expected, beautifully packed. No issues whatsoever. One thing nobody mentions: once you buy, suddenly everyone on the ship has an auction story. There's this whole little art community that forms onboard. Genuinely fun. Go for the free drink. NCL Encore Park West art crew of Vaughn, Holly, Casey, Thomas, Timei, Bhagesh and Patil were rock stars of the ship. I never attended an art auction and yet every sea day was spent learning about artists, history and style. Vaughn captivated us with his stories about Peter Max spending 7 months drawing portraits of the firefighters who lost their lives in 9/11. I personally related to the story of Michael Godard who lost his daughter Paige in 2006 from a brain cancer. These artists have the biggest hearts hence paint from their hearts as well. So much was learned from this experience. Vaughn told the audience to buy what we love and that the art chooses us. I will hang my Godard art piece with pride and admiration. read more

We were treated to free cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, ice cream, and a beautiful and unique in person painting exhibit. They also raffled off a VIP event in NYC! This is the second time where we have bought art through Park West. The first ship was Symphony of the Seas. But, I'm here to talk about the Park West team on Carnival Celebration. Theuns,Antony (Tony), Keamohetse (Kea), Danika, Basil. The five of them were extremely professional. Tony was awesome, especially when I kept joking about trying to get a free Peter Max. This is for my experience on the Norwegian Jade cruise ship and their art auctions. This was one of the highlights of the cruise for me. Had never been to an art auction so it was a new and fun experience. There's champagne at the auctions for free if that's your thing, but I don't drink. I also got about 7 free pieces of art through raffles and give aways along with the few pieces that I actually purchased. I would imagine anyone that doesn't have a good experience probably has buyers remorse as some things are quite expensive. Just remember not to let himself be purchased. My wife and I were on the Norwegian Sky December 6th through December 22nd. We went to the art auctions several times. Ilia Lymarev, the art director, was great! He and his team worked with us on several pieces. Ilia and his staff were very knowledgeable and fun to work with. Between the raffles and being exposed to a bigger selection of art. The gallery team was amazing. Very professional, knowledgeable and friendly. Rejoice Laurent, Albertus Bodenstein and Thonda were top notch. Within days of leaving port and headed out to sea they felt more like long lost friends instead of pushy sales people. We were able to pickup around a half dozen pieces by various artist. For the pieces we purchased the price was an incredible steal. I'm currently on a Princess cruise and attended one of the art shows. I "won" an artwork, which I was told can be shipped to my home for $35, or I can have it framed and shipped for $299. I have to admit I was surprised. It made me wonder what "winning" really means if there are still required costs just to receive the prize. It would have felt much better if the artwork could simply be handed over onboard with a tube before disembarkation, or if shipping was included for winners. Instead, it ends up feeling like most options still involve extra charges after the fact. Just sharing my experience so others know what to expect before spending time at these events onboard. read more

You see, over the multiple years and multiple cruises that I have gone on, the art gallery was always something that I would maybe walk-through look left and right maybe see a couple famous artists that I would recognize from television and leave it at that. But I never thought in 1 million years, that walking through this gallery that night would change everything for me. First, I was greeted by someone in the management staff by the name of Asanda. We got to talk about how my favorite artist was Ramiro Brito since I grew up living in Miami and how my eye had been drawn to the multiple pieces that they had in the gallery from him and even up until that point, just having friendly conversation, in the back of my head I was just waiting for it...the hard sale. But to my surprise it never came. It just seems like a genuine conversation, between two people about an artist that they shared commonalities an interest with. She insisted that I come to an art auction that they were gonna be having later in the cruise. I hesitantly took the paper, thinking again that artwork at this level is not for people like me nonetheless I took the flyer and told her I would be there.(not even believing the words as they were coming out of my own mouth.) The next day I woke up and I looked at the schedule for the ship, and I saw that the art gallery was having a a seminar on Thomas Kincaid. The name didn't ring a bell, but I told myself that she was really friendly and that I was gonna be on this ship for 12 days so why not. I made my way to the gallery, sat down and met the auctioneer named Sal. We started looking at some of Thomas Kincaid's works that were displayed up on the wall and he went into explicit detail of a particular piece that really drew me in. He talked about the old cars, Normal Rockwell (whose name sounded familiar to me) and and how he was regularly featured in his works as well as Chuck Norris of all people. This particular painting also features Kinkaide in his own work, painting a Kinkaid, with the Kinkaid family outside of a Kinkaid studio. We then looked at another one with a Gazebo and stream that just struck my husband to which Sal then went into further narrative about that piece of work. Sale wasn't just telling a story, he was bringing this piece of art to life for us both. After that seminar and watching that slideshow about Thomas Kincaid, I can honestly say that I learned so much and saw how it tied into his artwork so many different ways that I fell in love. The way Sal just evoked emotion in me and brought it to life on the canvas just instantly changed everything for me. I WANTED MORE. I WANTED MORE KNOWLEDGE. I WANTED TO LEARN MORE ABOUT OTHERS...so I came again the next day. They were having a scavenger hunt and in this moment I had a chance to interact with the other staff there. (Sine, Shivam, Carmen, and Enoch.) It was such a sigh of relief to find out that it wasn't just a fluke finding someone so friendly and knowledgeable in Sal and Asanda, but with each and every one of them. Over the next 10 days on that cruise I can honestly say that I spend more time in that art gallery that I did in the buffet or even in my own bed. From from learning about The Devine Comedy series from Dali, to the Color palette of Peter Max and how significant of a role he played in the city I was born, New York, to Kre8 who I found out was half Puerto Rican just like me, to Jim Warrens ability to evoke so much emotion, to Godards sense of quirkiness, I just wanted more. This team jelled so well with each other and made me feel so much like family that on the last day, I purposely made my appointment after the auction to close out my invoice as the last one of the night. I personally wanted to thank one of them for changing my life forever. I'm not only found people who I could have the most intellectual conversation with about my newfound love of art, but to know that the same people were so genuine, showed so much love and compassion, and we're so accepting of me and my husband on our honeymoon made our honeymoon just that much more special. I don't think it's a far stretch to say that our honeymoon would not have nearly been the best vacation we would have ever gone on if it wasn't for this team. They made art accessible to me, they made art fun and they made me realize that art isn't just for a certain demographic of people that is for everybody to enjoy and I feel so blessed to have come across each and everyone of them because they all brought me and my husband, such a sense of joy over the 12 days that we spent on that cruise ship. So much so that I would want to plan my next cruise based off of what their schedule and contract is rather than what destinations I would want to go to because of the way that they made me feel less for what it is that they did for me. read more
